It was our privilege to have our graduation Mr. Arnold’s graduation also. The principal’s job brings with it certain requirements and responsibil- ities. We consider ourselves fortunate indeed to have been blessed with the guidance of a man as sincere and understanding as Mr. Chester Arnold. His continuing devotion to his students during their high school years has given them the inspiration needed for the future. Mr. Arnold’s interest in his students’ well-being and development has increased with the years. It began during his career as English teacher at Salem High and continued to grow as the principal of Phillips Grammar School. Upon his appointment to the position of principal of Salem Classical and High School, Mr. Arnold had reached a deep understanding of the joys and fears, the hopes and needs of Salem’s youth. For all this we a re most grateful, but we want to extend a special thanks to Mr. Arnold for what we, as graduates of Salem High School, consider most important. Amidst the present turmoil of American youth, Salem High, under Mr. Arnold, has remained true to its ideals the formation of strong character and good citizenship. As small payment for our debt of gratitude, we, the class of 1966, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Chester Arnold. You of the great class of 1966 made remarkable records at Salem High both in your studies and in your extracurricular activities. You also came to understand and achieve strong loyalties to your school and to your class. As your graduation speakers pointed out, there is no security in this world except that of your own strength. Build on your personal integrity and on loyalties intelligently arrived at; then in your lives you will realize the promise of your high schobl years. My warmest wishes for your happiness and success; and a special “Thank you!” to all the Class of 1966. Through your kindness and cooperation you made this year a very special one for me. Chester R. Arnold — Principal 7 Administrators Mr. Joseph E. Murphy — Vice Principal During your years at Salem High School we have endeavored to bring forth your innate qualities in order to enable you to fight your way through life. God Bless you — and may your efforts and our efforts combine to form a suc- cessful and happy life. MR. JOHN CONWAY, Principal of Salem Vocational School Congratulations to the Class of 1966. May your hopes and ambitions for the future be fully realized. May you become responsible, worthwhile citizens of your community and nation. Have an awareness that serious problems exist. Have the pru- dence, wisdom, and fortitude to solve them. Best wishes to all. DR. LAWRENCE J. FITZPATRICK Superintendent of Schools The importance of adequate academic facilities can hardly be over-estimated. Thus to Dr. Fitzpatrick we are grateful for his generous and fore-sighted view of our needs, both present and future. MR. PHILIP BROWN Director of Guidance My sincere congratulations to the Class of 1966. We shall always remember that your record has made Mr. Arnold’s final year with us a memorable one. Senator Kennedy’s visit was one of the highlights of the year. “good bye” Class History Well we have finally made it — alumni of Salem High. Looking hack, now, it seems we began just four weeks ago instead of four years ago. It all started hack in September of 1962 with the first gathering of the class of 66; our Freshman Frolic which consisted of a Talent Show and a Square Dance. What better way to get to know your classmates? Our Sophomore year, finding rooms that were well hidden was old hat and high school life was beginning to agree with us. The two major events of that year were first. The Sophomore Shindig “A Trip Around the World” with music provided by Teddy Capelous and his orchestra, which proved to be a great time for all who attended, and second, the choosing of the five cheerleaders, who were to last for the next two years. The judges had a hard time selecting the five as all who tried out were good but they finally decided on these five: Linda D’Entremont, Kris Kasprowicz, Jeanne McKay, Judy Parent, and Head Cheerleader Ann Tivnan. We entered our Junior year with a bang by selecting four competent people as class officers: Arthur “Bogie” Neuner, President; Conrad Johns, Vice-President; Theresa Curtin, Secretary; Nancy Hodge, Treasurer. These four, along with the Executive Board, succeeded in having the traditional Salem High class ring changed to a cut stone, which the majority of the class wanted. On May 21, the class held our Junior Prom “Some Enchanted Evening” at the New Ocean House in Swampscott. Queen Andrea James was crowned by “Bogie” at the stroke of twelve, to the music of Lou Marino and his Orchestra. Thus ended our Junior year. We began our Senior year by electing four of the most capable people into the positions of class officers — President, once more Arthur “Bogie” Neuner, Nancy Witham; Vice-President, Sandra Ruscio, Secretary; Joanne L’ltalien; Treasurer. After beating undefeated Peabody in the greatest foot- ball game of the year, we, the Seniors, went on to “take” the color day Trophy from the Juniors. The traditional Senior Semi-Formal was held in February as “The Sweetheart Dance” Queen, Nancy Hodge, was crowned by “Bogie” in a beautifully decorated gym. After reading the Class History, fill in the empty spaces with your own memories and it will prove to be the greatest four years of your life. Under the direction of Miss Marie Phelan, and this year’s president, John Yeannakipoulos, the club has been very successful. The meetings of this club consist of discussing various aspects and opportunities of teaching and of having guest speakers, who in cost cases pass on to the merrtbers vital informa- tion on the teaching career.
