Then it came — we awoke from a three year sleep to find we were “The Seniors”. Now it was my turn to sell that one dollar pool ticket to some unsuspecting freshman. The sports teams again did a great job in capturing championships in girls’ basketball, cross country and football as well as fairing ad- mirably in every other sport. Our seniors led Salem to the best combined sports record in the Northeast Conference this year. Then, what a shock! The new school was ready! As the doors clicked behind us for the last time, we thought about the many memories we were leaving behind. The first few days were hectic, but soon it was as if we had been here all along. Again the time came to flaunt our skills in the senior review. This time “Once Upon a Time” was our theme and with Mother Goose’s direction we went merrily on our way through childhood. It was late in the year and we were counting the days until the end. All of the sudden, english teachers were becoming extremely popular. Seniors looked happy — we were leaving. Teachers looked happy too — we were leaving! 14

‘ Junior year came with the thought of moving to a new school. Feelings on this were mixed, some for and some against the big move. This problem was decided by the construction company; we were to stay. The football team captured the hearts of all with a superb 10-0 season. Our hearts were broken after a 1 point loss to Andover in the Super Bowl. We knew in our hearts who the champs were. We put on the minstrel show to raise money for class functions and of course we showed all what a talented class we are. Based on the theme The Spirit of “76” and against a backdrop of tremendous scenery, we sang and partied ourselves into history as one of the best classes at S.H.S. Before the end of the year, however, our spirits were crushed as tradgedy struck our class. One of our own, Bobby Connell, passed away. With his death a great loss was felt. We closed off the year electing a new leader, Paul Francis, and keeping the other officers intact. 13

On may 28th at 2:18 p.m., the class of 1976 went into the history books as alumni of Salem Classical and Vocational High School. What a four years it was! As I look back I see a vision of the statue of Teddy Roosevelt saying “I hope you had a pleasant stay!”. 15
