This yearbook is the result of the efforts of The Forty-niners. Chro- nologically, that is an appropriate designation, since you and the California gold seekers are exactly a century apart. You resemble one another, too, in undertaking a common search for something precious, you for the realiza- tion of the satisfactions of your profession, they for deposits of that elusive metal which more than once has changed the course of history. XX'e should not press the comparison too far, because the original forty-niners were a heterogeneous group: scholars and roustabouts, criminals and clerks. mer- chants and adventurers. Among them were soldiers who had deserted their posts, sailors who had abandoned their ships, worshippers who had fled from their churches, officials who had forsaken their responsibilities. Yet, by and large, and in a more elemental fashion. I suppose they repre- sented. as you do, a fair cross-section of humanity. They had the same capacities for good and evil, the same incentives to spiritual enrichment. the same frailties of the Hesh, Your future is obviously more secure. By training and temperament you are equipped for worthwhile accomplishment. It is unlikely that your lives will be turbulent, or that you will ever be driven to frenzy by mirages in the California hills.
