The same idea has been portrayed again and again in literature through such allegories as Canterbury Tales and The Odyssey, both of which have served as themes for The Clipper in former years. It is encouraging that our seniors select these themes, because their choice is indicative of sound thinking and healthy behavior at .1 time when morality is an outmoded product in so many centers of population. We are frequently told that this is the heyday of civilization. Perhaps that is an appropriate characterization of the twentieth century. Man has done remarkably well. Against the forces of nature, against the barriers of time and space, against barbarism and retrogression, he has made of the earth a splendid thing, a crowning monument to his industry. Despite the calamities of the past few years, despite the turmoil and turbulence through which we are now passing, man may look upon his achievements with pardonable satisfaction, and as he views the spoils of conquest, as he numbers the difficulties surmounted and the obstacles overcome, as he contemplates the accomplishments of hand and heart and brain which reach from one end of the earth to the other, he may say truthfully and triumphantly, I have done well. Yet in the very utterance of that boast, there are so many facts which rise up to confound him. After all, it is not so much what man has done that counts as what he has not done but might have done. We cannot attain perfection this side of eternity, but should we not be much closer to it after so many generations than we are today? The difficulty, as I see it, is that there are too many people who have neglected the vital imports of life, who have made them subservient to the lesser, the ephemeral things, too many people who have developed themselves along certain commendable lines, but who have failed, and failed miserably to stress the realities. One does not have to be of a particular religious belief to profess the truth that every man is on his way to eternity, that he is here on earth to make himself as fit as possible to deserve that state. Then, what does it matter though we conquer time and space, and transform wildernesses if in the end we must cover our faces with shame because of energies misdirected and talents misapplied. The things that count are the spiritual things, and toward their attainment all our efforts should first be directed. Afterwards, if you will, probe the stars, delve into the earth, hew the forests, span the waters, marshal the dreams of the imagination. There are too many people who are not made of that stuff, too many whose end in life is material greatness, natural prosperity, the acclaim of their fellow men. They strut and preen themselves before the footlights of the world, with never a thought of what is to happen when the show is over and the audience has gone. Religion to them is nothing more than an abstract of meaningless forms and ceremonials. They are educated to the belief that the temporal is the supreme verity. They see nothing beyond the horizon of death, or they blind themselves to that vision until it dwindles and fades. That is the philosophy of materialism to which so many subscribe. It is re- pugnant to all who, in Quest of the Grail, Live pure, speak true, right wrong, follow the King. 4. ivwn , 'R X , pnior 64156 CQMFUIAS w IN - :YN 10 w A fi Cys! u fl 'CD w C Q-Xl' 11 B . . Each flower was slid discreetly into place Wfith gentle touch, discrimination, grace, And such finesse, the huddled lilac blow Unveiled to share the radiance of the rose. Nor did the lily, in her stately pose, Outshine the black-eyed Susanis sunny glow. Thus We were gathered by the Unseen Force To face the budding future's cryptic course. Our strangeness worn, our mutual thirst revealed, The silent bond of loyalty was sealed To all who dweit within our new-found walls, To e-very voice that echoed in its halls. And now the quest-the quest of eager youthg Hunger of desert blossom for the rain When sun and sand have left it dry againg Thirsting, our fevered spirits sought the truth. We plunged into the never-ending sea And found our drouth,s insatiability. The flowers have lived their day, have spent their Beyond this hour, a hopeful future looms. With one triumphal burst of fulgency They shower delights and leave their memory, A fresh and happy, young and eager scent, Glad of the weathers they have come to know. So too, our days within these walls are spent- Today the hour for our triumphal glow. In the days when the world sought