Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1962 volume:

REST Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Rest is not quitting The busy career; Rest is the fitting Of self to one’s sphere. ’Tis the brook’s motion Clean without strife; Fleeting to ocean, After its life. ’Tis loving and serving The highest and best ; ’Tis onward, unswerving And this is true rest. 1 EDITORIAL In Memoriam This past year the entire school has been saddened by the death of three close friends: Miss Ida Blossom. Miss Catherine Pratt and Mr. Jack Ginsburg. Miss Blossom had retired last year after forty-three years of service in the Commercial Department. Miss Catherine Pratt will long be remembered by the many boys who attended the Vocational School where she was secretary. This year’s graduates, together with many before them, will not forget Mr. Jack Ginsburg, class photographer and benefactor who initiated the Phyllis Ginsburg Yavner Memorial Scholarship Fund. f I . ' . ‘Just as the twig is bent, the tree’s inclined:’ During the last four years at Salem High School, we have experienced much. All of us have studied the subjects ' that were so ably presented in our Commercial, Vocational, Shop, and College Preparatory Courses, Memorable social events have been shared. These proms, sport rallies, and club activities have determined our conduct with others. At some time, we ambitiously decided upon our goals and our career. These past years were a time of growth — the ex- pansion of our education with books and with people. We are most fortunate that this developmental period was spent at Salem High School under the guidance of the faculty and in association with the members of the class of 1962. Our teachers have instructed us and we have learned from our friends. Now. we are almost adults. These so important four years have bent the twig to form a straight and stalwart tree with roots of truth, courage, and wisdom. The world awaits us, but we are not afraid. Mr. Peter Carbone — Superintendent We. the class of 1962, pay special tribute to Mr. Peter F. Carbone by dedicating to him this edition of the “Witch.” For sixteen years Mr. Carbone had served as Superintendent of Schools in Salem. Prior to that, he had taught at Salem High School and later served as vice-principal from 1910-1943. Mr. Carbone is an honest and sincere public official, who has striven for the im- provement of Salem’s Schools. All of us have benefited from his excellent and loyal service. To him we owe a debt of gratitude, for he is truly an outstanding citizen. MR. CHESTER ARNOLD Principal — High School My sincere congratulations to the class of 1962. You have established during your four years at Salem High School an excellent record of achievement and cooperation. Your teachers have tried to develop in you wisdom as well as knowledge. It is by wisdom that you will gain courage, humility, and dis- criminatory power. May you continue to grow in wisdom so that your careers will enrich your own lives and the lives of those around you. CHESTER R. ARNOLD, Principal MR. PHILIP BROWN Guidance — High School My sincere congratulations to you, the members of the Class of 1962. You have shown during your years at Salem High School that you have been endowed with many God-given gifts: ability, integrity, loyalty, charity, courage, and faith in the future. Make the most of these attributes and you will go far in contributing to the welfare of your family, your community and your country. Philip J. Brown Guidance Director, Salem High MR. JOHN M. CONWAY Principal — Vocational Congratulations to the Class of 1962. May reflection on this historic year of the United States’ astronautical successes inspire each of you to attain greater goals. At the end of the season, the boys tallied three wins, five defeats and one tie. Many of the contests are unforgettable, as that heartbreaking loss by two points to Haverhill. The team was ably led by the tri-captains, James Collins, David Donovan, and Michael Kompa. The boys practiced long hours and each one performed his best in every game. Captains Bob Budzinski and Mike Gromko played exceptionally well and both received All- Scholastic citations from newspapers. Mike Fischer TRACK The Salem High School track team has three different seasons of racing. In the fall the boys race the Cross Country, which is about a two and one- half mile track. In the winter there is indoor track with various events as the high jump, the hurdles, the shot-put, relays, and from 50 yards to a mile races. With the spring, arrives outdoor track, which encompasses much the same as the indoor. In the Cross Country, this year’s team won the Middlesex County Pil- grim Division Championship. The track team beat Beverly for a second in the Indoor North Shore Track League, and the boys placed third in the Outdoor Essex County League. R L N E S A Q D u E A R D 103 - ' W The Red Gross Council RED CROSS COUNCIL Throughout its years of existence, the Student Council of Salem High School has proven to be a most active and beneficial organization. The pur- pose of the council is threefold — to create a better understanding between pupils and faculty, to promote school spirit, and to improve the school. Nineteen sixty-two has been an exceptionally successful year, under the leadership of the President, Dorothy Sobocinski, Vice President. Robert Ray- mond, Treasurer, Ann Guerrerio. Re- cording Secretary, Jane Amsler, and Corresponding Secretary. Patricia Gra- bowski. The Council was divided into committees — cafeteria, fund-raising, as- sembly, and academic. One of the most popular activities of the Council was the Spelling Bee. which created interest and improved the school’s spelling. The Council also sponsored a Sports’ Night to honor all of the enthusiastic participants in S.H.S. sport programs and an assembly fea- turing Mr. Sharpe, the blind pianist. All of the ' Council members are most grateful to Mr. Grady, the ad- visor who was so interested in, and so willing to work for, the Student Council and its activities of this past school year. The purpose of the Red Cross Council at Salem High School is to give aid to people in need, in the forms of money, clothing or personal help. This year the Red Cross. ‘ advised by Mrs. Marion Swee- ney. held Christmas parties for crippled and sick children, assisted on blood donor days, and canvassed for the United Fund. Two delegates will be sent to the Eastern Area Conference for training as officers. Upon their return to school next year, they will help fill in the offices vacated by out going President. Kristin Jellison. and Vice Pres- ident Mary M. Tivnan. STUDENT COUNCIL — — — SAFETY PATROL Silting: T. Pizzo, J. Meaney. Miss Annable is aided in her task by the members of the Library Corps, who gain knowledge of the books available and the system employed in the library. The organization, composed of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, was headed this year by Jane Amsler, President; David Levy, Vice President; Barbara Bolt, Secretary; Patricia Raymond, Treasurer. During the past year, the corps wrote and produced an interesting Book Quiz Assembly for the school. A Book Fair, at which paperback books were displayed and sold to the entire school, was another most successful project. The corps also held a Tea for parents and a bus trip to a Boston Book Fair. Once again this year the Advance earned first place in the annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association competition, and it re- ceived the Highest Achievement Award at. Boston University School of Journalism. The 1962 Advance had for its co-editors Suellen Carroll and Abby Solomon, with the associate editors, Jane Amsler and Elizabeth Needleman, and was under the guidance of its advisor, Mr. Don- ald Murphy. The Advance is now primarily a literary-art publication and con- tains material of merit and of interest to the entire student body. The pupils of Salem High School have the opportunity of reading and enjoying the Advance, as well as the opportunity to develop their own literary and artistic skills. The marching band has provided us with excellent music at football games, rallies, and parades, while the concert band with the usual good instrumenta- tion, performed at graduation. The orchestra played for numer- ous assemblies and for the Senior Revue. The Concert Band spent three days in East Providence and was later host to the East Providence High Band in May. The Band and Orchestra Council is an important policy- making branch of the musical organization. It is composed of representatives from each class, who help Mr. Boisvert and Ed- ward Fallon, drum major, to run the orchestra and the band.
