CLASS HI TORY Our class hrstory goes back to 1950 when we entered the seventh grade, Wlth Mr Moore our sponsor We began th1s year wrth an enrollment of 36 members Glennre Baker Davrd Baker Dale Barth Donald Buchanan Harold Broome Walter Brooks Barbara Davrs Opal Forshey Thomas Fouss Ellen Gerken Vera Krdd Ronald Gerken Maxrne Lent Ronald Hall Julra Lauer Gary Haas Grace Martrn Larry Hesson Donald Myers Jack Hendershot Shrrley Mrller Walter Hendershot Marrlyn Ogle Betty Kehl Dorothy Patterson Gerald Kendall Frances Ramage Maxrne Roe Leona Stark Thomas Tayler Wrllram McConaha Carol Ullman Erma Wolfert Irvrn Wolfert Barton Yohn Shrrley North Durrng the year we lost Shrrley North Ellen Gerken Davrd Baker Barton Yohn and Thomas Taylor Th1s year was the begrnnrng of our excrtrng lrfe as Junror Hrgh School students Some of the actrvrtres were Junror Band Basketball Glee Club and the Mrnstrel Show For the frrst trme Mr Moore chose 5 reserve mayorettes They were Marrlyn Ogle Opal Forshey Maxrne Roe Barbara Davrs and Carol Ullman When we entered the erghth grade we found qurte a number of our students mrssrng As follows Vera Krdd Larry Hesson Wrllram McConaha Dorothy Patterson Maxrne Roe and Shrrley North To equal thrs up a lrttle we garned Davrd Baker Drck Wrllrams Juanrta Krng and Melba Haley who came here from Nashvrlle Tennessee Our act1v1t1es th1s year consrsted of about the same as rn the seventh grade but th1s year brought about a lrttle change Some of the Iunror Band members blew themselves rrght rnto the Senror Band Th1S year Mrs Moore was our sponsor In Aprrl we took the erghth grade tests A number of students came down from Macksburg to take rt wrth us Ronald Hall ranked hrghest 1n our class Several recerved honorable mentron We started off our Freshman year wrth a bang Mr Moore was agarn our sponsor Th1s berng hlgh school socrety We grrls had our frrst opportunity of berng rn FHA Other currrcula actrvrtres were Band Glee Club Basketball and the Freshman Chrrstmas Play We acqurred erght and lost four students durrng the year From Macksburg we were glad to welcome Claretta McKarn Roy Hupp Marlene Murray and Donald Morgenstern Leonard Blgley Eddre Schantz Ernest Drllon and Larry Markel came from drfferent schools Those who left durmg the frrst semester were Maxrne Roe Juanrta Krng Frances Ramage and Iunror Carter Toward the end of the year we even had a lrttle money rn our pocket We attarned th1s by havrng an rce cream socral down on the hrgh school lawn one evenrng Wrse Fools otherwrse known as Sophomores that was us rn our 2nd year of hrgh school Mr Ullman was our sponsor We rncreased our ranks wrth Larry Wrlson and Frank Swarn Our loss Leonard Brgley Earnest Drllon Larry Markel Eddre Schantz and Marlene Murray th1s leavmg us a total enroll ment of 33 Thrs was the brg year for the boys as some of them were placed on the Reserve Basketball team They were Glennre Baker Donnre Buchanan Jack Hendershot Tommre Fouss, Dave Baker and Rrchard Wrl lrams Th1s year was frlled wrth loads of act1v1t1es although we drdn t get to our County Track Meet due to rarn Our graduatrng funds were growrng raprdly We had a bake sale ch1l1 supper food raffle, and an ice cream socral Drck Wrllrams our wrnner of the conservatron test, went on a two day tour wrth other Washrngton County puprls over the Muskrngum Conservancy Drstrrct ' , ' , as our first year of high school we felt like little lost sheep, but we soon found our way around in ' I D I ' . lConnnuedj Th1s year brought on the frrst real rmportant h1ghl1ghts of our hrgh school l1fe Mr Ullman was agarn our sponsor and we had an enrollment of 31 Ruth Fowler and R1chard Stevens came out from Manetta durmg the frrst semester between the tenth and eleventh grades we lost Maxrne Lent To add to our treasury thrs year we had a bake sale 1ce cream soc1al and ch1l1 sale at school Then when Sprlng rolled around everyone looked forward to our Junror Class Play whrch was entrtled Tattletale Th1s wa.sn t the only rmportant event of our Junlor year On May 7th the Jumor and Semor Banquet was held 1n the hrgh school gym Our mothers cooked and served the Banquet After everyone had frmshed thrs dellc 1ous meal we moved on to the Macksburg Gym where we had a prom Th1S was qurte a new thrng srnce Salem had not had a prom rn qurte a few years The 12th year of our school lrfe was one of the most actrve years rn school We began the year wrth most of the same famllrar faces The most fam1l1ar face was that of Mr Ullman our advrsor for the past two years As we d1scovered tn takrng our role we had 30 members rn our class as follows Glenme Baker Ronald Gerken Ruth Fowler Marrlyn Ogle Davrd Baker Ronald Hall Betty Kehl Carol Ullman Dale Barth Gary Haas Gerald Kendall Erma Wolfert Donald Buchanan Jack Hendershot Julta Lauer Rrchard W1ll1ams Harold Broome Walter Hendershot Patsy Lauer Frank Swarn Barbara Davrs Roy Hupp Grace Martm Rrchard Stevens Opal Forshey Homer Hesson Shrrley Mrller Claretta MCKHIH Thomas Fouss Donald Myers In changrng grades we lost Walter Brooks and Don Morgenstern but durrng the year we gatned Homer Hesson who came from Dexter Crty Mr Hokman the new Math teacher was 1n charge of the Semors room Th1S year thrngs were changed some for the semors Because of so many act1v1t1es when school started we had to postpone our class play untrl early 1n the Sprrng It was entrtled Best Foot Forward As most of you wrll well remember Ih1S year brought to Salem Lrberty the best basketball team there ever was We had the frrst county champlons srnce the team rn 1945 The reason we thought so much of thrs partrcular Champ1onsh1p team was that they were all members of th1s year s graduatrng class of 1956 Not only was the team f om our class but also the head cheerleader Barbara Davrs as well To help defray the graduattng expenses thrs year we sold ch1l1 at school pop at the basketball games an chocolate mrlk at noons rn the Ag bulldtng Several from our class took the Semor Scholarshrp tests at lvlarretta on February 21st On February 29 ve took the Aptrtude tests grven us by the Marletta Employment Agency We completed our School Days by havtng Baccalaureate on May 6 and Commencement on May 18 CLASS PROPHECY Carol and I are on our tr1p to Caltforma to become models As we were travelrng along 1n our 1966 Thunderbrrd we were passlng through Indlana and bern hungry as we always are we stopped at the Palace Restaurant The owner of the restaurant greeted us at t e door He looked lrke a boy we used to 0 to school wtth As he was showmg us to our table we got to talk1ng We soon learned that he was Davrd Ba er H told us that he was marrred and domg very well wrth the restaurar' ' We frmshed eatrng and started on our way We had gone only a few mrles out ofthe state of Indrana when we ran out of gas So we got out and trred to thumb to the nearest f1ll1ng statlon We weren t stand mg there very long when a car stopped besrde us The young man was drrvlng the 66 Ford and asked us 1f we would ltke a rrde We told hrm that we ran out of gasolrne and he offered to grve us some of hrs As he fcontrnued on page 141 . . , .