peace and unity, there came to Salem a band of strangers from far and wide, making their way through a scene of confusion. Although many in number and unused to the ways of one an- other, they found unity in the Round Table and in their emblem, the clipper ship, with its motto Pr0grea'i. The strangers had already made the acquaintance of many friendly knights and ladies, when they were confronted suddenly with a company the like of which had never before been seen. The Sophomores descended upon these Freshmen in the realm, subjecting them to countless tilts and jousts and humiliating them beyond measure. Only those strong of heart and sturdy of mind and body survived the ordeals in Town House Square and the realm. Many were heard to exclaim, Ask me not, for I may not speak of it. I saw it, and the tears were in my eyes. From these encounters, the Freshmen emerged victors in the field, lllil'lI!7flC' divfzz, and finally the trumpets sounded, proclaiming the truce. A banquet of state was hefd three weeks after their entrance into the realm, and rare entertainment was provided. The skit presented by the knights in Freshman III will be long remembered for its impersonations of the ladies in the court, with John Sullivan being awarded top honors for his performance. Great was the turmoil when the Freshmen campaigned for their officers. After much bargaining and many campaign promises, the positions were won by John Sullivan, president: Joe Sacco, first vice-president, Ed Burke. second vice-president, Joan Kinhan, secretaryg Ann Fletcher, treasurer. Changes were made among the faculty that would influence the Quest. Miss Beers and Mr. Hardy left on half-year sabbatical leaves, and Dr. Hall was added to the staff in the English department. In the training school, Mr. Moody, formerly principal, went to the college faculty as full-time director of training, and Mr. Rikola, formerly supervisor of the eighth grade, succeeded him as principal. Mr. Rich and Miss Hourihan were added to the faculty as supervisors of the eighth and fifth grades respectively. The Round Table assembled in the Great Hall many times to attend lec- tures presented during the year. The most unforgettable and enjoyable presen- tation was that by Mary Louise Hickey, whose reading of The Barrvffs of Wfimpole Street won the hearts of all. The tale of the oppressed American Indian as told by a member of that race was an unusually colorful perform- ance and was thoroughly enjoyed, for the court is always on the side of the oppressed. It was saddening to learn that he was not sincere, and that his tour was short-lived, for the authorities of a neighboring state forbade further appearances. Trumpets were heard sounding for a second time, heralding the Freshman Frolic, held in the spring in the Great Hall, and joy gladdened every heart. The theme of spring did indeed abide in the hearts of those present. George Bedrosian secured the orchestra and added to the enjoyment by playing one of the instruments. Outside the realm there was rejoicing when Freshman III served as host at many gatherings. Lasting friendships were made, and occasions of happy memory were deeply rooted in the minds of all. It was learned that the majority of its members were veterans of XWorld War II, a conflict that was thought to have been the war to end all wars. To all appearances, the world was settling down to peace, to progress in the means of preventing destruction. The Dramatic Club presented George lW:zsf1i11g1'o1z Slrpf Here with a cast that included Ed Burke, John Sullivan, and Bob Aldrich. These members of the Freshman Class displayed their talents as Thespians in a peaceful era. Days passed, and then one morning in May above the singing of the birds was heard the winding call of a bugle summoning the Court to exams, the testing ground for the strength and sincerity of each member of the Round Table. One week of exams determined the progress the Court had made during the year, and a few were singled out as those who fell , the majority however, were numbered as those who won. The sun shone on Class Day for Move-Up Exercises and the spirits of the Court were high. When the colors of the Freshmen were changed for those of the Sophomores, the climax of the first year in the realm was reached. Ahead were three years, during which the search would be continued. THE VALLEY OF DECISION But le! me fell flier llllllfbff fade The doors were thrown wide open in the fall when the Court reassembled at Salem. As Sophomores, our earnest