In appreciation of her contributions to education, the students of Salem State College respectfully dedicate this yearbook to Dr. Edna A. McGlynn. vi it f Nicholas Xanthaky For their many contributions to the students of Salem State and their many accomplishments within their field, the 1976 Yearbook Staff would like to pay tribute to Dr. Mary a Procopio and Nich- olas Xanthaky. They will be retiring in August 1976. . if . X-up X 4,2 ' - f. ' 1. Dr. Mary A. Procopio Memorial Frederic F. Janik July 18, 1945-August 24, 1975 Fred Janik came to Salem State in September of 1973 as an instructor in the Geography Dept. Ini- tially his appointment was to be for one year, but due to an extended leave of absence by another fac- ulty member Janik remainedf at Salem for two years. Janik was born and educated in the Boston area. He attended Boston College High, and Boston State College where he received a B.S. in Geography in 1968. His graduate work took him to U.C.L.A. where he received an M.A. in Geography in 1969. In 1971 Janik began work on a PH.D program at U.C.L.A. after serving two years in the military. His doctoral program was concentrated in Physical Geography and Fred had completed all the necessary coursework and was in the process of completing his dissertation at the time of his death. During his years at U.C.L.A. Janik studied under some of the more prominent Physical Geogra- phers in the country. His area of expertise was Physical Geography and his interest in our enviornment was without end. Fred Janik was a very dedicated and professional individual. His rapport with the students was ex- cellent and he always had time for the student who sought his help. His potential contribution to the advancement of the field will be greatly missed. Janik died while scuba diving in Boston Harbor with friends. fAugust 24, 1975l i l f , ,f 'r -4 Qi I Dr. Edward M. Penson President Dr. Adel Abu-Moustafa Acting Academic Dean Mr. William D. The purpose of the Task Force is to provide information about homosexuality with its many aspects to both the Gay members and to all interested heterosexuals. The aim of the program is to make Gay life more comfortable for Gays, and to educate heterosexuals in order that stereotypes and dis- crimination against Gays will eventually come to an end. The goal then, is to work toward the day when a group such as ours is no longer needed by either group. The manner by which the group seeks to reach the goal is by a series of lectures, films, a weekly column Written by us in The Log, and a Drop-in coffeehouse, which is presently meeting on Thursday nights from 7 to 10 P.M., in Scarborough Fair. Various programs are planned each semester according to the interests of the group or its needs. All events are open to the general college community. ,!l1't Society 'mpg' TWP f P I x tl' ,. A slow start and injuries In key players resulted in the team having a losing season. They started the season with two ties at the Gordon Invitational Tournament. They then beat Fitchburg State in overtime. The following week they defeated Worcester State and lost a close one to Framingham State. But as soon as the season rolled on, injuries resulted in losses. How- ever, they bravely displayed a lot of poise and pride when they played Merrimack, whipping them 4-2 in the Fiesta Mud Bowl. Maybe that win was a sign for what's to come in the future. Next vears team will be led by Co Captains Bob uirk and John Duffy The team will be losing three good players due to graduation they are Jeff Pash Kevin Keefe and Kenny Lineham The rest of the team will be returning under Coach Schneider and Asst Coach Whitehouse The outlook for next year is very promising with the continuing efforts of many key men awaiting action again next year Q... The years have seen the club grow in size and develope into one of the more succesfull Karate Clubs in this area. This team has competed in 7 tournaments and has done remarkably well in each and has more events than any other local col- lege clubs at the meets. This club practices the ancient Greek style of Classical Karate, which is taught by George Gonis of East Boston. The style tries to recapture the inspiration and values of the Greek Athletics and Scholars of Classical times. The union of athletic, intellectual and spiritual develope- ment in a harmonious manner, we believe, results in the wisdom and courage necessary to conduct a meaningfull life. A carefull examination of classical literature provides us with the tools necessary to accomplish this task. I-+1 In this style the student begins with the physical developement through the practice of basic self de- fense forms emphasing self control. In this way the student learns to use his body as an effective instru- ment in harmony with his mind and spirit. Upon reaching the Black Belt the student begins a study of the classics, with emphasis on Homer, Plato, and and Aristotle the Karate student thus becomes an athlete, scholar, teacher, thinker, and writer. Much is expected within the framework of human capabili- ties, and the key aspect is personal growth. The clubs instructor for the past years has been Anthony Schepici, a Third Degree Black Belt at the Gonis Academy. vs ww We The Great Race P554 if The purpose ofthe llmmx Fund Race was tvuo fold Flrst to demonstrate the ah1l1ty of our ata demlc commumty to ut1l1ze lts resources for the beneflt of the SOC16ty at large Also to hrlng facultx and admlnlstratxon members together on the fleld of competltlon for thelr own enjoyment and enrlchment The student body and departmental 0fflCG staffs responded enthuslastlcally by sponsorlng thelr favorlte entrant Salem St students always seem to rlse to the occaslon when help IS needed hx charltable groups The entrants were Presldent Edward Penson Dean of Students Dr Charles Welch Men s Athle tlC Dlrector W1ll1am GllllS Womens Athletlc Dlrector Nancy Cllfford Dlrector of Data Proc essmg Howard uoldsmlth and Professor of Blol ogy Dr Cla1rePame W1 W ,www :-ng 5 1 i Both Dr Penson and Dr Welch participated under unusual duress. Then man must listen, and turn an ear To nimble minds, that fear war with fear. We are deeply afraid, weary of halberd, pike and gun, Of fire, and