(Not available for photo: Cheryl Hung, Melissa Butcher, Annalisa Ouellette, Business Editor.) I quickly learned that you “can’t judge a book by its cover,” especially a Yearbook. I thought a Yearbook consisted of pasting pictures and light typing, but I was wrong. If it wasn’t for some very dedicated Staff Members, this Yearbook wouldn’t have been completed until the year 2089. I would personally like to thank Kristen Fabiszewski for sorting through hundreds of candids and doing all the layouts; Cheryl Hung for creating the collage, typing the LONG Class Will, and being there to help; Lauren Bradbury for brightening up each page with her creative artwork; Keith Cronin for overseeing the Faculty Pictures and typing; Matt Foran for typing names and quote after quote under Senior pictures; Diana Cummings for soliciting ads and always willing to do more than her share. A sincere thank you to Mrs. Driscoll and Mrs. Kucker for consoling us, laughing with us, giving us helpful advice, supporting us, and most of all being there for us. Good Luck Class of 1989! It all started in 1985, our Freshman Year, when we came through the front doors as naive little girls and boys. At that time, however, we thought we were really something special; just graduate from the Big 8th Grade. What an adjustment it was for us to get used to the enormous building with the color-coded floors. Almost all of us have, at one time or another, found ourselves in the wrong classroom because we assumed we were on Orange floor because we looked at the orange which are on blue floor. Or was it the green lockers on orange floor or the blue lockers on green? Our student handbooks didn’t tell us that the people who installed the lockers were color blind. Many of the girls puzzled over the ability of the upper-class-woman to produce such marvelous creations with their hair, but it is now obvious that the Class of 89 has mastered this handicraft. Our Freshman year was an exploring year for us. In Middle School we never had such spacious paths to roam as we discovered in these corridors. By the end of Freshman year a few of us thought that we knew every nook and cranny of Salem High, but for most of us Sophomore year would bring more exciting routes. In 1986, we entered Salem High an hour earlier and with a somewhat snotty attitude. Now we were no longer babies; no longer tadpoles in the pond. This was our school now! We took great pleasure in bothering the freshmen. It was exciting to have our Football Team become Northeast Conference Champions that year. Only slightly less exciting was the day we were sent home early because of the waterbreak. What a waste of hairspray, mousse, and gel! This was the year in which we were introduced to Project Adventure. Those knot-crazy gym teachers drove us up the wall every day. It was also a bit hard to believe that getting all muddy wading through a swamp was required to receive a diploma two years later. Of course, some of us decided to wait until Senior year to enjoy all the fun at once. By the end of Sophomore year we were ready to become official upperclassmen. Since the ceiling repairs had finally begun, we packed up our rain gear, our umbrellas and our dingies, and hoped for a dry Junior year. 1987 saw us already eagerly looking toward graduation. We now knew the school inside and out. For many of us (and probably for our families too) the most memorable thing about Junior year was getting our licenses. Finally we had freedom! This would be the end of Salem boredom! For a while it was! How many nights did we spend driving back and forth between McDonald ' s and Big Fred’s and to the summer feature attraction, the Willows??? How much gas did we bum? Like anything 140 else, it became old pretty soon and Salem was as boring as ever. Halloween brings back many memories for the men of our class. Just as people thought they were beginning to grow up, vicious rumors were heardabout the hoarding of large numbers of pumpkins. Oh well, those are our boys. When June came we were sick of being in school, but there was a feeling of superiority growing among us. The Seniors were gone and we began to realize that we too were coming to the end of the line. One year left!! Finally, after a long and extremely hot summer, we strolled into Salem High for our last year as Seniors!!! Now we were it and we knew it!! We had nothing to prove anymore. Some of us began the “Senior Slide” in September, while others managed to wait until after the first semester. Our football team may not have risen to the top as we had hoped, but it wasn’t for lack of trying. And the senior girls sure did give them great encouragement with their outstanding Pep Rally skit. We excelled in other Athletic Fields. Our Basketball Team was defending champions of our conference, won it all again and went all the way to the finals in the Garden before losing a Heartbreaker. They may have lost the game in the Garden, but their hairdos won hands down. Our Lacrosse Team even sparkled, winning two games, a feat unheard of in years past. And, of course, our Baseball Team is headed for the tournament as usual. Its biggest problem seems to be getting home from games on time to practice for the next game. It seems people don’t believe that one of our players can write his name, and they ask him to do it over, and over, and over again. Memories of the four superheroes of our class who attacked a robber in a gas station will stick with us forever; as well as the priceless memory of certain delinquents among us who went for a ride from the Golf Course to the Police Station in a luxury paddy wagon. All in all, our four years have been great; and we even got the precious Prom Glasses that we whined over! Good Bye and Good Luck to the Classes of 1990 and beyond, we will always know that we were the best, but life will go on without us at Salem High. Written by: Meghan Walsh, Class Historian “89” 141 FRIENDS ARE FRIENDS FOREVER Lying on a borrowed bed Thoughts are rushing through my head Staring at a half-packed suitcase On the floor Just a couple of days is all it takes Closer friends than a lifetime makes And I can’t imagine Closing that door For the last time. Emotions so strong Denied for far too long The God that’s within Is brought out in song CHORUS We learned to love and we came to care When I reach out you won’t be there But in my heart I know Friends are friends forever Wipe away those tears my friend My love for you will never end ’Cause in my heart I know Friends are friends forever Even though our time flew by The best of times we can’t deny Thinking of these priceless moments Makes me cry So when the tears begin to pour Remember — that’s what friends are for And I can’t imagine Closing that door For the last time. Emotions so strong Denied for far too long The God that’s within Is brought out in song CHORUS Singing our love Sway hand in hand Don’t stop and try To understand CHORUS Friends are friends forever. Lyrics and music written and composed by Matthew Foran and John Perry 142 MELSONG ipi A time will come when we’ll look back. We’ll think of all the memories of our past. We’ll remember all those special times we shared. And we’ll remember all those people for whom we cared. We’ll think of those memories when we are feeling down. Or when we are wishing that our friends were still around. Or thinking of when one of us was feeling blue, The other always seemed to know just what to do. When one thought that no one cared. The other held out their hand to say that they would always be there. So when you think back to these days. Remember you are in my heart for always. CHORUS You are the smile that brightens my days, You are my friend for always. You are my bright Hawaiian sun. You are the one with whom I have fun. You are my guiding light. You bring the hope into my life. I give you my heart and my soul. Because I had been part, you made me whole. And if you should ever go away. In my heart you will forever stay. And if I should ever go away, I hope that in your heart I will forever stay. Hold the memories and the friendships dear. So when we are far apart we will still be near. Because soon my friend we may part, But we will remain forever in each others hearts. We may seem to go our separate ways. Somehow though, together we will always stay. CHORUS You are the smile that brightens my days, You are my friend for always. You are my bright Hawaiian sun, You are the one with whom I have fun. You are my guiding light. You bring the hope into my life. I give you my heart and my soul. Because I had been part, you made me whole. And if you should ever go away, In my heart you will forever stay. And if 1 should ever go away, I hope that in your heart I will forever stay. In my heart you will forever stay.