band of adventurers was smaller in number, but it was far greater in spirit. The future was becoming as im- portant as the present, as the fast-moving days sped them on in the Quest. With forethought, officers were elected to lead the search during the Sophomore Year: Lenny Desmond, president, Shirley Foley, vice-president, Pat Fallon, secretary, Claire Kuninski, treasurer. As King Arthur and the Round Table sorrowed for the loss of one of its members, so did Salem experience deep sorrow upon the death of its beloved Miss Bunton. Dr. Hennessey was appointed to fill Miss Bunton's position in the history department, and Mr. Clifford filled the vacancy in the music department caused by the retirement of Mr. Woods. All this While, the Freshmen were becoming further oriented to the ways of the Round Table. It fell to the Sophomores to test the endurance of that incoming band of strangers, as theirs had been tested in the preceding year. All was in the spirit of fun, although the Freshmen did not appreciate that Reign yen a I v. , L Z6 And ever and anon a knight would pass Outward, or inward to the halln 'So sang the Knighthood I know the Table Round fact at the time. Varied opinions were expressed regarding the length of initi- ation, opinions that were to effect changes in the program in succeeding years. When the feast was ended and thoughts of the banquet were far behind. the Round Table settled down to the work at hand. The instruction was directed toward the arts in which every seeker should be proficient. The one art that would have aided matters greatly at this time, the art of peaceful living, was lacking. In November, reconstruction activities were begun on the building, and each student was left to exercise his ingenuity to surmount this obstacle. The competition grew too keen between instructor and con- structor, resulting in unscheduled study hours. Dr. jones conceded defeat to the workers engaged in building a fire exit from her room. The Great Hall became as the forest where the shadows fall cold at midday, as the wind blew in one wall and out the other. The recreation room was also undergoing a transformation. Most wel- come was the ping-pong table at which Mary Boylan and Joyce Rothwell be- came champions in their own right. The relay ping-pong mitches will be remembered as a sight never eyes again on earth shall see. For further recreation, the Swimming Club was organized by Pat Kelley, who was suc- cessful in obtaining the Lynn Boys' Club as the meeting place. In great num- bers. the Round Table invaded the city of Lynn. In the midst of the Court, concern arose regarding the Chadwick Bill which threatened to divide the Round Table. The bill aimed at forming junior colleges from the teachers colleges, centralizing the work of the last two years at the University of Massachusetts. During an activity period the matter was debated, and opinion favored the defeat of the bill. To the relief of the Round Table, the Legislature did defeat the bill, leaving the realm intact. A true knight embodied all that was good and sincere. I-Ie knew how to fight and how to make merry. Certainly the members of the Court at Salem knew how to enjoy themselves. During the second semester the class presented its masterpiece, Half-Cezzfzlry Review, under the direction of Phil Russo. The Round Table was carried back to the days of the Charleston and Sophie Tucker, when diamonds were a girl's best friend. The Sopho- more Dance also proved to be a social and financial success. Some members of the Court travelled far from the realm in search of adventure. Joan Kinhan appeared on Ted Mack's television broadcast in New York, singing Johnny One Note. I-Ier accomplishments were well known by her fellow members of the Table Round, and it was gratifying to have them known abroad. Evanet instructed Percival in the ways of becoming a true and worthy knight. One bit of sound advice that he gave was: remember that to face death bravely is the hero's glory, and bravely were exams faced by members of the Court, although a voice inside awoke and cried, 'this quest is not for theef U Instructions given by the leaders had been heeded, the training was suffi- cient. As their journey passed its half-way mark, the increasing importance of the adventure was felt by all who had undertaken it. They realized that their deeds and trials would have an influence reaching far beyond the present. Once they had come to this realization, their thirst for knowledge became more intense. Before the Elementary