SALEM HIGH SCHOOL I.M.Q, WILLSON STREET Salem, ma , 01970 OUR PARENTS AND TEACHERS It is the purpose of this type of a literary dedication to express a sincere gratitude to someone who has contributed most signif- icantly to the education, development, or achievements of any class. No individual or group has done more for our preparation to enter this modern, troubled world than these— our parents and our teachers. The right of existence, the devotion and care, the encourage- ment and assistance, the sacrifices and aspirations— for these price- less gifts from our parents, we are eternally indebted. For their tireless efforts, their wisdom and guidance, their deep dedication and inspiring example, we are equally grateful to the faculty of Salem High. To our parents and to our teachers we dedicate this humble effort-the 1958 WITCH. PEPlCAW r THE GOLDEN YEARS Four years at Salem High have just ended. Another chapter in the fas- cinating book of life has concluded, transforming children into informed and able young adults. From this steppingstone of high school, we are now ready to enter into the world and make our mark. We are ready for this adventure. Salem High has given us the priceless gift of GROWTH. With the education of the youth of Salem as its prime objective, the faculty of dedicated teachers has provided us with the intellectual op- portunity for MENTAL GROWTH. Skills, trades, and fundamental knowl- edge are the rewards for the combined efforts of teachers and students. The most obvious effect of our years here at Salem High is PHYSICAL GROWTH. Whether in interscholastic varsity competition, intramural activities, or physical education and health classes, we have shared in that unbeatable spirit that dominates every field of athletic endeavor from gridiron to cinder oval. SOCIAL GROWTH has been, perhaps, the most enjoyable. Learning to live with our neighbors, enjoying the benefits of mutual friendship- all have been gained through participation in extracurricular activities. The most important growth, however, is SPIRITUAL. We have learned to live to know ourselves and our fellow man, and above all, we have learned to meet the problems of modern society. The glorious era of high school is over. The Class of 1958 has joined the thousands of past graduates. Now, we, too, are a part of that noble tradition— The Salem High heritage. Yes, these have been truly wonder- ful years— times of gay laughter, tearful sadness, and hopeful dreams. We bid farewell, ALMA AAATER, with sadness and gratitude. Shall we ever forget you and these— the GOLDEN YEARS? Ralph Sloan Editor-in-Chief THE GOLDEN YEARS Four years at Salem High have just ended. Now, tradition— The Salem High heritage. Ye ful years— times of gay laughter, tearfu We bid farewell, ALMA MATER, we ever forget you and these— the GC ( A wise old professor under whom I studied philosophy used to interrupt the regular work once in a while to give his students some advice, and I pass his wisdom along to you. It was always the same advice, Beware, he used to warn us, of the fatal facility of youth. By facility he meant the quick and easy way. He called it fatal because it leads to failure or to shortened and trivial goals. They require strength of purpose and steady striving from day to day, from year to year, before they are reached. Today ' s world will present you with difficult problems, but also with many opportunities. To solve these problems and to make the most of these opportunities will call for determination and endurance. As you leave Salem High School, all of us wish you well in your journey toward the great and enduring goals of life. CHESTER R. TlVNAN Vice Pri.nc pa This space in THE WITCH is usually devoted to a message from our Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Peter F. Carbone. Illness has prevented his contributing the words of inspiration and accom- plishment. In place of his annual message, however, we, the Class of ' 58, wish to pay special tribute to this honored educator. His efforts in behalf of the education of the youth of Salem, and the en- couragement and achievements of the teaching profession, mark him as a dedicated leader in the community and the world of education. Mr. Carbone, we, the Class of ' 58, wish you continued success in all your endeavors. MR. CARBONE Superintendent of Schools Congratulations to the Class of 1958. Your senior year has witnessed marvelous scientific advancement. The age of man-made satellites is now a reality. Your future opportunities will be even greater. Be prepared for them. Good luck and best wishes for continued success to all. JOHN M. CONWAY Director, Vocational High School Congratulations, Class of 1958! I rejoice with all of you on the occasion of your graduation. For four years you have been active in behalf of the school, and you have cherished her stand- ards in your various social and scholastic activities. I have a very happy recollection of our con- tacts during this period of time. Now, your paths will spread in various directions, but remember that real success in life con- sists of the conscientious discharge of your duty to God, to country, and to yourself. It is my heartfelt wish that the unfolding years will bring to each