President ls' Message It is a pleasure for me to write a message for the 1959 Clipper. Your class is unique in the history of the college, for it is in your gradu- ation year that the second era of expansion takes place. The first expan- sion was in 1896 when the college moved from Broad and Summer Streets to the present site. I trust that you will ever bear in mind that it is not a shiny exterior or new buildings that insure the worth of any institution of learning. The value of the college is insured by the loyalty and sincerity of its sons and daughters. According to Aristotle, the prime object of education is the good life. A good life is one filled with good actions. This theory finds ex- pression in the Massachusetts Constitution: It shall be the duty of legislatures and magistrates in all future periods of the Commonwealth to cherish the interests of literature and the sciences and all seminaries of them, especially the University at Cambridge, public schools and the grammar schools in the towns, to encourage private societies and public institutions of education. The great satisfaction of giving to others the view of Man,s know- ledge is to be yours. The key to the future of education lies in the performance of teachers. It is not in buildings, in equipment, or in salary schedules but in the character and teaching performance of its students that education will hold its place in America's future. It is for you and from you that we have great expectations. In behalf of the college staff, may I wish for each of you all the good things that will come to you from your profession. Sincerely yours,