and Junior High Juniors began the adventure in the Forest Perilous Qwherein was situated the Horace Mann Training Schoolj the way was being prepared by the leaders, among Whom losses had been re- paired and additions had been made. Miss Mary Mrose succeeded Miss Amy Ware in the geography department, and Miss janet Smith, formerly registrar, returned as a member of the business education department. Mrs. Holly re- placed Miss Lucy Bell temporarily as librarian, during the latter's illness. The library did not seem like the same place without Miss Bell. Miss Keily of the business education department and Mr. James Sullivan of the science depart- ment went on half-year sabbaticals. New officers of the class were: Shirley Foley, president, Claire Kuninski, vice-presidentg Jean Brennan, secretary, Roland Dwinell, treasurer. All served their fellows well, and under their leadership such activities as the cake sale and turkey raffle swelled the treasury by an unexpectedly large amount. To further the efforts of the Round Table group and to increase their prestige, President Sullivan had long sought accreditation. During this, the Junior year, the whole company flashed as a yellow gleam across the realm in preparation for the visit of a committee of accreditation. The floor of the gym was attended to by the Junior High Juniors, the Elementary Juniors concentrated upon the reception room, and the Commercial juniors advanced upon the Great Hall. The committee was favorably impressed by the college atmosphere, and Salem received its accreditation shortly after the visit. Great was the rejoicing among the members of the Round Table as they assembled for the great Accreditation Banquet, which had a record-breaking attendance, a tribute to President Sullivan's long and arduous efforts in behalf of the realm, and an expression of the spirit of loyalty which marks those who enter upon the Quest. A mahogany desk was given to President Sullivan as a slight token of appreciation for his unselfish endeavors. The new tennis courts, a reality after years of expectation, were the scene of prodigious feats performed by Commercial teams, representing the juniors. It was good to have sports in the field again, after the long winter. if 14- ,.-. v -if fl'-4 .A , -c A.,-1 1 'V rf. J, ? M4 av., N 1. Capacity audiences applauded vigor- ously. Meanwhile, outside forces were threatening inner peace. The conflict in Korea was rousing many nations from their apathy, uniting them in a common cause against unprovoked aggression. Many among us recalled the latest war onlv too well and viewed the new struggle with foreboding. Everyone hoped that those who had been tested could finish their studies before being recalled. Gloom without and gloom within also, for midyears were approaching: however, like the ogres and monsters of knightly adventures, once viewed and faced bravely, they were less fearsome. More terrifying and of greater import was the greatest adventure of the Quest, the training period for the Elemen- tary and Junior High Juniors. As the mists had hung over the Forest Perilous, so did a cloud overshadow the path that led to the training school. A new program had been put into effect, whereby vacation must be sacrificed for the Quest in some cases, while in others the Quest was temporarily forsaken for vacation. On a fair evening in April, the Juniors journeyed to Boston to the Copley- Plaza, now the Sheraton-Plaza, for the most important and beautiful dance of all, the Junior Prom. The dance was successful far beyond expectation, and the music furnished by Marchand's orchestra was greatly enjoyed. Norman Acheson received congratulations as the first member of the class to marry. Terry Flanagan became engaged while practice teaching. Kappa Delta Phi received official sanction, and Sheldon Greenglass was elected first president under the new status. Many social evenings were spon- sored by the fraternity, and many friendships were cemented. On a fair morning in June when the rhododendrons were in bloom, a splendid company, wearing capes of various hues prepared to take their parts in the pageantry of Move-Up Exercises on Class Day. The display was more effective than ever before, and the exercises, which had been initiated by Mrs. King had become traditional and were dear to her and to the Round Table. There was an added touch of poignancy, for this was Mrs. King's last active participation in the program, as she was to marry President Sullivan in June. The physical education