I believe that every man is inherently religious, and that, therefore, something in him responds to supernatural allusions. However depraved he may become, the instinct to acknowl- edge the dominion of a Creator is a motivating factor in his life. There are exceptions, of course, like Ingersoll and Shaw and Stalin, but I sometimes wonder about them, I wonder if their materialistic mouthings were nothing more than abortive attempts to stifle the ululations of a tortured conscience.