stinking death blotting out the sung Keep eyes straight ahead. For good judgment equals reason, Stand tall, shoulders unbent, have courage to face the season. One iota of idiocy, it's not what we need For peace to rupture into Satan's misdeedsg Should man's unwilling ears totally reject amity, Misjudge, fumble and bungle, drown the world in belligerency. This sho Sing a psalm to David! Let's live and sing, not cry rt life away. Years are only moments that quickly die. For we hate with hate, barely give love and dignity To people oppressed, when man should show humility. One iota of sense we need, to live beyond despair, Do not retreat but look forward, backward and repair Man's true worth lost through the years. Pray and burn incense 274 To the might Adonoy. I XXX iii il 'N al' i .Cx-0' I Q Q Art by MARY ANN SCOLA Bowditch Dormitory-Nathaniel Bowditch Nathaniel Bowditch, mathematician and astronomer, was born on March 26, 1773, in Salem, Massa- chusetts. He received no formal education after the age of ten, but continued to read and study on his own, compiling an almanac at age fifteen. Between 1795 and 1803 he turned his interest towards the sea, embarking on several voyages. In 1799, Bowditch published the first American edition of J.H. Moore's Practical Navigator, correcting a great amount of errors found in the original text, and incor- porating his own findings. Further work and revision led to the publication under his own name of the New American Practical Navigator, 1802, which has been known through the years as the seaman's bible. For the rest of his life, Bowditch became an officer with insurance companies in Salem and Boston. He also continued to be interested in scientific subjects, and published numerous papers on comets and meteors. For several years he was engaged in translating the first four volumes of Laplace's Mecanique Celeste, published 1829-1839 as Celestial Mechanics, which included extensive commentary and updating by Bowditch, and it was a landmark in the development of American science. Although he declined several professorships, Bowditch was president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1829 until his death. Bowditch died in Boston on March 16, 1838. As long as ships shall sail, the needle point to the north, and the stars go through their wanted courses in the heavens, the name of Dr. Bowditch will be revered. Extract from a resolution in the Salem Marine Society following the death of Bowditch. Peabody Hall--The Peabody Sisters Peabody Hall bears the name of the three sisters of the influential Peabody family. They are Elizabeth Palmer 118041, Mary Tyler 118061, and Sophia Amelia 118095. Their contribution to society was improving education for women. Elizabeth excelled in her Greek studies at an early age, and later published Grecian Theology and Mythology. Sophia's skills were in art, Latin, and French. Elizabeth and Mary opened a school for girls in Brookline, which later folded due to poor business management. Later, they opened another school in a former Boston Boarding House. Elizabeth hired three art teachers, Frances Graeter, Thomas Doughty, and Chester Harding. They previously had earned 824.00 an hour, but they agreed to work for nothing. It was here that Mary met Horace Mann, who also was devoted to the improvement of education. They were married shortly after he obtained the position as Secretary of Education in 1843. Sophia had wanted to teach, but she was unable to work at the schoolabecause of poor health. After Sophia's recovery, she met and married Nathaniel Hawthorne. Sullivan Building--Dr. Edward A. Sullivan Dr. Edward A. Sullivan, President Emeritus of Salem State College, was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, October 16, 1893. He attended Boston College High School, and received Bachelor's and Master's degrees, as well as an honorary doctorate from Boston College. V f Dr. Sullivan served several years on the teaching and administration staffs of the Cambridge School System before his appointment by the then Governor Charles F. Hurley to the presidency of the State Teacher's Col- lege at Salem in 1937. President Sullivan was a scholar, great lecturer, and excellent administrator. He made outstanding fhcilltjy appointments, and before his voluntary retirement on December '31, 1953, was successful in olrtaining the long awaited, much needed Administration Wing. During his regime, the College firstgreceived accreditation federal and state educational organizations. V rr After the death of his first wife,,the former Gertrude Mackin, as Salem Sullivan married Margaret King, a member of Sa1em's Physical.?Education performed by his good friend, Cardinal Cushing. ' X 1 ifiaiss Mary M. O'Keefe SQ Horace Mann Laboratory School-Horace Mann One building on campus is called the Horace Mann Laboratory School. It was named after a well- known educator, Horace Mann. He spent his entire life trying to make education easier for everyone to get. When Mr. Mann was growing up, he had to fight for every little bit of education he received. So he set his sights on trying to establish an educational system that would reach everyone. It was a long and hard process, and many failures came before success. But the system he began is primarily what we have today. Horace Mann first realized that what was needed foremost were trained teachers. He then established what was known as normal schools to train these teachers. Most trainees were women, which not long before was unthought of. Mr. Mann himself believed women and girls should be educated just as well as men. These normal schools were very successful in turning out teachers, and education everywhere began to flourish. People came from all over to see Horace Mann's ideas and to follow his techniques. Salem State College was at one time called a Normal School. Horace Mann Laboratory School is named after Horace Mann because of his great work in setting up the Normal Schools for those interested in teaching. Today, many of us in education do part of our training at the Lab. School. Horace Mann was a great educator, and his contribution will never be forgotten. r i-I I , X, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Edward J.
