Our superintendent of schools is someone we have been familiar with ever since our grammar school days, but his importance to us has increased with each passing year. Mr. Carbone is the so- called “man behind the scenes.” He has a difficult and demanding job; but, busy as he is, he has man- aged to keep in touch with us and to keep up with our projects. He has done everything possible to insure the excellence of our educational facilities. Mr. Carbone is a man we shall remember as in- valuable to our high school success. Mr. Conway is a man familiar to all of us, but especially to the senior boys under his supervision to whom he acts as teacher, counselor, and friend. Mr. Conway is the director of the Salem Vocational High School. He has been admired by all for his sincerity and affability; however, he will be remem- bered by “his boys” for his profound influence upon them. 6

Jn JAenioriam In the scurry of our senior year, we, the Class of 1959, have searched in vain for one face, long familiar to Salem High and its students. Mr. Joseph Lyons, a member of the English Department for many years, passed away on July 14, 1958. Salem High School has lost a valued teacher. Its students have lost a beloved friend. Mr. Lyons was a native of Salem where he attended school. After studying for two years at Epiphany College in Baltimore, he attended Boston College from which he received his degree in 1927. A resident of Beverly Farms, prior to his death, he is survived by a wife and two children. In 1929, Mr. Lyons joined the faculty at Salem High where he taught for twenty-nine years. His students recall Mr. Lyons as a cheerful man with a wonderful and ready smile and a sparkling wit. Although a busy person, he was never too preoccupied to aid a pupil in difficulty. He knew his subject well and transmitted his love for it to each one of his students. Mr. Lyons will always be remembered by us with fondness, respect and ad- miration. He was loved by all as a great teacher and a good friend. As a token of our esteem, the Class of 1959, a part of his very large family at Salem High School, is honored to dedicate this, our Yearbook, to the memory of the late Joseph Lyons. 5

Our principal has certainly been the key figure in our high school career. He has striven constantly throughout these past years to make high school as profitable as possible for each of us. In his busy schedule, he has found time to keep personally in contact with every one of his students. Not only our scholastic records have been under his observing eye, but the records of our extracurricular activity as well. His goal has been always the development of the youngsters who come under his supervision into well-balanced, intelligent adults. Mr. Arnold has worked and continues to work hard to give Salem High its present standard to excellence. We are deeply grateful to Mr. Arnold for his tireless efforts in our behalf. In the years to come one of our most pleasant memories of Salem High will surely be Mr. Tivnan’s cheerful smile and friendly manner. Of course, there are occasions when he, as the school’s disciplinarian, must be less friendly and more firm; but, even dur- ing those most trying times, we have found him understanding and kind. He is always willing to listen to our troubles and to help us out in any way possible. He has given his time freely and gladly to our class activities. Mr. Tivnan’s sympathetic kindness, as well as his firm discipline, has surely helped each of us to be- come better citizens. Our admiration and respect for him will remain with us for many years. 7
