The end of summer with its lazy days — the end of green; the beginning of autumn with its work-filled days — the beginning of red and bronze and gold. A season of warmth — renewing old friendships, searching for new. A season of acceptance — competing for victory, recognizing defeat. A season of seeking — developing new interests, relaxing in the familiar. A season of deci- sion — pursuing the future, living in the present. A time of confusion — losing our child- hood, gaining our adulthood. A season of truth — tolerating the inevitable, hoping for change. Nature ' s last fling — the vibrance of Fall rests in silence of winter white and pa- tiently waits for the rebirth of Spring. 106 107 The 1977 Salem Football Team en- joyed a very successful season. The Witches came within five points of re- turning to the Super Bowl. They com- piled a sparkling 8-2 record in one of the states ' toughest conferences. They led the Northeast Conference in both offense and defense. The offense scored 223 points while the defense only gave up 58 points. Coach Marcoulier crowned Chris Nangle Football Queen, a few pom-pom guys made their hilarious and spirited de- but, Karen Faulling even got to run through one of her own hoops, and we won the Thanksgiving Game the next day. The juniors were Christy De- Lorenzo, Linda Eon, Sue Lojko, Wendy McManus, and Ruth Millard. Along with the se- niors, our dedicated advisor and valued friend, Ms. Patricia Hynes also spent her last year with the squad. Cheerleaders are just like other people except that they choose to spend their Saturday afternoons, no mattter what the weather, bouncing around the sidelines of a football field, pulling never- before-used muscles, and yelling themselves hoarse, but we had a lot of fun and good times. 116 What has 240 feet and is always in step? The Salem High Marching Band! The band had 120 members, the largest ever at Salem High. This year under the di- rection of Richard Boisvert and Robson Shelly, the music making Witches enter- tained football fans each week during half- time. Although football season ended in No- vember, the band ' s activities continued with rallies, parades, and concerts. The band was lucky enough to go on another trip; this time to Bucks County, Pennsyl- vania for an exchange concert. 117 THE TWIRLING WITCHES PERFORMED This is the Baton Squad of 1977 to 1978. These beautiful girls spin their silver batons for every occasion. They perform their original routines at rallies, S.H.S. football games, band perfor- mances and parades. They are very carefully selected by judges in the spring, and practice throughout the summer and fall in order to present a prof essional performance every time. 118 DHL THROUGH ANOTHER SEASON Mary Jinks, Catie Camenga, Cheryl Medeiros, Diane King, co-captain Mary Richardson, co-captain Lil- lian Zatorre, Barbara Goodwin, Debbie Latnik, Beth Lynch, Denise Ywuc. 119 S.H.S. As the summer drew to a close in late Au- gust, the S.H.S. field hockey team began practice for the upcoming season. By the beginning of the school year, the three teams were selected and the season began. The varsity team was led by the returning veterans, MaryEllen Higgins, Alicia Jewett, and Darlene Censabella, who were also elected tri-captains. Although the team was young and inexperienced, Coach Sandy Provost did a fine job with the team, and they managed to do extremely well. The young team displays a lot of potential and looks great for next year. 120 1 Varsity Field Hockey Results Salem vs: Danvers 0-5 Gloucester 2-1 Marblehead 0-2 Lynn English 1-0 Saugus 0-1 Winthrop 0-2 Saugus 1-0 Marblehead 2-2 Lynn Classical 1-3 Danvers 0-2 English 4-1 Gloucester 2-2 Swampscott 0-1 Beverly 0-1 overall record: 4-8-2 conference record: 2-5-2 121 i S.H.S.
