♦fH The Doorway As each passes through the way, Let him think what these doors have held; Let him see the work as it lies behind And judge if he did it well; Let his hear the words of teaching, As they echo through the halls; Let him stand upon the threshold — Let him feel proud, secure, and tall. Maria Kondon Class of 1967 I 2 Mr. Stanley Robinson Principal S.H.S. Dedication To Stanley M. Robinson, we, the Class of 1967, say thank you . Thank you for your time, your effort your help, your friendliness, and your genuine interest. To you, we dedicate our yearbook. May it symbolize our gratitude and respect. May it serve as an inspiration, showing you our spirit and our hopes. May it represent the beginning of many fulfilling years at Salem Classical and High School. May it make you happy. 3 Table of Contents Seniors Sports Activities Organization Graduation Foreword To the Class of 1967, a message — Happiness is the only good. The time to be happy is now. The place to be happy is here. The way to be happy is to make others so.” To e veryone, thank you — Yearbook staff, thank you for your hard work and never-ending enthusiasm. Mrs. Madaline Nolan, Mr. Alfred Pasquale, Mr. Joseph Murphy, our advisors, special heartfelt thanks for your invaluable assistance and encouragement. Without you, the 1967 Witch would not have been possible. Members of the Class of 1967, thank you for being you. So that you may remember our four, long wonderful, hard, fun-filled, important years together at Salem High School, we present to you the 1967 Witch, our yearbook. It is a book of living and learning. It is a book of friendships. It is a book of memories which will serve to make timeless our experiences at Salem High School. It is a book for you. Mr. Paul Porochniak We record with deep sorrow the passing of Mr. Paul Porochniak, a man of strength and sensitivity. We appreciate the years of sincere and invaluable work with which he has helped to build our school. We admire the devotion with which he has guided many, and we find ourselves indebted to his superior character. Mr. Porochniak has been a friend and a gift to all — the school, the pupils, and humanity. The mark he has left at Salem High School we recognize as a light by which each of us may be guided. 8 Editorial Age, out of heart, impatient sighed: — ' I ask what will the Future be?’ Youth laughed contentedly, and cried: — ' The future leave to me!’ ” — At this moment, to some of us the future may be vague, to others it may be sure. Nevertheless, we all have in ourselves the inherent quality of hope, for while older men dream dreams, younger men see visions. Whichever visions each of us may see, we shall strive for satisfaction. After all, satisfaction is the greatest ambition. We are on the threshold of a new experience, ready to begin our world as adults. We are in this world at a time when we can do what no one has ever done before. That is what education means — to be able to do what one has never done before. Our education has helped prepare us to face this challenge; it has developed our individual personalities and the significance of our lives to ourselves and to others. We now realize that success is measured not only by material things, but also by personal satisfaction. We look back to all our warm memories at Salem High School. We remem- ber the difficult times as not being so difficult, and the happy times as being happier. We remember the aid and guidance of our teachers and parents. They have given us their love and encouragement and example. We will never forget the joys, the laughter, the unity, the pride . . . this is the class of 1967. Claire Dansreau Editor-in-Chief 9 Your Administrators Mr. Stanley Robinson Principal Salem Classical and High School Congratulations to the Class of 1967 You have reached a major milestone in your lives by earning a Salem High School diploma. You have persevered and been successful. Though your progress may not always go smoothly for- ward you will never lose the credit symbolized by your graduation. You will always have the memories so well depicted throughout this 1967 yearbook. The Class of 1967 can never lose its place with me — it is number one ! The sharing of one brief year together does not diminish the special place I will reserve for a class that has been so loyal, co-operative, and, above all, friend- ly- Stanley Robinson Mr. Joseph E. Murphy Vice Principal One stage of your life has come to an end and your adult life is in the immediate offing. Your priceless high school days will not be fully appre- ciated until you have lived a few years in the world of grownups”. We at Salem High School hope that we have helped to develop your latent ability to cope with the hard world of reality. Remember that