Your days at Salem encompassed the Kennedy years in our national history, years which placed great emphasis on youth and the heroic way-youth meets its challenges. I would like to include in my message to you a quotation from President Kennedy describing the call to all young Americans-especially those who have had the great opportunity of a College education. HI tell you the new frontier is here-whether we seek it or not. Beyond that frontier are unchartered areas of science and space, un- solved problems of peace and warg unconquered pockets of ignorance and pre- judice, and unanswered questions of poverty and surplus. I believe the times demand invention, innovation, imagination and decision. I am asking you to be new pioneers on that new frontier. My call is to the young in heart, regardless of age, to the stout in spirit-regardless of party. To all who respond to the mutual call-be strong and of good courage: be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed. I ask you to think well about the words of the late President. I ask you: What gives man dignity instead of shame in his struggle with adversity? Where does he get his courage and strength to try again after failure? Whence comes the desire to help one's fellow man instead of striding over him, to put service to others above selfifhe moral and spiritual values which are acquired during a man's education provide the source for this betterment of mankind. May you move forward in your chosen profession with courage, faith, and gratitude: courage and faith in yourselves, gratitude for all who have helped you in your desire to receive an education. In behalf of the college and staff, may I wish for you health, success, and happiness in the days to come. Sincerely yours, wzfbfaf ' FREDERICK A. MEI ER President I 17
