Some bees are scouts which fly for miles from the hive to seek out the best flowers and trees: they return to the hive and the polllnators and gatherers go to the flowers selected X by the scouts: they return to the hive to deposit their nectar which the workers and drones direct to specially crafted cells to T feed the growing lmago and pupae and the remainder of the 7253, community. Down through history the Bee has stood as a symbol for royalty, epitomizing industry and lofty ideas. The bee was the center of the Coat of Arms for the Barberlnl Famlly of 16th Century Italy, and as the family rose to the heights of the Itallan aristocracy, the simple bee became gilded and, during the relgn of Pope Urban Vll from the house of Barberini, these some gilded bees were intricatly carved and applied to the great doors of the Vatican Library. The bee and what it symbolizes appears in many other Coats of Arms, and during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, the industrious honey gatherers, encircled by a laurel wreath was synonymous with Napoleon and the Empire. And the sting . . . not only a painful prick, but some bee stings can actually prove fatal, not only to the bee, but to the victim. What passion and intensity must be aroused for the insect to be willing to die just to fend off an intruder. And so strong ls their desire to claim their territory, that masses of killer bees swarm northward from South America, driven on not only by the quest to expand what they deem is theirs, but by each other: led by themselves and each a leader, a massive communi- ty united by a common goal and task. Salem State once agaln has won the Howard C. Smith Cup, symbolic of overall athletic supremacy in the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference The Vlklngs' sports program dldn't produce as many champions as it did when it captured the Smith Cup a year ago, but its sixth consecutive Smith Cup and eighth In the 12-year history of the award was not without some celebrity. Although It won flve team titles this past college year, three short of its '83 total, It still wound up with his highest point total in leading the Smith Cup standing, garnering 50. The Vlklngs led the way in golf, women's tennis, field hockey, soccer and women's basketball and tied for first in ice hockey. Those six title claims were supported by second place finishes from men's tennis, volleyball, and baseball. And Salem's 50 points were unchallenged in the Smith Cup race. Runnerup Westfield had 26, Bridgewater 22, North Adams 18 and Worcester 13. P Q . c. ' ..' A 1--: Fciifigfhn.. ' Tsifffi ' .-1 3 lt shows Salem's supremacy, but both years I've been at the college the Smith Cup has been clinched even before our season has ended, Vikings' baseball coach Ken Perrone sold. So we haven't contributed that much. But I know the college president, Dr. Clamesh Amsler, and our athletic director, John Galaris, have strong feelings about the Smlth Cup, and it's a reflection of the hard work in all sports at the college. Maryellen McGee, the field hockey coach, said the Smith Cup is an annual goal at the college because of the tradition and pride it represents. .',: g. I6 f . -1:42 yer' 1 . Y. 515 I4 in -L. 2 at its T I J 173' We don't have a football team, or the tradition of some larger schools, but the Smith Cup gives us a sense of tradition, McGee said. Salem State ls known everywhere we go. I personally feel it's important for field hockey to uphold Its part in the Smith Cup. Early on l'll explain to the team what the Smith Cup Is all about, and what makes the competition for it so keen that our athletes are well acquainted with the other athletes from the state colleges. In a lot of cases they played against each other in high school, or were teammates. I think pride In a program is absolutely essential. I tell them it's an honor to play Salem State field hockey and a great honor to win the Smith Cup. Tim Shea, the women's basketball coach, said the Smith Cup is even valuable as a recruiting vehicle. As anything, the more you win it it seems to put more emphasis on winning it agaln, Shea said, I feel it's important to win the Smith Cup, especially at the Division 3 level where athletes play more than one sport. At this level, student- athletes are looking to be active in more than one sport, and when you can present another sport, and tell them, it's a solid, winning sport, then it can make a difference In a prospect's decision. In this respect. it does help in the overall recruiting. And I thlnk everybody at the college enjoys the Cup sitting in the trophy case. The fact we've won It so often is a big plus for Salem State. Abigail Mason, the gymnastics coach, said she knew Mr. Smith while attending Jacobs Pillow, the University of The Dance, in Lee. Thus, the Smith Cup is especial- ly meaningful to her. One of the dance students was a good friend of Mrs. Smith. He had a camp nearby and we'd visit. He was a great support of gymnasics, Mason said. Howard Smith has a strong feeling for athletics and good sportsmanship, and devoted a great deal of time to young people. I came to the college in 1966 to start gymnastics. Volleyball and field hockey were the only other competitive women's sports then. It s been great to see the women s programs grow and the women of Salem have done a fantastic job Mason said Salem has been one of the leaders in developing a quality athletic program ertalnly George Jacobson s golf teams have contributed to the Smith Cup ynasty 'N x J. ihgalf 1 -f? lif :?'
