We admire your courage. We admire your faith in yourselves and the strength you will give to public education. Members of the Class of 1963, you are the product of a system of education and government which draws a sharp line between the oppor- tunities ani responsibilities of the individual. Our society has depended upon its members as individuals for achievement of mind and spirit that have made our system great. The continued success of our society will depend more than ever before upon the individual. Nothing that is vital may depend upon the crowd. It is always the individual - the teacher, the scholar, the poet, the scientist, the artist, the engineer - who stands near what is great and good and transmits it to his fellow man. Let not your aims or standards drop to mediocrity or to uniformity, lest you cut yourselves off from creativity and a better standard of per- formance. There is no such thing as general ability. It is only the ability of the individual that counts. There is no such thing as moral and spiritual values of the crowd. There are only the moral and spiritual values found in individuals. Thomas Jefferson perceived the value of the work and worth of the individual when he wrote, It is the manners and spirit of the people which preserve a republic with vigor. And so it is with you. It will be the manners and spirit of the members of the Class of 1963 which will help to preserve and advance the quality of public education in the years to come. In behalf of the faculty and the staff, may I wish you success and happiness in the challenges of education which are yours. Sincerely yours, Pre'sidr'fzt
