illurrmnrh We have selected the works of John Milton to emphasize the theme of our yearbook hecause we feel that although they are three hundred years old, they are still appropriatetoday. ln his twin poems, L'.JIl0gr0 and Il Pmzsfwoso, Milton expressed two attitudes toward lifegthe joyful and the sorrowful. In this Clifvfver we have recorded the lights and shadows of our years at Salem. XYe have had joys, and we have had sorrows. How could it he otherwise when our college days have also heen the days in which our country was engaged in the hloocliest war the world has ever known? .Xs our commencement approaches, a commencement for the world is also approacliingea time when mankind must hegin to shape a lasting peace. XYe realize that now is the time tor discussion and decision and, ahove all, for demo- cratic action, .X democracy cannot function without a free-thinking, free-speaking' people, Many of Nlilton's works also reveal him to he a man of these same ideals, ln lo4-l. in his .'ft'l'0lJtIfIIfll'lI, he expressed his helief in freedom of speech, freedoni of thought, and freedom of the press. l.et us repeat fervently the words of Xtordsworth.
