Freshmen, The peons of the high school. We wondered why there were green lockers on orange floor. We learned to ignore the “slip schedule” for lunches. We had no formal dance, no show, no cars, no reputation, and no respect. We learned to survive, and that is all. 1984 ... By our second year we were already being touted as the most spirited and talented class to come along in a while. As sophomores, we knew everything. And, in our efforts to climb the social ladder, we made sure we stepped on quite a few freshmen. (After all, what are freshmen for?) We visited Siam in our production of “The King and I.” Our gym teachers made us jump from high places and play soccer blindfolded. We danced to “Stairway to Heaven” amid blue balloons, amazed at how good we all looked dressed up. 1985 . . . We discovered we didn’t know everything. Those who were going to school to learn thought they would never survive the heavy courseload. Those who didn’t care about learning could now at least party with people who had cars. Always looking for a good time, our class outnumbered the seniors at the “Winter Wonderland” Cotillion. And, for the first time, we had a prom. We arrived at Jimmy’s Allenhurst anxious and dressed to the nines. We took home glasses printed with “We’ve Got Tonight,” our theme song. “The Sound of Music” was the all-school musical that year and in “Up the Down Staircase,” we got to act like high school 64 students and teachers — without the pressure. Mysteri- ously, our junior show never quite got off the ground. Maybe it was because some of us were already worrying about English class next year. 1986 and 1987 . . . Senior year at last . . . We pretended we knew everything with all confidence. Now the major force on most of the Athletic teams, we brought the Witches to two North Eastern Conference Champion- ships — in Girls’ soccer and in football. We also helped the baseball team to its first tourney game win ever. The Senior Carnival added even more money to our class’ healthy treasury and also gave a little experience to anyone who was considering joining the circus. We had a great time at the Cotillion and also at our Senior Prom at Danversport Yacht Club, with the “Supremes” perform- ing for us at the prom. Our class officers through our four years here: Jane Anderson, Julie Lambert, Scott Webster, Stephen O’Grady, Kathy Venetsanskos, Jamie Day and Deirdre McCarthy are probably some of the best this school has ever seen. And although probably each of us has had a few experiences during high school that we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemies, I think we can all say, we’ve come a long way since 8th grade. We move on in life, proud Witch alumni, searching for drier hallways and a library where we can have some quiet study. Kathy Tomsho Class Historian 65 66 J 67 VARSITY SOCCER The soccer team finished the season with a brilliant 15-2-1 record, the second best in the school’s his- tory. However, they were disappointed by a second place finish to an undefeated Marblehead team. The team was backboned by a strong defense that allowed a mere 11 goals. The defense, led by Seniors Joe Quartarone and Larry Giunta and by all-star co-captains Joe Gilligan and Scott Webster, established a school record of 11 shutouts. The offense scored a league high 60 goals due to the work of Senior Dean Borders and all-star co- captains Jeff Aucone and John Spvoletto. The team led by a strong group of ten seniors, finally captured the Northeastern Confer- ence Championship, and finally, finally beat those Headers. Overcoming some adversity among team members and many injurie? and illnesses, the team arrived at some shining moments in the season — such as defeating the Beverly Panthers 5 to 1. Assistant Coach Doreen Thibeault supplied the team with plenty of spree and incetive to “Get Ugly” while Head Coach Maihos endured mismatched socks, loud bus rides, frantic scrambles for hair ties and games of Red Light, Green Light. A team not necessarily endowed with the most talent in the Conference, The Salem High Girls proved themselves to be a team with spunk, class and perserverance. 70 Bottom row L-R Beth Maloon, Lauren Elsaessar, Laurie Beaulieu, Jen Paul, Bethann O’Leary — Capt., Sue Gaudette — Capt., Michelle White, Denise Censabella, Leann Morris, Jen Dowd. Running through the woods, chasing little kids, and returning young man’s wallet, the team made up of captain Deirdre McCarthy, ' newcomer Meghan Donoghue and veterans Deirdre Voss, Annalisa Oullette, and Denise Rhodes, showed a lot of improvement throughout the season. We may have only won 1 meet, but we won it big with the first 5 across the line. At the banquet, held at. Tiki Kai, McCarthy received the Hall of Fame MVP award and Meghan Donoghue received the Most Improved. The team was small but we had a great time anyway. Bottom row L-R Deirdre Voss, Capt. The 1986 season was another success, as we forged a 5-4 record against a tough schedule. The Clark brothers, Bobby and ! Freddy, (Continued their dominance of the North- , ' eastern Conference, rarely losing a match while amassing a staggering number of trophies and awards. Shayne Cokerdam and Chris Pizzello were solid no. 3 and no. 4 players. Shayne fought out health trouble and a wicked courseload on his way to four wins, while Chris quietly went undefeated after three frustrating ties. Dan Kinsella managed to avoid flying golf balls (for most of the year anyway) en route to a solid year at no. 7, and the irrepressible Eric Eddy was always on hand to demonstrate his unique method of reading greens, better known as the “Rolling Theory.” Seven underclassmen remain to take up the legacy under coach Bill Cullen’s assu- red leadership. All in all, a successful, competitive, and (most importantly) fun season. 76 MM Bottom row L-R Jeff Avigan, Shayne Cokerdem, Darren Eng. Other members were Chris Rovendro, Lori Maguire, Andrea Tomslro and j Zhristina McClure. The MIAA State Swimming and Div- ing Championship was held and was represented by Scott Feffer. On the whole, it was a pretty safe season. Be- sides some muscle pulls and cramps, there was nothing major, except: Scott Feffer decided to shave his legs for the All-Star meet and caused a “blood bath” in the locker room. TO THE CLASS OF 1987: If it were not for Kathy Mac’s dutiful typing of the names of players, for Evelyn and Georgia’s calm copying of my frenzied layouts, for Deirdre and my slav- ing over creative ways to arrange pictures, for Kelly and Kathy T’s sifting through piles of seniors and their quotes, and for Jen B. and Emily’s tearing their hair out over the endless class will, this book would never have been completed. These are only a few of the contributions each staff member made to this book. I am extremely grateful for their dedication and love. Also, Mrs. Gallo deserves more than a pat on the back for her dedication. She typed, filed, and soothed my fits of hysteria.
