MESSAGE TO THE SENIORS JUNE., 1964 In preparing to write this message to the class of 1964 I reviewed in my memory your four years at Salem. I remembered the many activities of your undergraduate days and re- joiced for you in your development as a class at Salem State College. It is inspiring to watch the development of individuals in the quest of learning. I could not help being saddened by the national loss which will forever be an event of sad memory in your senior year -- the loss of IVIassachusetts'great son,President John F. Kennedy The tragedy that took place in Dallas, Texas, November ZZ, 1963, struck Salem with unusual sadness. Many of the faculty of the College today recall the young Senator who moved with charm and grace among our students and faculty in the fall of 1955. He gave generously of his time, his wisdom, and his humor to the students of that year. The State College at Salem 'is truly a better place because of .Tohn F. Kennedy's visit with us. The words with which our young President took office will be forever watchwords for young Americans embarking on a career in public life. Let the word go forth from this time and place to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Amer- icans, born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage. Young men and women in the class of 1964 may well read a heroic lesson in the words of the fallen leader of all the free world. His wisdom, courage, moral fiber, and devotion to duty will stand for all time as a beacon to guide young people in facing a position of public trust. It is your Alma Mater's hope that your lessons in the liberal disciplines will give to you the inner strength to meet the challenge of a demanding society. May you always remember your Alma Mater as a beloved place, a source of learning, strength and good works, In behalf of faculty and staff may I wish for you both success and joy in all you do. Sincerely yours, President
