A' 5 STATE COLLEGE AT SALEM In writing a message to the Class of 1962, I should like to stress the important place each of you will hold as a teacher in our society. A little learning is a dan- gerous thingg drink deep or taste not the Pierian Spring. I take my thoughts in writ- ing to you from the familiar words of Alexander Pope, As you know, the Pierian Spring was the spring in North Thessaly from which the Muses drank and so refreshed the wisdoms and skills in the arts and sciences with which they inspired the human race. Graduation with the degree in education which you will receive marks neither a separation from college nor from learning. Today, as never before, great demands are being placed upon the teacher, for the classified body of knowledge is becoming greater and greater. There is a dearth of elementary and secondary teachers in the fields of the arts and sciences. To be equal to the task of teaching young Americans in the late twentieth century, a teacher must continually study while he is teaching. The four-year program in teacher education is only the beginning. I would urge each of you to continue your study in the area of arts, sciences, and the languages. If you continually deepen your knowledge, you will awaken in your pupils intellec- tual curiosity. An unique reward will come to you when you see a young mind seeking to satisfy its intellectual curiosity, for you will know that without the effort to share your knowledge the pupil would not be able to deepen his. It is a truism that the teacher affects eternityg he can never tell where his influence stops. Your long and continuous preparation will benefit in unmeasured ways the young minds you influence.