department was to lose a popular member, but the college was to gain a gracious First Lady. The Juniors were to play a part in other Commencement exercises. Chosen to carry the Daisy Chain were: Shirley Foley, marshal, Dorothy Araujo, ,Ioan Kinhan, Barbara Collins, Claire Kuninski, Jean Brennan, Joan McCarron, Ramona Lazar, Patricia Anthony, Ann Fletcher, Patricia Cronin, Gladys Hill, Elaine Senftleben. The Laurel Chain which escorted the ivy orator consisted of: Claire Walsh, Dorothy Swanson, Patricia Kelley, Arline Berrigan, Ann McLean, Mary Murphy, Patricia Auger, Zoe Matthew, Helen Gannon, Greta Anderson, joan Webster, and Thespina Triantafilou. THE LAST STAGE OF THE QUEST And I rode' 011 ann' fauna' cl migbfj' bill. The Forest Perilous had been traversed, before the travellers arose a steep ascent yet to be climbed, the final testing of stamina and determination. After three years, the importance of the Quest was deepened and enhanced by the knowledge that not all would reach the summit. The officers who were to lead the group on this last dangerous stage of the journey were: Ann Fletcher, president, Edward Burke, vice-president, Claire Walsh, secretary, Mary Murphy, treasurer. Their duties were not light, but each officer accepted responsibility and worked conscientiously and un- flaggingly to the end that this should be a successful year for the class. The Court was scattered during the greater part of the time, and it was not until March that the four divisions were gathered together once more. During the first and second quarters, the Elementary and Junior High Seniors completed their second and last training period. The class was united each Wednesday during activity period, and plans went forward for Commence- ment. Many discussions arose over the question of having a senior social. In January, the Commercials were scattered to the four corners of the Commonwealth for their practice teaching. Behind them lay the ordeal of giving chapel talks, an ordeal than was yet to be faced by the Elementaries and Junior Highs. Bob Cafarelli appeared to be the one most deeply affected, for he was carried out on a stretcher borne by solicitous comrades. In the days of King Arthur the knights were often plagued with grief, similarly stricken were the Seniors by the new attendance regulations. One dark day Miss Wallace announced that a new system had been inaugurated, whereby absences were limited to a definite percentage for each course, and to exceed this percentage would involve serious consequences. The pressure was felt by many, as the year advanced. The smoker was magically transformed as there appeared on its drab walls scenes of historic significance. The clipper ship limned by Harry Hewitt, Derby Wharf, the House of Seven Gables, and a portrait of Samuel Bowditch lent interest and color to the room. In the outside World, forces were at work that threatened the future of the knights. The police action in Korea had engaged nations in conflict and many Seniors faced postponement of earning their degrees, fortunately, how- over, they were able to complete their courses. Among those who joined the ranks of the engaged were: Greta Anderson and Art Barresi, Lora Blodgett, Joanne Cahill, Leona Freedman, Norma Hanley, Jeannette Landry, Althea Matthew, Mary Nolan, Elaine Senftleben, and Loraine Terban. Those who had married were: Helen fWrightj Bowser, Lee ffhompsonj Carlson, Gloria CStaplesj Peterson, Phyllis QBlackallj Szidat, C L I P P E R .. l a'W7.T ' . 4'- xt -Y ---- ,,,.-- t .Q-,I V 4g, 4pau-venus--Q W ' i ,. 1. ,Q -I- f wx if 1 .1 ,U ff ' p,,'.ff'v !.QZ5-. Two classmates, Joan Kinhan and Lenny Desmond, were married in April. While the winter hung heavy and the days passed slowly, there came a day never to be forgotten, a once-in-a-lifetime morning. Because of a heavy snowstorm, few faculty members and fewer students were able to reach the college, and classes were suspended. The radio announcer in Salem advised the use of dog sleds for those seekers offer knowledge who were bold enough to brave che elements. The CLIPPER Staff began its task of editing the annual. The staff mem- bers were: Dot Araujo, editor-in-chief, Ed Burke and Joan McCarron, assis- tant editors, Ann Burnham and Al Wolfe, photography editors, Mary Murphy, business manager, George Bedrosian and Helen Gannon, advertising managers, Ramona Lazar, secretary, Claire Kuninski, Patricia Anthony, Marjorie Bassett, associate editors. In compliance with standards of accreditation, the faculty was