HCDNGRING DR. FREDERICK A. MEIER Our President Who Came to Us in SaIem's Centennial Year A Happy Augury for the Future

Page 12 text:

The Presidents Message I am very happy to have this opportunity to write a message to the Class of 199 9. As one who has a genuine interest in your future, I hope that as teachers you will become active members of the profession. I trust you will be active members of the Salem alumni and will hold always your interest in Alma Mater. You must realize the important place you now hold in our society. You will be expected to help mold the character of the boys and girls whom you teach. In the daily routine of the classroom you will have the opportunity to give every child whom you teach, the moral and spiritual values which will help him most -- the development of traits of loyalty, respect and honesty. Every child must be helped to love and respect his school and the American democratic process. As teachers you must remember that you are members of a noble profession. Other professions are based on teaching: it is only the unthinking who do not realize the true value of teaching. From the classrooms of America every year emerge the youth upon whom the future of America is dependent. You are going forth into the educa- tional world when the public is appraising its schools. It is your duty to keep the parents and patrons of the public schools informed and interested. NVithout exception, the real issue of our educational system is the well-being of youth. You as teachers must ever be concerned with this fundamental issue. Our country as never before is in need of teachers who are expertly trained - teachers who are concerned with the welfare of our youth, and teachers who place high on the scale of values the moral and spiritual concepts so necessary in our great republic. Nlav l talse this opportunity to wish each of you happiness and success in your chosen field. If there is any way in which I or mem- hers ol our stall can be of service to you, please come to us at your college. MQW! Q7?am'
