V - , . . . , . . . . . . . . . . . - 1 1 , . . . 1 1 CLASS HISTORY fCont from page 131 10TH ln 1952 we became what some people often call wtse fools or Sophomores Mrs Ullmann agarn was our sponsor Our class tncreased tn number by havrng Ruth Warner and Paul Rothensteln enroll 1n our school Thrs gatn drd not last long before school was out we had lost Darlene Secrest George Krdd Paul Rothen stten Jeamnne Stark John Schtlltng Charles Barlow Larry Mankrns and Russell Dtllehay Two of our after school actrvttres rncluded a game booth tn the carnrval the Juntors sponsored ln the town hall at Lower Salem and a skatrng party held at the Marretta Roller Rtnk The Calamrty that struck us rn the sprrng of 1953 was an eprdemrc of scarletra that closed our doors for well over a week 11TH Durrng thrs grade wrth Mrs Ullmann as our sponsor once agarn Fred Gessel Frank Farnese Dale Lauer and Drck Cutlrp tncreased our ranks But durtng the same year we lost Helen Clegg Lester Ullmann Edgar Wrlson Dean Rummer and Drck Cutltp leavtng a total of 26 1n our class We recelved our class rrngs a few weeks after school began Perhaps the hlgh l1ght ot th1s year was the Juntor Senror Banquet whtch was held May 8th at the Betsey Mtlls Club rn Marretta followed by a movte at the Colony Theater We drd not get to go to the county wtde track meet rn Marretta th1s year rt was postponed because of ram Some of the fund rarsrng act1v1t1es we partrcrpated LD were a bake sale at the close of a P T A meet1ng entttled Frardy Cat on Aprrl 2 1954 Some of our class members extended therr actrvrtres beyond school hours by attendtng summer meettngs ,hm Hockenberry our class presrdent represented us at Buckeye Boy s State Camp at Camp Perry on Lake Erre where he won a trophy tn a Safety Slogan Contest Sue Hall represented the F H A at F H A State Camp near New Phrladelphxa for one week 1n August 12TH Thrs was the b1g year' Thrngs happened so fast to us 'that we almost could not evaluate the senror months well enough to wrtte about them In nrne short months we crammed tn the essentrals leadrng to graduauon credtts made up at the last mrnute prctures taken at Ftscher s Studro the Year Book comprled and shrpped off to the prrnters tnvrtatrons and name cards ordered and dtstrrbuted among frrends and the baccalaureate and graduatton exerctses planned and rehearsed We dtd stop long enough to let Mrs Ullmann our sponsor count noses the ftrst week of school only to ftnd Roy Cunntngham had come from Harrtetsvrlle to push our enrollment up to 27 Jean Schoeppner began her fourth year as cheerleader Donna Stauch for her second year Shtrley Orr was majorette for her fourth year Realrztng that our mam extra currtcular job of the year was to ratse money to defray graduatton and senror tr1p expenses we started the frnancral dr1ve wrth a successful carntval held for the ftrst t1me tn the school butldrng In December we presented a three act farce l-Llllbrlly Courtshrp We sold pop at the basketball games, and all occasron cards among frtends and netghbors In the sprrng we held a bake sale tn Martetta a turkey raffle, a sale of sweatshirts, and the serving of school lunches. I I ' CLASS PROPHECY Late one cold and slrppery wrnter evenrng Bonnxe and I were drrvtng home from our televrston show where we were brlled as the Fabulous Ntghtrngales at Nashvrlle Tennessee We were feelrng qurte groggy from lack of sleep All at once I screamed Bonnte looked up 1n ttme to see a telephone pole rushlng at us She slammed on the brakes and skrdded tnto the pole For a whtle everythlng was blank and ftnally when the haze began to clear away I saw a strange looktng frgure commg toward us I looked once bltnked and looked agarn thrs trme to recogmze the frgure of St Peter beckontng us to follow htm through the Golden Gate As we followed htm down the streets paved wrth gold he potnted out to us some of the marvelous bu1ld1ngs tn th1s Golden Ctty The one butldtng we were most tnterested ln was the Archrves Butldtng whrch St Peter s assrstant kept the records We came to a certatn spot tn the heavem where we could see the earth below us parttcularly the Untted States We were scanntng thrs former world of ours from above when Bonme saw someone who looked very famrltar At ftrst she couldn t recogmze htm but tt ftnally occurred to her that he was Robert Myers the tntellectual member of our class who graduated ten years ago Thls mornrng Robert looked worrted Upon closer scruttny we saw why he was golng up the campus walk to conduct h1S f1rst chemtstry class at Ohto Untverstty Bonnte and I began wonderrng what had happened to the rest of our classmates and what they were dotng We asked St Peter to help us fmd out about them He agreed to help and took us to the east lookout tower After gettrng accustomed to the great herght we were able to locate our old Alma Mater Much to our sur prtse we found the hrgh school larger and even more beautrful than tt had been ten years ago We looked through an open wrndow 1nto the home economtcs room hoprng to fmd Mrs Ullmann our sponsor stttrng at her desk making out the datly menu for her class We were agatn greatly surprlsed when we saw a former classmate of ours sttttng tn Mrs Ullmann s chatr Oh' Yes we remember now Juantta Wells went to Ohto State to major rn home economrcs and she had evrdently come back and taken over Mrs Ullmann s Job Wh1le we were lookrng around the h1gh school we glanced toward Wh1pple trytng to recapture a few mem ortes A terrtble racket caused us to look msrde The Whtpple Machtne Shop owned by Junror and Dale Lauer They were repalrtng Dorus Decker s racer which he had brought home from Indtanapolrs where he was star racer on the Indtanapolts Speedway Ruth Warner h1s wtfe was there wtth htm Just as she was wrth htm at all the races Stnce there were no more fam1l1ar faces around Wh1pple we turned sltghtly to the rrght only to fmd we are lookrng at Columbus the state capttal We look through an open door to recogmze Sam Wasson the governor drctatmg a letter to hrs prtvate secretary Dorothy Young Mr Governor rang a bell on h1s desk and a few mlnutes later the butler brought 1n some tea At fust we dtdn t recogmze h1m because he looked so dlgrufted but we dectded rt was Fred Gessel Smce Hollywood Caltfornta was always a popular place among us teen agers we thought we would vtstt there Two of our classmates had always wanted to go to Hollywood to become famous As we looked over Caltforma Bonnte thought we should try the btg nrght clubs and so we peered tnto several clubs for some trace of them We saw them tn Cuo s tap dancrng just as they had always wanted to do They were none other than Donna Stauch and 11m Barley The Dewdrops Therr act recerved a heavy round of applau SC QCont1hued on page 171 , . . a 1 - l ' I ' I ' Y 1 , . .
