President's Message To give a message to the Class of 1954 is a great pleasure and a happy opportunity for me. I extend my best wishes to you on your selection of teaching as a life work. You are entering teaching at a time when the opportunities for properly-trained young men and women are boundless. Often it is pointed out that there are no new frontiers- that the frontiers of the old West are no more, that the frontiers of industry in many phases have vanished. Yet the analysis of present day prob- lems in education reveals frontiers in the guidance and development of youth more challenging than any in our history. The challenge was great to the men who heeded and followed Horace Mann more than a century ago. The opportunities lying before the Class of 1954 are equally great, and it is my sincere hope that in using your education you will seize each opportunity to serve with courage and wisdom in the development of the citizens of tomorrow. I am sure that the faculty joins me in wishing you success. We do not look upon your physical separation from us by graduation as a loss. Each of you is a vital unit of the active protoplasm of our collegeg each of you will carry on for Alma Mater as you solve the problems of education in your respective positions. We hope you will return often to Alma Mater to drink of the spring of inspiration and vitality. It is my sincere hope that as we meet with each other in the future, we may together plan an even greater Salem Teachers College. For each of you I wish happy, rewarding years in the inspirational work of teaching.
