I I I lConnnuedj Th1s year brought on the frrst real rmportant h1ghl1ghts of our hrgh school l1fe Mr Ullman was agarn our sponsor and we had an enrollment of 31 Ruth Fowler and R1chard Stevens came out from Manetta durmg the frrst semester between the tenth and eleventh grades we lost Maxrne Lent To add to our treasury thrs year we had a bake sale 1ce cream soc1al and ch1l1 sale at school Then when Sprlng rolled around everyone looked forward to our Junror Class Play whrch was entrtled Tattletale Th1s wa.sn t the only rmportant event of our Junlor year On May 7th the Jumor and Semor Banquet was held 1n the hrgh school gym Our mothers cooked and served the Banquet After everyone had frmshed thrs dellc 1ous meal we moved on to the Macksburg Gym where we had a prom Th1S was qurte a new thrng srnce Salem had not had a prom rn qurte a few years The 12th year of our school lrfe was one of the most actrve years rn school We began the year wrth most of the same famllrar faces The most fam1l1ar face was that of Mr Ullman our advrsor for the past two years As we d1scovered tn takrng our role we had 30 members rn our class as follows Glenme Baker Ronald Gerken Ruth Fowler Marrlyn Ogle Davrd Baker Ronald Hall Betty Kehl Carol Ullman Dale Barth Gary Haas Gerald Kendall Erma Wolfert Donald Buchanan Jack Hendershot Julta Lauer Rrchard W1ll1ams Harold Broome Walter Hendershot Patsy Lauer Frank Swarn Barbara Davrs Roy Hupp Grace Martm Rrchard Stevens Opal Forshey Homer Hesson Shrrley Mrller Claretta MCKHIH Thomas Fouss Donald Myers In changrng grades we lost Walter Brooks and Don Morgenstern but durrng the year we gatned Homer Hesson who came from Dexter Crty Mr Hokman the new Math teacher was 1n charge of the Semors room Th1S year thrngs were changed some for the semors Because of so many act1v1t1es when school started we had to postpone our class play untrl early 1n the Sprrng It was entrtled Best Foot Forward As most of you wrll well remember Ih1S year brought to Salem Lrberty the best basketball team there ever was We had the frrst county champlons srnce the team rn 1945 The reason we thought so much of thrs partrcular Champ1onsh1p team was that they were all members of th1s year s graduatrng class of 1956 Not only was the team f om our class but also the head cheerleader Barbara Davrs as well To help defray the graduattng expenses thrs year we sold ch1l1 at school pop at the basketball games an chocolate mrlk at noons rn the Ag bulldtng Several from our class took the Semor Scholarshrp tests at lvlarretta on February 21st On February 29 ve took the Aptrtude tests grven us by the Marletta Employment Agency We completed our School Days by havtng Baccalaureate on May 6 and Commencement on May 18 CLASS PROPHECY Carol and I are on our tr1p to Caltforma to become models As we were travelrng along 1n our 1966 Thunderbrrd we were passlng through Indlana and bern hungry as we always are we stopped at the Palace Restaurant The owner of the restaurant greeted us at t e door He looked lrke a boy we used to 0 to school wtth As he was showmg us to our table we got to talk1ng We soon learned that he was Davrd Ba er H told us that he was marrred and domg very well wrth the restaurar' ' We frmshed eatrng and started on our way We had gone only a few mrles out ofthe state of Indrana when we ran out of gas So we got out and trred to thumb to the nearest f1ll1ng statlon We weren t stand mg there very long when a car stopped besrde us The young man was drrvlng the 66 Ford and asked us 1f we would ltke a rrde We told hrm that we ran out of gasolrne and he offered to grve us some of hrs As he fcontrnued on page 141 . . , . ' U . . . . , - fcontmued from page 133 was putting asolrne tn our car we rntroduced ourselves and he told us hrs name was Glen Baker We asked htm w at he was dorng rn thrs part of the country He sard he was on hrs vacatron He sard he was the football coach at Ohro State He told us that Donme Ora Buchanan Tommre Abe Fouss and Jack Henry l-lendershot were hrs star players and that Rlchard Stevens was the athlet1c drrector We frrushed talkrng and went on our way As we traveled on toward Calrfornra we grew trred and sleepy We stopped at a Motel on the out SRIIIS of Sprrngfleld Illrnors As we were checkrng rn we saw a short plump woman wrth a baby 1n her arms To our surprtse tt was our best frrend from S L l-l S none other than Erma Jean Wolfert Erme Jean told us her husband was the owner of the motel We talked for a whrle and then went to our room as we wanted to leave early the next mornrng for our new destrnatron We rode all day unttl we came to Des Mornes Iowa As we were dr1v1ng through Des Mornes we saw a movre advertrsed whrch we wanted to see The trtle of thrs movxe was Srlly Romeo starrrng Claretta Hrlda McKa1n and Rrchard Wrllrams Carol and I always thought they would some day become movre stars After the movre we rented a room The next mormng as we started to get ln our car to leave some fellow called to us and turmn we saw our classmate Harold Broome He told us that 1f we ever needed help whtle rn that part o the country to call htm at hrs Jrffy Reparr Garage and he would grve us frrst class servrce next stop was at Topeka Kansas Whrle eatrng at a restaurant rn Topeka we notrced two grrls that looked very fam1l1ar Carol and I went to the1r table and found them to be Shrrley Mrller and Betty Jean Kehl We got to talkrng and Carol asked them rf they were