fcontmued from page 133 was putting asolrne tn our car we rntroduced ourselves and he told us hrs name was Glen Baker We asked htm w at he was dorng rn thrs part of the country He sard he was on hrs vacatron He sard he was the football coach at Ohro State He told us that Donme Ora Buchanan Tommre Abe Fouss and Jack Henry l-lendershot were hrs star players and that Rlchard Stevens was the athlet1c drrector We frrushed talkrng and went on our way As we traveled on toward Calrfornra we grew trred and sleepy We stopped at a Motel on the out SRIIIS of Sprrngfleld Illrnors As we were checkrng rn we saw a short plump woman wrth a baby 1n her arms To our surprtse tt was our best frrend from S L l-l S none other than Erma Jean Wolfert Erme Jean told us her husband was the owner of the motel We talked for a whrle and then went to our room as we wanted to leave early the next mornrng for our new destrnatron We rode all day unttl we came to Des Mornes Iowa As we were dr1v1ng through Des Mornes we saw a movre advertrsed whrch we wanted to see The trtle of thrs movxe was Srlly Romeo starrrng Claretta Hrlda McKa1n and Rrchard Wrllrams Carol and I always thought they would some day become movre stars After the movre we rented a room The next mormng as we started to get ln our car to leave some fellow called to us and turmn we saw our classmate Harold Broome He told us that 1f we ever needed help whtle rn that part o the country to call htm at hrs Jrffy Reparr Garage and he would grve us frrst class servrce next stop was at Topeka Kansas Whrle eatrng at a restaurant rn Topeka we notrced two grrls that looked very fam1l1ar Carol and I went to the1r table and found them to be Shrrley Mrller and Betty Jean Kehl We got to talkrng and Carol asked them rf they were marrred yet They sa1d that t ey were marrred to two of the wealthrest orl men 1n the state of Kansas As we were drrvtng along through Colorado we decrded we had better get some gasollne We stopped at a l1ttle town called Crlppled Creek A man came out to wart on us The mrnute Carol saw htm she knew he was Homer Hesson a fellow she used to go wtth rn hrgh school Carol asked htm rf he owned the statron and he told us that he and Walter Hendershot were partners We got out of the car and went 1DS1d6 to talk to Walter Walter told us that he and Homer were dorng very well w1th the statron and that they were old bachelors After brddrng them adreu we went on our way By the trme we got to Salt Lake Crty Utah rt was trme for the hot rod race Berng rnterested rn racrng we hurrred to the race track to vrew them We sat rn the very frrst row so we could see the drrvers It was not lon untrl the f1rst race started and as the cars rounded the far turn we notlced that cars No 7 an 11 were out front runnmg bumper to bumper As they came rn front of the bleachers we recognlzed the drrver of No 7 as Ronme Gerken and No 11 to be Gerald Kendall As they went around the far turn the1r fenders hrt and No 11 went through the guard rarl comm to a stop near the prts As No 11 came to a stop we saw a mechamc run out toward the stoppe racer It was Roy Hupp the hrghest pa1d mechanrc at the track After the race was over we went to get somethrng to eat and rented a hotel room for the mght The next mornrng we got up brrght and early and left for Reno Nevada When we got there we went to a Hotel and rented a room for the mght After freshenmg up a b1t we went down starrs to the Snack Bar Eatrng a sandwrch at the snack bar and talkrng about our hopes for a new Job we d1d not not1c'e a pert runette SII down on the stool next to us untrl she called us by name Turmng around we saw our classmate Patsy Lauer Patsy told us she was a specral agent workmg . . . .. ..
