To others it's a long hard journey that tests your strength and strong will. To those of you who have it easy don't totally relax. You haven't begun to live your life you need to know the facts. But these facts of life cannot be taught in a way that will succeed unless experience walks through your door All hearts must bend and bleed. Now experience is not a harsh thing that we should cringe or fear. It teaches us some valuable lessons it makes us wise and sincere. And when those rough times come along we all will get our share. lt's hard to look on the bright side when no one seems to care. But faith must reign your heart and soul for we're all here for a reason. Though times we need to be consoled we know we'll have our season. 'r 73, Xu SPORTS SGCCER The faces have changed, but the philosophy remains the same for Salem State soccer coach Nick Padovani. Bring in hordes of talented recruits to take care of the scoring, keep the defensive stability intact, and you'll produce consistent winners. At least that's the way things appear to be going after the opening day win over Kean College of New Jersey. The team seems to have changed few ingredients in the recipe for success that brought our booters a 17-2-1 record last year. The team's tri-captains, Joe O'Toole, Ted Przybylek and Aparicio Smart are the mainstays around which the defense is built this year. With some strong help from newcomer Tim McDermott, a Freshman stopper back, the defense held Kean to just four second half shots on net, while the offense broke a 0-0 halftime with two second half goals. We were tired in the second half and when their goalie made that stop it really took a lot out of us. , Kean coach Ochrimenko said. Salem is a strong, physical team. .Us l l,'e1 fu ' 1 ' -A 'XSL -I o X' ,-lk:-Q ., 1 ,.,',. Unbelievable, l never expected the offense to come together this well this quickly, she said after the Lady Vikings squashed U MainefPresque Isle, 6-0. The big hero or heroine, of the day was a fresh- man local Holly Brennan who starred at link for Salem High. McGee however saw her as more valuable on the forward line and moved her up to right wing. The move paid off in a big way. Holly's collegiate debut had become an auspi- cious one - four goals in her first game. So Brennan quickly became the player to watch on this team whose top players were supposed to be a solid core of returning defenders. Nesta Karner, a senior fullback, and Patty Burrows, a junior halfback, anchored the defense. Vickie Ware, senior goaltender, who like Karner and Burrows earned Mass. State College Athletic Conference All Star honors in the past, regis- tered her first shutout of the season and the 16th of her career. Senior forward Karen Dyke and sophmore forward Kim Patience who were fourth and fifth on the team in scoring last year are also expected to pick up where they left off in 1981. A pw 'bv' '3 .l Vg BQ. After captur- ing a record 10th MASCAC Title in the Fall of 1982, SSC embarked on one of its toughest Spring schedules ever. Compet- ing against the best golf schools from New England's three divi- sions, SSC fared well enough to be awarded yet another NCAA bid. Prior to the NCAA Championships, the Vikings recorded a first place finish at their own invitational tourney, a second at the Mass. Invitational, a fourth at the NEIGA and a sixth place showing at the Northeast Golf Classic. The team held sixth place at the nationals heading into the final round, but faltered and had to settle for a 12th place finish. Individual Honors: Junior captain John Hogan was selected to All-New England Honorable Mention Golf Team and sophomore Tom Dyer was named Team MVP. 9. From the original graduating class of ten majors in 1979, we have grown to over one hundred majors and the present graduating class of thirty-two. We are proud of the academic and artistic merit of these students many of whom are graduating with academic and creative honors in recognition of their achievements. In addition, this class includes the first majors graduating with concentrations in the new professional preparation of Graphic Design as well as the first three majors completing the program through continuing education. We in the department wish them all the best in their held of art and welcome them as active alumni of the Art Department and of Salem State College. I INA Y' I vw 1' . I ,gn .