your diploma will open many otherwise unattainable opportunities for you, but after the initial opening you must con- tinue to work and work. Good luck to all and may God bless all of you all of your lives. Joseph E. Murphy 10 MR. JOHN M. CONWAY Principal Vocational High School Sincere congratulations to the Class of 1967. Despotopoulos Class History If you have ever tried to remember a certain some time, you know that it is difficult. You cannot relive past moments. You cannot remember so much that has happened. But, you can try. You will find that you remember with a feeling . . . And how do you remember four years? So much was done, so much was hoped for ... so much . . . I remember one September morning in 1963. The day was rainy and cool. The building was large and strange. The people were new and many. The people formed our class, the class of 1967. The building was Salem High School, and the day was our first together as a class. This day was a beginning, a beginning to four years . . . Our first year, we were Itty-Bitty Freshmen”. We were still young, small, shy, with a lot of livin’ and a lot of learnin’ to do”. We held our first school social event — the Freshman Frolic with music by Manuel’s Black and Whites. That night and that year, strange faces became shy acquaintances and soon, everlasting friends. As sophomores, we have become accustomed to the school, to the work, to the fun, to the people. The Sophomore Shindig proved to be a great time for all who attended. The year was another lap in our journey and another chapter in our book of memories. And then, so soon, wewere upperclassmen. We were juniors, and we realized that it was later than we thought. It was time to seriously consider the future. But, it was also time to make our class the greatest ! We held elections, and under the leader- ship of Peter Gibson, John Walsh, Debbie Clay, and Susan Staniewicz, we succeeded. We almost won the trophy from the seniors as Color Day, and soon, at the New Ocean House, we held the Junior Prom, Moonlight and Magic”. Queen Carolyn LeBlanc and her court added to the magic. It was a beautiful night ... It was a very good year . . . But the best was yet to come. They now called us the Mighty, Mighty Seniors , and we were thrilled. Election time, this year, brought these results: John Walsh, president; John Stanchfield, vice-president; Debbie Clay, secretary; and Susan Stanie- wicz, treasurer. Along with the officers, the Executive Board and the Class made this year the climax of our four years together. Remember Dink-Donk School, Konoval- chex, and the deflating chest — we won the trophy at Color Day! Remember galloping horses and a cabin in the woods — this was Christmas vacation and our sleigh ride. Re- member a fabulous night at the Y” — this was our Splash Party. Remember the teachers playing basketball at Peabody High — it was fantastic! Remember a long bus ride, a boat trip along the Potomac, and Rands — this was the class trip to Washington D. C. Remember Bermuda Day — it was a change of pace” and a financial boost for the class. Remember Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27- — with the pregnant lady on the subway; our wonder-girl”, Donna O’Brien; Russell Dowd’s cheese danish; and Dr. Kitchell and the Midas Touch”. Remember Bells are Ringing” as our show”, because it was. Remember Senior Week — the Splash Party and the Bermuda Hop, and then, the Senior Banquet with the tears and laughter that come with memories . . . And how do you remember four years? So much was done, so much was hoped for ... so much . . . I remember one June evening in 1967. It was June 9. The day was warm and bright and clear. The place was so familiar. The people were still many, but certainly, no longer strangers. This was our school, our class — our Graduation Day. Remember that night always, and be proud. Soon, we made more memories. Remember our Senior Reception on June 14 at the Rolling Green Motor Inn in North Andover. Our Queen. Sharon O’Brien, and her court helped complete an elegant night. Thus, ended our Senior year. And now, we have an end to our beginning, an end to our four years, and an end to a segment of our lives . . . Try to remember. You will find that you remember with a feeling. And how do you remember four years? You cannot relive past moments, but it is great to try! IQ M fc v i Advance Staff First Row: L. Hudson, D. Knochenhauer, L. Beauvais, N. Femino, M. Kondon, N. The various activities of the Junior Class for this year were both numerous and exciting. It was the first junior class to ever have a splash party, and one where a considerable amount of profit was made. On the agenda also were a cake sale in April and the Prom in May, held at the Thompson Club in North Reading.
