3 Ae resiolen f 'S essage It is a pleasure for me to write a few words to you on the occasion of your graduation from Salem State College. May I take this oppor- tunity to congratulate Miss Gertrude Burnham, Clipper Adviser, and all the members of the Class of 1961 who have worked so diligently and so well to produce this timely publication. The Clipper makes available to the college the true, vital, and historical account of your four years of activity at Salem. During your brief stay at the college you have seen many changes in the curriculum, in the staff, and in the physical plant. Your Alma Mater has grown during your college lifetime and hopes to grow in service, scope, and excellence in the years ahead. While these changes and advances have been great on the physical front, all will have been lost if even greater and more profound changes and advances have not been made on the intellectual front. The capacity for self education is the quality which we hope has developed in each of you. The Ameri- can education system needs this qualityq young teachers new to the profession INLISE contribute it if the system is to progress. The aim of education at Salem has been not only to fill minds with quantitative knowledge, and to communicate vocational skills, but also to awaken an appreciation and develop an understanding of both the sciences and the humanities in an harmonious growth of all the higher faculties of man-the faculties of imagination, intellect, will, and, above all, the capacity for self education. The college is proud of you and we know that you will continue to help the college in its program for a greater Salem State College in its pursuit of greater excellence. May I extend to each of you a personal invitation to return to the college often and to become active in the Salem State College Alumni. Sincerely yours, 4 K
