I i Presidents Message I like to think that Vaya con Dios became a popular song not only because of the poignant melody to which the lyric was written, but also becauseiof the significance of the title whose translation, as you know, is Go with God. I believe that every man is inherently religious, and that, therefore, something in him responds to supernatural allusions. However depraved he may become, the instinct to acknowl- edge the dominion of a Creator is a motivating factor in his life. There are exceptions, of course, like Ingersoll and Shaw and Stalin, but I sometimes wonder about them, I wonder if their materialistic mouthings were nothing more than abortive attempts to stifle the ululations of a tortured conscience. There are many equally impressive valedictories in other languages. Not the least striking is our own Goodbye, which is a contraction of God be with ye. In this short message I am trying to say farewell, but I want to express more than is contained in such phrases as Au Revoir or Auf Wiedersehen.,' I want to wish you the kind of success which comes with peace of mind, peace of soul. Whatever the cynic may declare to the contrary, this is best assured when God is with you. The profession which I have left and which you are about to enter has charted the course of civilization since the beginning of time. As you are conscious of the achievements of your predecessors, so should you be mindful of the Source of your strength. I interpret the word in the same sense of its derivation as I bid you Goodbyef' QLPWKM aaa..
