Message for the Clipper lylfxitc ii 21, 1957 XVhen l address you as the Senior Class in a graduation message, I feel that I have an unusual opportunity to ask you to think with me concerning some of the philosophy that should guide you in your work as a scholar and as a teacher. Your purpose is expressed in the choice you have made to become a teacher- to dedicate yourself to handing on to young Americans true appreciation of our cultural heritage. The teacher in America fills a place in society delineated by the very fundamental concepts of the democratic form of government. The founding fathers intended that society should prepare thc growing generation for the responsibilities of self-government. The important task of preparing the people for their place in society has been given, in part at least, to the teachers of the public schools. It is the hope of those who have taught you that you will spread the love of learning and cultivate intellectual discipline in the pupils you teach. We also hope that at the same time your influence will reflect character, judg- ment, and moral responsibility. Thomas Jefferson called education the most legitimate engine of governmentf' In speaking of democratic government he said, If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects to be what never was and never will be. Thus we see that from the beginning the status of the American public school teacher has been one of great responsibility to his fellow men. The teacher HILISE have not only intellectual competence but also character, judgment, and moral fibre. Now that you are receiving the bachelor's degree in education and know what your purpose is in life, I say to you, Go forth and gladly teachf, Enjoy the opportunity of inculcating the fundamentals of learning in the minds of future Americans, and at the same time, inspire them to meet their responsibilities and appreciate their freedoms. May I extend to each of you the best wishes of the faculty and staff for happiness and success. May you always keep in your hearts a love of teaching and a quest for truth. Presidezzf
