September 25. l985. the possiblity of Hurri- cane Gloria delivering her wrath to Massachusetts was being debated by meterologists throughout the New England area. She was still at sea and gaining in strength. Should she come ashore. substantial damage and hazardous conditions would result. News Bulletins were posted often and the atmosphere was one of growing concern. Thursday morning came and went with little increase in an expected course for Gloria. as did Thursday afternoon. It was not until the eve of September 26, that the dark clouds of realization began to hang over the heads of meterologists. Gloria would assume one of three courses. The third would leave Massachusetts in the center of her path. Hurricane warnings flashed across television screens and radio airways. Friday morning came in with the fog. warnings from the previous evening turned to declarations. Gloria, the architect of disaster. had begun her doom in the Boston area. Radio and television bulletins announced school closings. advised securing fly-away objects. saving water and enacting previously discussed precautionary measures. ln the early dawn hours of September 27. Governor Michael Dukakis declared a State of Emergency for Massachusetts. Emergency shelters were set up and coastline evacuations encouraged. Gloria came with forceful winds.ratn and some flooding. Many trees were sent to their death. murdered by her high winds. Waiting endlessly indoors for the oncoming gales and destruc- tion proved rather fruitless. lt seemed that Mother Nature and her wrath had tricked us again. Gloria was done and over with in a matter of hours. She took along time getting here. giving us a full two days with which to grow concerned. She did leave memories behing her, for some a tree. for some lack of elec- tricity, while others. well Iet's just say memories. These include a bill to reduce the sulfur emissions that pro- duce acid rain. a bill to find and clean hazardous waste dump sites, a bill to form a consumer utilities board to monitor rate hikes by the utility companies and a bill for mail-in voter reg- istration. MASSPIRG members have petitioned in the Com- mons at local supermarkets and at the Topsfield Fair. SSC also failed to defend its MASCAC title for the first time in I3 years as North Adams State became the conference's new kingpin. SSC's winning record U8-97 marked the pro- gram's 24th winning season in its quarter century of existence. This years recipient works behind the scenes with a great variety of students. She works in an advisory capcity to the largest student programming body on campus. the Program Council. She offers not only her advice, but also her time and genuine support. She works with over a dozen separate student coordinators, who are responsible for scheduling most of the programming on campus - ranging from Pub Nite and Senior Week to Arts Festival and Scarborough Fair and everything in between. To these programs, she brings her knowledge. dedication and compas- sion. She made it possible for Salem State College students to attend a NACA regional convention for the first time in years. The students who attended the convention brought back an increased knowledge of leadership and programming, which they passed on to the commu- nity.
