Editorial Yesterday, we were but children, living in a child’s world — a carefree, gay land, in wh ich we were loved, protected, and encouraged by adoring elders. It was a wonderland without worry or sorrow; but, when, on occasion, we briefly glimpsed the busy stream of adult life which ebbed around us, we became curious and pensive. We knew that the day would come when we must take our place in that society. However, since a child s attention is not held for long, we soon had returned to the untroubled world of our own with all apprehensions gone. But, that was yesterday. Today, we are taking a large and permanent step into the world of men. We are shedding the restrictions and the shelter of our wonderland and taking up the responsibilities and privileges of adulthood. We do this not without sorrow, for never again shall we be so totally free of responsibility. Thus, we are fear- ful of a world we have sometimes heard described so bitterly. However, there is much joy mixed with the sadness — the joy found in the anticipation of the privileges and independence we are coming to receive. There is pride in being deemed worthy of citizenship in so demanding a world. Above all, there is hope and confidence. So many opportunities are waiting! We are starting afresh in a land where equality is not only avowed, but practiced. Sadness, fear, joy, pride, hope — a strange combination of feelings to be experiencing at one time. But, that is not all — there is one more which is of great importance — gratitude. We have so much to be grateful for! The love and patience our parents have given us, and the learning and guidance our teachers have offered us. We have benefited from our years at Salem High School in many ways. We have studied in its classrooms, made friends and learned to work with others in its extracurricular activities. We have developed mentally, and spiritually under the guidance of its faculty. Their influence has left an indelible mark on our personalities for which we are sincerely appreciative. We shall remember our childhood, our high school years, fondly, as we look back on them; but right now, we are looking excitedly ahead to a bright and shiny future. Virginia O’Brine Co-.Editor

Jn JAenioriam In the scurry of our senior year, we, the Class of 1959, have searched in vain for one face, long familiar to Salem High and its students. Mr. Joseph Lyons, a member of the English Department for many years, passed away on July 14, 1958. Salem High School has lost a valued teacher. Its students have lost a beloved friend. Mr. Lyons was a native of Salem where he attended school. After studying for two years at Epiphany College in Baltimore, he attended Boston College from which he received his degree in 1927. A resident of Beverly Farms, prior to his death, he is survived by a wife and two children. In 1929, Mr. Lyons joined the faculty at Salem High where he taught for twenty-nine years. His students recall Mr. Lyons as a cheerful man with a wonderful and ready smile and a sparkling wit. Although a busy person, he was never too preoccupied to aid a pupil in difficulty. He knew his subject well and transmitted his love for it to each one of his students. Mr. Lyons will always be remembered by us with fondness, respect and ad- miration. He was loved by all as a great teacher and a good friend. As a token of our esteem, the Class of 1959, a part of his very large family at Salem High School, is honored to dedicate this, our Yearbook, to the memory of the late Joseph Lyons. 5
