CLASS HISTORY As we entered the 7th grade back rn 1949 wrth Mr Moore as our sponsor the followtng students were enrolled rn our class James Barley George Krdd Darlene Secrest Delores Brooks Herbert Lent Jeantnne Stark Delbert Clegg Larry Mankrns Donna stauch Dorus Decker Beulah McCune Lester Ullmann Russell Drllehay Wrlbert Mrller Edgar Wrlson Charles Goodwrll Myrna Montgomery Sam Wasson Sue Hall Robert Myers Dorothy Young James Hockenberry Shrrley Orr June Morgemtern Donna Kathary Dean Rummer The followtng students came tn durrng the year Charles Barlow Helen Clegg Juntor Lauer and Juanrta Wells Clyde Schramm and Kay Brehl were enrolled rn our class for a short t1me We took part rn many school actrvttres whtch rncluded the mlnstrel show glee club and the juntor Band The members from our class who were rn the Juntor Band were as follows Sue Hall Donna Stauch Dorothy Young Donna Kathary Larry Mankrns Charles Goodwtll Sam Wasson Darlene Secrest and Myrna Montgomery Durtng the 8th grade we dtd not gatn anyone tn our class but we lost Beaulah McCune Mrs Moore was our sponsor Three teachers who left the faculty that year were Mrs Mary Rrchards our home economrcs teacher Brll Wolfe our coach and hrstory teacher and Roy Dletrrch the grrculture teacher When we took our 8th grade state tests rn the sprrng the 8th grade students from Macksburg came down to take the tests wrth us and remarned as our guests at the werner roast that followed Charles Goodwrll placed 8th rn the county and the ones who recerved honorable mentron were Robert Myers James Hocken berry Delores Brooks and Dorothy Young Some of the members went from the Iuntor Band rnto thc senror Band They were Donna Kathary Donna Stauch Sue Hall Sam Wasson Dorothy Young Darlene Secrest Larry Mankrns and Myrna Montgomery Besrdes partrctpatrng rn the usual band shows at basketball games street parades and sprrng concert most of us appeared rn the annual mrnstrel show wtth the 7th graders That was the year of the brg snow when we awoke the day after Thanksgrvrng to frnd snowdrtfts two to three feet deep Naturally we got out of school for more than a week rn fact We Jumped from the erghth grade rnto the freshman year of htgh school wrth Mrs Juantta Ullmann the new home economrc teacher as our sponsor At the same trme we garned Jean Schoeppner Bonnre Barlow and Roger Hupp from Macksburg Mary Lewrs from Portland Ohro and Rrchard and John Schrllrng from Dexter Crty Hrgh School The new coach and hrstory teacher was Mr Bernard Wrrght Jr Durrng thrs year we engaged rn many school actrvttres rncludtng band mrxed chorus F H A and basket ball bhrrley Orr became one of our majorettes thrs year Jean Schoeppner and Darlene Secrest were the cheer leaders from our class. fCont1nued on page 141 1 1 1 I 1 1 1 . 1 1 1 1 . 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 , . . . . 1 1 1 1 1 - 1 Q , 3 . CLASS HISTORY fCont from page 131 10TH ln 1952 we became what some people often call wtse fools or Sophomores Mrs Ullmann agarn was our sponsor Our class tncreased tn number by havrng Ruth Warner and Paul Rothensteln enroll 1n our school Thrs gatn drd not last long before school was out we had lost Darlene Secrest George Krdd Paul Rothen stten Jeamnne Stark John Schtlltng Charles Barlow Larry Mankrns and Russell Dtllehay Two of our after school actrvttres rncluded a game booth tn the carnrval the Juntors sponsored ln the town hall at Lower Salem and a skatrng party held at the Marretta Roller Rtnk The Calamrty that struck us rn the sprrng of 1953 was an eprdemrc of scarletra that closed our doors for well over a week 11TH Durrng thrs grade wrth Mrs Ullmann as our sponsor once agarn Fred Gessel Frank Farnese Dale Lauer and Drck Cutlrp tncreased our ranks But durtng the same year we lost Helen Clegg Lester Ullmann Edgar Wrlson Dean Rummer and Drck Cutltp leavtng a total of 26 1n our class We recelved our class rrngs a few weeks after school began Perhaps the hlgh l1ght ot th1s year was the Juntor Senror Banquet whtch was held May 8th at the Betsey Mtlls Club rn Marretta followed by a movte at the Colony Theater We drd not get to go to the county wtde track meet rn Marretta th1s year rt was postponed because of ram Some of the fund rarsrng act1v1t1es we partrcrpated LD were a bake sale at the close of a P T A meet1ng entttled Frardy Cat on Aprrl 2 1954 Some of our class members extended therr actrvrtres beyond school hours by attendtng summer meettngs ,hm Hockenberry our class presrdent represented us at Buckeye Boy s State Camp at Camp Perry on Lake Erre where he won a trophy tn a Safety Slogan Contest Sue Hall represented the F H A at F H A State Camp near New Phrladelphxa for one week 1n August 12TH Thrs was the b1g year' Thrngs happened so fast to us 'that we almost could not evaluate the senror months well enough to wrtte about them In nrne short months we crammed tn the essentrals leadrng to graduauon credtts made up at the last mrnute prctures taken at Ftscher s Studro the Year Book comprled and shrpped off to the prrnters tnvrtatrons and name cards ordered and dtstrrbuted among frrends and the baccalaureate and graduatton exerctses planned and rehearsed We dtd stop long enough to let Mrs Ullmann our sponsor count noses the ftrst week of school only to ftnd Roy Cunntngham had come from Harrtetsvrlle to push our enrollment up to 27 Jean Schoeppner began her fourth year as cheerleader Donna Stauch for her second year Shtrley Orr was majorette for her fourth year Realrztng that our mam extra currtcular job of the year was to ratse money to defray graduatton and senror tr1p expenses we started the frnancral dr1ve wrth a successful carntval held for the ftrst t1me tn the school butldrng In December we presented a three act farce l-Llllbrlly Courtshrp We sold pop at the basketball games, and all occasron cards among frtends and netghbors In the sprrng we held a bake sale tn Martetta a turkey raffle, a sale of sweatshirts, and the serving of school lunches. We also put on the Junior class play
