Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb, education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts, persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” william f. mckinnon my sincere best wishes to the members of the class of 1 973. your graduation represents the first major step along the road of life, many challenges lie ahead, your years at salem high school have given you a solid foundation on which to build your future lives, make the most of your opportunities so that each of you con- tribute in some way toward making the world a better place in which to live. edward a. curtin to the class of ' 73 my most hearty congratulations and most sincere wish for success and happiness in the years to come. joseph a. zagrobski 185 mr. mark ankeles miss susan banks mr. henry baldassari mr. robert bailey mrs. charlene bailey mrs. therefore, you, the educated, should ask yourselves this question: what did you learn in high school? this consideration sh juld form the focal point of any high school class history, and it is. chronologically speaking, freshman year must be considered first, ‘‘in the beginning . . . was the first day of school, you probably learned a lot that day, such as your sc hedule, the name of the fellow sufferer next to you in homeroom, the location of the gym, and many other equally fascinating tidbits, most of which were forgotten by the second day of school, but, somewhere, somehow, you learned to cope, that year, many old attitudes were revamped along with the dress code, there were strikes, moratoriums, brawls, leaflets, peti- tions, an underground newspaper, black armbands, and still more leaflets, for the more conventional, there was an excursion to a red sox game, at which the hometeam emerged victorious, every freshman realized by the end of that year that he would be glad when no longer a freshman. having managed to survive the first year, you were graciously allowed to proceed with your education; you became a sophomore, one of the first things you learned that year was that although sophomores were not among the privileged, they were much better off than the freshmen, you also learned how capable people are of maturing a good deal in one summer, that was quite a summer for some of you. despite the usual trials and tribulations, it was a fairly decent year, those who attended the sophomore skating party that year learned that planning a skating party is no guarantee of ice. since everyone seems to have his or her own cherished memories about this year, reminisce on a personal, amusing, recol- lection. now laugh; that is the manner in which you should recall your second year of high school. at this point, you’ve traveled halfway down the memory lane of your high school days, upon reflection, the latter two years did seem an improvement over the former years. with this thought uppermost, let the history continue, at junior year, that was the election year, there were two; one in the fall and a spring re-run. it was the elections which revealed the true eloquence, creativity, imagination, and style of the candidates and their campaign workers, the junior minstrel show proved another showcase for true talent, alright, agreed, there are many talented, versatile people in the class of ' 73, and the show was a memorable, enjoyable experience on or off stage, as for the other class activities, those who attended the cotillion learned that the function room at the hawthorne hotel was not large enough for the number present, if you were present at the junior prom, you were reminded that “we ' ve only just begun, very appropriately, for it did seem at times . . . but this is a digression back to the past, some students, who have tried to remain anonymous, learned a great deal concerning fires, smoke bombs, bomb- scares, and provided non-stop entertainment for the team of evaluators who came to salem for a few days, despite their less than elegant reception they did not shut down salem high school — it remained open to usher the inmates through one more year. you probably doubted that it would ever come, but it arrived at last — senior year, the beginning of the end. if you learned anything that year, you were one of the fortunate, for learning was made difficult to impossible — academically speaking, of course, outside of the curriculum, learning flourished as never before, that year also marked the official end of the longest war in the country’s history, that same year also saw the passage of certain leg- islation which legalized the consumption of alcohol for eighteen year olds and greatly facili- tated that activity for those “under age. despite dire predictions, you certainly did not all become alcoholics; however, there were some definite changes in the social life in salem. now to return to authorized activities, first came the cotillion, where the problem of crowding was alleviated by limiting the number of tickets available, not very many students attended, but of those who did, most enjoyed themselves, many students learned the prob- lems involved in the production of a show; specifically, the senior review which with a little imagination transported the audience back through time, where they saw a new view of just how good “the good old days were, the long awaited bahamas excursion was actually more like a well deserved vacation after the exciting court room style meetings which were held before and after the trip, where it was decided that the travel club would sue the travel agency, and where all present learned a lot about business practices, you also learned much about city government by the discovery of an enemy to the entire body among the members of the school committee, who received much less-than-favorable publicity after issuing blanket statements about “students running wild in the halls,” and more equally absurd trash. as those four years of secondary school finally drew to a close, there came a flurry of activity with the banquet, graduation, and the reception practically flowing into each other, despite the tears shed, these last few days were long anticipated, thoroughly enjoyed, and will be forever remembered as “the good time.” everyone of you experienced that one moment at graduation when the reality of the ceremony finally hit you, the instant when past and future were on either side of you, with no room to move and you were temporarily suspended in time with the unknown future” lying but a few moments away. thus endeth the class of ' 73. what have you learned? this each of you must now answer privately, as you were all formally educated and, well, let it suffice to name this education process that of independent study, one last thought — recall your favorite memory from your high school years, now consider it a moment, for that is the true measure of whether or not those four years were worthwhile. 205 senior directory kevin anfos paul beaupre steve bloom 7 isle ve. 57 sumner rd. 27 gallows hill rd. joe orchambault donna beausoleil joan bochynski ;