increased to reduce the pupil-instructor ratio. Eight new instructors were added: Mr. Parker Dexter, business education, Mrs. Joseph A. Sullivan, a Salem alumnus, business education, Mr. Charles A. Kiefer, Jr., social studies, Miss Mary E. Casey, English, Dr. Frank J. Hilferty, biological science, Miss Helen T. Mackey, physical education, Miss Elsie M. McCabe, librarian, and Mr. J. Raymond Silva, mathematics. In February Mr. Healey, one of the custodians, retired from service. His cheerful greeting and willing cooperation have been missed. Harry was always willing to lend a helping hand as he went about his work from early morning until late afternoon. In March the Commercial Seniors returned, and spring returned also, bringing visiting superintendents, who offered positions to many. Salem will be well represented in Massachusetts cities and towns, and for the first time Newton accepted an inexperienced Senior, that honor going to Mary Murphy. New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Arizona, Ohio, Wisconsin, Cali- fornia, and Oregon will also have representatives of the class of 1952. Investiture came on May 8, and thereafter the traditional garb of the scholar was seen frequently on campus. The first occasion after Investiture on which the gown and mortar board were worn by the entire group was the dedication of the CLIPPER on May 15. Class Day, June 9, permitted no idle moments from Last Chapel at 9:30 through Move-Up Exercises, the Senior Luncheon, the Ivy Exercises, and the Tea. Weary but happy, the participants departed for their homes late in the afternoon, realizing suddenly and with sadness that the only other social oc- casion on which they would all gather would be the Senior Reception. Commencement activities reached their height on June 10. Those who had begun the Quest as neophytes four years earlier had passed through the Valley of Decision and the Forest Perilous, had climbed the steep ascent in the Last Stage of the Quest, and now stood on the summit, saying, Our fimr' is bard al' band, And hence we go. Peace on the Sea by Ann Floyd You ripple across the earth so lightly, just as a glider flies across the sky. Softly and rhythmically the seas sigh As the waves slowly break. How silently And lazily you flow. Now I can see The white sea gulls, as they are drawing nigh, To hover near the blue. Now I know why Men find peace here, for I have seen the sea Oh happy sea, who is always singing To me, a song of life and sweet delight. Oh joyful sea, who is ever dancing With ever-changing tides, a beacon light To some men you stand, always inviting Them to follow you, and follow the right. Korea by Paul Ionian Riley I had a brush with Death the other day on a hill that was hunched and broken, on a crag that was wet and cold and horribly obscene. He came, a putrid pastiche, like pieces pulled alive from the throbbing bowels of Life, winged toward me with an ugly grace and beckoned, But I said, N0 . With flesh a little cold, And heart a little fearful, I said, No, no, thank you, I yet have things to do - A life to live, and other deaths to die. Persistence by Elizalrefb Mulcahy The breakers sweeping sullenly Upon a lonesome strand, Thrashing, lifting, twisting To conquer the silent land. The beach received the angry sea, Tossed it and threw it back, Meeting the oncoming rushes, Turning the white waves black. Again and again persistently, It hurled itself to shore, Only to be cast violently Back to sea once more. Finally, the waves yielded- Wearisoine, repent, Not too angry to meet defeat, But beaten, subdued and spent. Ave Atque Vale by Paul Ionfarf Riley I have reached a goal in the waking of a full life. Thinking to honor me, they have asked me for words, but I find- To the Past, I need not speak, as it knows my gratitude for having immersed me so deeply in the bitter-sweet crucible of experience. To my Teachers, I have no words, but let my life tell them - unstintingly, you have made your knowledge my strength, your actions my inspirations, and your spirit an undying memory. To my Parents, I have nothing to say. Their life's work, which I am, can only be repaid by their life's desire, which I hope to be. To the Future, I cannot speak, for like the coming of a new day, it hangs suspended and untouchable so near as to be present, yet so distant it can be neither seen nor ' heard. Thus I leave with words unsaid, with a joy in my past, a confidence in my God, and a fervent trust in my future. r fg,v N-- -inn-',J -v, 'KM , -4- f 151221. ,' .
