I eternal — intangible — preeious i youth idealistic — discontent — precious awareness perceptive ness — broad-minded — precious I hope awareness — youth — time 9 EDITORIAL “When I was a child I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away chil dish things.” 1 Corinthians 13:11-13 How difficult it is to relinquish the carefree ways of youth, and assume the responsibilities of adulthood. As a child’s first steps are often unsure, so are our first ventures into the adult world. We are eager for new experiences, challenges, and achievements; yet, are we ready to tuck away our youthful irresponsibility? The era in which we live has an atmosphere of constant change. As the growing child discards toys and games, so does youth reject the ideas of adults. Time proceeds, and no segment of the population can impede progress. What we reject today as absurd and ridiculous will probably be an accepted part of our life in later years. Since we are no longer children, we must now try to assume the responsibilities of society. As we seek success in our diverse fields we shall discover it also will come in varied guises. For some individuals wealth will measure success; others will attain power or prestige. Perhaps, our success will be the personal satisfaction derived from knowing that we have found our identity and place in a complicated society. Hopefully, success will be the attainment of happiness. This quest is the challenge of youth. As part of a perceptive generation, the Class of ’68 must now accept life’s challenges. Youth contains hope for the future; awareness is the hope for youth. Mary Ellen Conlon Editor-in-Chief DEDICATION T 0 Mr. Josep h Murp hy, whom we have known as a teacher, a vice-principal, an ad- visor of our yearbook, and most- ly as a man. You have met most of our class at one time or an- other whether for congratula- tions or for disciplinary mea- sures. Still, you have met us and guided us along. We the Class of 1968 dedicate our yearbook to you with special thanks for your always being there at the times you were needed most. 12 frequently the last time comes - and we do not know.” Mike was a quiet, yet impressive figure, whose gentle ways and sense of humor endeared him to many. He had the wondrous gift of always looking at the bright side of things, and we grieve the loss of our class- mate. Moreover, those of us who have known Mike know that it is not years that measure a man’s worth, but deeds that have no barrier of time. FOREWORD The time has come, ” the walrus said. To talk of many things — ” This is the time for you to be extremely aware of your role in society. It is time to speak of ideal- ism, responsibility, and leadership. At no other time has youth displayed this new breed of aware- ness; it is a trait to be nurtured and cultivated. This yearbook is the expression and the memory of the class of 1968 for all time. Knowing you will now accept all of lifeTs challenges, let it serve as a marker of your young ideals, your involve- ment, and your generation. The Yearbook Staff wishes to take this oppor- tunity to thank all of the people responsible for the production of the 68 Witch. We give special thanks to our advisors Mr. Joseph Murphy, Mrs. Madaline Nolan, and Mr. Alfred Pasquale for their patience, guidance, suggestions, and the lib- erty they extended to us so that we the staff could establish a yearbook we feel will be remembered and cherished by every member of the Class of 1968. Yearbook Staff “At last!” these are the words that can be heard from every student who has helped to produce the ’68 Witch. We worked continuously to find new ideas that could make our yearbook a book about the work and the fun at high school, but mostly about you. One may label a dance, a trip, or an award as an experience or a memory. I’m sure that one’s stay at Salem High will always be remembered as a chain of experiences all subdivided into four illustri- ous years. On a clear, cool, September morning in 1964, almost 500 timid freshmen walked into the mighty corridors of Salem High. They never realized the joys, sorrows, disappointments, and experiences they would share together as the Class of 1968. Freshmen year was typical. There were tons of homework, adjustments to be made to high school life, and the Freshman Frolic with our jazz dancers, magician, and singers, as well as puppy love. When sophomore year arrived, everybody felt as if he was a part of Salem High and life-long friendships began to bloom. We pro- gressed a bit in social life which was proven by our successful Sophomore Shindig, as well as the spirit that was shown at our color day rally. At the end of this year, we all felt as if we had the most difficult years under our belts, and we were now ready to become those mighty upperclassmen. Junior year began with a bang. Class elections were held, and we finally recognized the names of the nominees that were splashed all over the cafeteria walls. It was soon realized how many willing and cooperative people were members of the class and it seemed shameful that only four people could win. The officers elected were Tom Lawnsby, president; Janice Macheras, vice-president; Carol Cook, Secretary; and Theresa Chouinard, treasurer. Our officers coordinated a splash party which proved to a success and will long be remembered. We stood out as the only junior class to ever have such an affair. Our color day rally this year showed that we were becoming more impor- tant. Our skit was better, our voices louder, and our smiles much wider. “Somewhere My Love” was the song being hummed by all of the junior girls for the rest of the year, because this was the theme of our junior prom. It was held at the Thomson Club in No. Reading, and Christine Valaskatgis headed the lovely court as queen. The night and its preparations were memorable, and the junior year was ended. September 6, 1967 marked the date when we finally became seniors. Immediately everyone talked about the revue, graduation, and all that would occur this year. Actually more did occur than usual. In addition to one class trip to Washington D.C., another trip to Europe was planned. For forty seniors this was a dream that ended all too soon. Election time this year only brought about one change. This year the class of 1968 would be headed by Jon Skerry who was elected as president. The football season was fabulous. Remember Nelle The Belle of S.H.S., when Don Stokes won the Corvette for the weekend, and mostly how we slaughtered Beverly High School with a score of 67-28? Remember the great “flood vacation” and how everybody relaxed that whole week? Remember May 24 and 25 — The Sweet Machine, with Mama Moe, Alphonse, “Get them!”. Purity Smith, and mostly the Sweet Machine? Remember the Senior Ban- quet when several of the boys wore bermudas, our farewell song to Mr. Robinson and the laughter and tears of that night? Before we knew it June 17 was here. It ' s all so familiar: our school, our classmates, our Graduation Day. Remember Jon Skerry saying “wistwatch?” Remember the Senior Reception, and the glowing faces even through the rainy weather? Remember how beautiful Cheryl Homan looked as queen? Remember . . . remember . . . remember . . .. Whether they were good times, bad times, sad times, or happy times, they were all worth remembering and I’m sure they will be remembered by all of us in the years to come.
