The Presiden t's Message Speak the speech. l pray you, as l pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue: but if you mouth it, as many of your players do, I had as lief the town crier spoke niy linesf, Hamlet. Act Ill, Scene II ln writing a message to the senior class, I would like to take part in the theme of your CLIPPFR and ask you to reflect upon the thought in the familiar quotation from Hamlet as it applies to you at this hour. My purpose in suggesting that you speak the speech forthrightly is to urge each of you to live up professionally to the ideals of teaching which have been set before you during the last four years. You are asked to assume great responsibility as you become teachers. Your fellow citizens look to you in hope and trust, assuming that through your training you are now ready to help in handing down our cultural heritage and cultivating intellectual discipline in the minds of children. You know that your college training plus life-long study will be the means of your knowing how to speak the speech. Give to your pupils the best scholarship of which you are capable: aim to help inculcate clarity and accuracy of thought in the minds of those under your direction. You will be able to develop the capacity for reflective thought in your pupils only to the extent that you yourselves continue to study and deepen your own knowledge. Therefore, as you speak the speechm, continue your study in his- tory, art, science, mathematics, or the languages. Let the depth of scholarship in your subject-matter field be a source of inspiration to the children who sit before you. You are now prepared not to mouth your words but to speak them Utrippingly on the tongue in the art of educationg the challenge is yours. May I extend the best wishes of the faculty and staff for happiness and success in your chosen held. May you always keep in your minds and hearts a love for your college and an understanding of the trust the college places in each of you. Affdwyf