marrred yet They sa1d that t ey were marrred to two of the wealthrest orl men 1n the state of Kansas As we were drrvtng along through Colorado we decrded we had better get some gasollne We stopped at a l1ttle town called Crlppled Creek A man came out to wart on us The mrnute Carol saw htm she knew he was Homer Hesson a fellow she used to go wtth rn hrgh school Carol asked htm rf he owned the statron and he told us that he and Walter Hendershot were partners We got out of the car and went 1DS1d6 to talk to Walter Walter told us that he and Homer were dorng very well w1th the statron and that they were old bachelors After brddrng them adreu we went on our way By the trme we got to Salt Lake Crty Utah rt was trme for the hot rod race Berng rnterested rn racrng we hurrred to the race track to vrew them We sat rn the very frrst row so we could see the drrvers It was not lon untrl the f1rst race started and as the cars rounded the far turn we notlced that cars No 7 an 11 were out front runnmg bumper to bumper As they came rn front of the bleachers we recognlzed the drrver of No 7 as Ronme Gerken and No 11 to be Gerald Kendall As they went around the far turn the1r fenders hrt and No 11 went through the guard rarl comm to a stop near the prts As No 11 came to a stop we saw a mechamc run out toward the stoppe racer It was Roy Hupp the hrghest pa1d mechanrc at the track After the race was over we went to get somethrng to eat and rented a hotel room for the mght The next mornrng we got up brrght and early and left for Reno Nevada When we got there we went to a Hotel and rented a room for the mght After freshenmg up a b1t we went down starrs to the Snack Bar Eatrng a sandwrch at the snack bar and talkrng about our hopes for a new Job we d1d not not1c'e a pert runette SII down on the stool next to us untrl she called us by name Turmng around we saw our classmate Patsy Lauer Patsy told us she was a specral agent workmg . . . .. .. ' . h fconttnued from page l4j for the F B I She had come to Reno to check on a big gambler s rncome tax statements She also told us that three other members of that wonderful class of 56 were l1v1ng in Reno Grace Martin was the receptionist that helped you plan your trips at the Reno office of United Airways Corporation Julia Lauer was very busy as the wife of the owner of the Great Drvrde Motel Marilyn O le was married to a Uranium prospector who had just sold one of hrs claims for a m1l lion and a hal dollars As we sat there talking and gazrng around the piano and guitar player looked famillar Golng over to the band which was playrng You Wore a Tulip we saw that the piano player was once our classmate Donnie Myers Soft sweet music was coming from a guitar played by Gary Haas The next morning when we ot up there was a paper under our door So we picked rt up and started to read it We were loo ing through the pa es when we came to the sports page The sports column was written by Dale Barth We wondered 1 it could be the same fellow we went to school with So we went down to the newspaper office to see him And sure enough tt was He took us to lunch we talked over old times and after lunch Carol and I went on to our next destination Our next stop was Las Vegas Nevada When we got there we decided we would like to go to a night club srnce we had never been to one After we rented a hotel room and relaxed we went to a mght club on 42nd Street After reachtng our table we saw a small orchestra Carol and I were lookin at the orchestra and saw a trumpet player who looked like Ronnie Hall After the or chestra finrs ed playing this number a girl came out to s1ng a song When she started to sing we we went back to talk to Ronnie and Leona F1n1sh1ng our talk we went back to our table The next act we saw was a b1cycle act And who should be riding the bicycle but Frank Swarn After his act we went back to our hotel room The next day we left early for Los Angeles California As we were driving through Los Angeles we saw posters everywhere advertrstng the big trapeze act wrth the Ringlin Brothers Circus Carol suggested that we go and see this act Upon arriving at the circus we trre our luck at knocking over coke bottles but without much success After spending all of our money except the price of adm1ss1on into the big top we purchased our trckets and went to our seats Just as we sat down the band started to play and the master of ceremonies came out and announced the feature attraction of the evening which was to take place on the high wire Following the beam of the spot light as tt pierced it s way into the heights of the tent we spted two figures perched upon platforms 00 feet in the arr We could not drstingursh who they were but they were wearing trapeze outfits which mostly consisted of ostrich plumes 'md expensive Jewels With a roll of the drums the grrls grasped the swinging bars and while suspended rn mid air they turned tuple somersaults got the other swing ing bar and returned to the opposite platform Whrle the crowd roared rm approval the girls swung down to the ground and we recognized them as Opal Forshey and Barbara Davis our classmates After their performance they offered to take us out to dinner at the Stork Club rn Hollywood After a wonderful dinner we sa1d good by to Barb and Opal The next morning we went to the Catalina Swrmmmg Suit Company to see about the modeling job which they had offered to Carol and me Ruth and Carol , , . , .
