'lf if V143 . 14144 'lille lililss ol' '47 again mounted the slilitrs that led to tliapel llall, excited and thrilled at the prospect ol entering college. l.ook at the freshmen. a voice sang out. Wait 'til initiation heg'ins, another was heard to reply ominously, llelore we knew it, initiation week with its horrors and trepidations was upon ns, The sophomores turned to ogres. and we, the hunted freslunen. scurried ahout in a vain elfort to save ourselves. NYho can ever forget the lnitiation Banquet? 'l'hat chicken pie was delectalile. hut we could not wholly appreciate it because ol' what was to follow our delmut lmefore the college in those hilarious skits we had concocted. and the fateful hour when we were to he lilindfolded and led to our doom hy the sophomores. .Xt last we were a part of the college populationeno longer were we derided and hamlioozled. Our reconciliation with the sophomores was complete when they gave us a party' in the gymnasium. Rememher that shy' group of girls who squatted ludian style on the Hoor in camaraderie with the Sophs, filling the air with laughter and those very songs we hear in the distance- l,et Me Call You Sweetheart , and XN'hen Irish liyes Are Sniiling ', as well as other familiar airs? We recall :Xnn Chase entertaining the Sophs and us with her accordion solos. Her vodelling proved that the cowlioy' spirit does not necessitate an actual ride out where the cactus hlooms and the coyotes wail . Suddenly we were in the midst of electing our class officers. Taking the honors were: .Nun Chase, President: lrene Berulme. Vice-l'residentg Clare Carrigan, Treasurer: Nancy Fowler, Secretary. .Xt first the academic portion of our college program appeared relatively easy, hut before long we were mournfully chanting Getting Nowhere Fast . A few dejected souls, groping for a last straw, hummed 'l'omorrow Is -Xnother Day . Heartily' agreeing with the adage All work and no play' make .lack a dull boy ', we iminediately commenced our search for diversion. Most of us turned to the NV. .iX. A. XYe took to athletics. XYho will ever forget those fighting' Frosh in their liaskethall tilt with the So-phomores? The skilled shooting' of Terry' Considine was, without a douht, The .Xnswer to a Prayer . After two glorious weeks of Cliristmas vacation, we returned to college to resume our studies and focussed our attention on the fast-apimroaching' mid-year examinations. Beyond them we could see the VY. A. .-X. semi-formal and vaguely wondered whether or no-t circumstances would permit us to secure That man f-or this all-important affair. NYe felt very proud of Betty U'Neill and Norma Noonan when they were chosen attendants to the Queen. Altliough we enjoyed ourselves tremendously at the dance, we could not thrust from our minds the battlefields of the world. A few days later, many' of us visited the Red Cross Blood Bank and each donated a pint of lilo-od. Then, too, the Collegiate Defense Committee was active making hoxes for those students who were spending the holiday in foxholes. Une of Salem's finest lecture programs that year was Dr. Hsieh's fascinating talk on Chinese customs, language, and culture. We were grateful for their information about foreign lands and peoples. The welcome mat was imleed spread out at every door at S. T. C. One of the most notable contributions of the ex-G. I.'s to our campus was the impetus to social life aml boost to female morale. I'll W'alk Alone was relegated to the shadows of obscurity, for between classes aml at lxmclx time groups of veterans aml girls strolled together exchanging news of home aml war fronts. Veterans returning to the Senior class were: john Folsom, Nick Guidara, John O'Shea, Saul Slavit, and Christie Zetes. The Seniors were the first class to profit from this influx of male population. Early in the fall, the CLIPPTER Dance was the first highlight of the '46-'47 season. An aHair usually supported chiefly by Seniors, it was heartening to receive enthusiastic backing from all classes. Sailing, Sailing Over the Bounding Main went this first venture of the CLIPPER, bringing in a good profit. Another welcome addition made possible by the returned veterans was the basketball games with other State Teachers Colleges. Such interest was awakened that a Boosters Club was formed to promote all sports for men at Salem, 1 4 ,f L1 'I ' fayq 1? Lectures which were particularly enjoyable were those of Dr. Guy Armitage and his portrayal of familiar Dickens characters, Mr. XYhitney's and Mr. VVood's art, poetry, and music appreciation program, and Dr. Mahoney's inspiring talk on civic education. junior Highs in the Shakespeare course found Laurence Olivier's Hviiry I' a rewarding experience, while memhers who had trained during the second quarter recalled the Repertory Theater's Henry VIII as their interesting Field trip. The entire class later saw Maurice Evans' Hamlet to top off their course. As always, we were noted for our originality. so the Class of '47 did its final Dancing ln The Dark at a dinner-dance. The gaiety of that evening faded into the solemnity of Baccalaureate Exercises, for here the seriousness of the future was impressed upon an eager-eyed group. As we gathered for last Chapel, the familiarity of Chapel procedure made us for a moment forget that this was our final participation in these exercises. VVith regret Seniors picked up the familiar hymnals for the last time. The farewell speeches of our president and President Sullivan was followed hy the presentation of the class gift hy Doris Murphy. Mo-ve-Up Exercises with their go-odhyes and good wishes from under- graduates opened the most wonderful day of our careers at Salem-Class Day. As roses were tossed in a farewell gesture, the notes of Salem, college of our hearts re-echoed with hnalitv to Seniors. The ffraduatin ' class then iroceeded . 6 c to a luncheon where the spirit of Auld Acquamtance permeated every minute. VVe returned to the college in the afternoon for the ivy planting and a feeling that this day was carrying us too rapidly toward last farewells. XYhen our tiny ivy had joined those of other classes to lend beauty to Salem's exterior, Seniors, parents and friends gathered at tea to relax in pleasant conversation. On june 10, as the lilack-gowned Seniors passed through the daisy chain carried by the juniors, Pomp and Circumstance spread its solemnity over graduates and friends. XVords of advice and encouragement from the speakers, a farewell from President Sullivan and Class Valedictorian highlighted Com- mencement Exercises.