and everyone of you happiness and pleasure of achievement. DOROTHEA R. To Miss Miaskiewicz, literary advisor; Mr. Pasquale, art advisor; Mr. John Tivnan; and to others who have kindly given their time to help us make this yearbook a complete success w6 say Thank You. The ADVANCE, the oldest high school publication in New England, provides an opportunity for all literary talents of students to be demonstrated. The Advance staff is very appreciative to Miss Valentina Glebow, Mr. Dominec Mizzi, and Mr. Joseph Pszenny for their untiring efforts in making this publication possible. The LITERARY CLUB, although an infant in comparison to other clubs in the school, has shown much mac ture thinking and action. Under the direction of Mr. Donald Murphy, the club has read many interesting classics. It has also played host to many speakers who discussed works of interest. LITERARY CLUB FRONT ROW: F. Archon, P. Every year a few junior and senior girls are called upon to work as assistants to the guidance counselors. Keeping the files up to date, delivering messages, typing letters, rexographing, and filing college catalogs are among the duties of the guidance assistants. These girls render a service which aids in maintaining an efficient Guidance Department. The job of the office assistants is similar to that of the guidance assistant. However, these girls have the additional tasks of answering the telephone in the main office, sorting mail and delivering messages to various teachers. Through this medium, the students obtain beneficial training for later life. OFFICE ASSISTANTS FRONT ROW: L. Day, P. Picone, M. Hughes, J. Guerriero, E. Murphy, N. Souza, A. Sobiesielska. We serve, is the motto of the Junior Red Cross Council, and its service is provided by volunteers. Its main function is to help others in need. Some examples of the work being done by the Junior Red Cross Council include the sending of chests full of useful items to foreign countries and supplying of holiday favors to hospitals. The many cake and candy sales, and auctions in the lunchroom were successful in providing the treasury with funds needed to defray the expenses incurred by its services. The guidance of the Council is supervised by Miss Christine Miaskiewicz, club advisor, and Miss Mary Cass, director of the Salem High enrollment drive. Their untiring efforts have made its members proud to belong to the Junior Red Cross Council. LIBRARY CORPS FRONT ROW: R. Newton, N. Smith, R. Needleman, J. Conroy, R. Lanswby, M. Ellard, J. The Library Corps has rendered thirteen years of invaluable service to the Salem High School. Since its organization, the duties of its members have increased greatly in quantity and stature. Members spend one period each ' week assisting Miss Dorothy Annable, the librarian, in her work. The Corps is fortunate in having as two fine co-advisors, Miss Dorothy Annable and Miss Dorothea R. Leonard. In 1947, it came to the attention of Miss Ida Blossom that a more efficient service for carrying messages throughout the school was needed. Thus, was established the Messenger Corps. Since then, Miss Blossom has remained its able faculty advisor. Members of the group, who are chosen for their responsibility and character, devote one period each week to carrying messages throughout the school. MESSENGER CORPS FRONT ROW: C. Varley, M. SECOND ROW: George Franklin, Stephen Prochniak, Daniel Marshall, Ronald Ouelette, Arthur Dobrezelecki, Donat Femino. FIRST ROW: Ralph Sloan, Arthur Stewart, Robert Sheehan, Martin Hanscom, Paul A. Girard, John Sifaneck. Each year sixteen seniors are chosen to be Junior Rotarians. These boys are selected as representatives of the senior class by the Guidance Staff. Each month two different Rotarians are guests at the Rotary meeting at the Hawthorne Hotel. It is one of the more important groups at school as it forms a tie between the businessman of today, and the busi- nessman of tomorrow. SAFETY PATROL FRONT ROW: Robert Sheehan, William Conlon, Ralph Sloan, captain; Norman Tache, Paul A. Girard, Barry Silver, Gordon Stone. SECOND ROW: Richard O ' Leary, Philip Linskey, John Sifaneck, Lee Butcher, George Franklin, Frank Hale, William Callahan. THIRD ROW: Richard Floyd, John Ostrowski, Allen Grace, Walter Lewis, Bill Caron, Norman David. The Safety Patrol, headed by our vice-principal, Mr. John F. Tivnan, has helped make our corridors and stairways safer and less congested. The members of the patrol are chosen each year by Mr. Tivnan upon the recommendation of the mem- bers of the faculty. These boys are assigned posts at intersections in the corridors and on the stairways. Salem High School is fortunate in having an organization which contributes so much to the welfare of the student body. SPORTS CHEERLEADERS AND FLAG SQUAD FRONT: Georgianna Gagne, Claire Campbell, Connie Coulis, Linda Baldwin, Maryanne Jacavanco. BACK: Joan Skeffington, Joan Sobocinski, Nancy Halpin, Shirley Wright, Joan Gauthier. Although the football games were exciting in themselves, the spirit of the crowd was held high by Salem High ' s Cheerleaders. These girls, under the leadership of Miss Mantina Lefthes, worked and practiced hard to cheer their team to victory. A familiar sight in their snappy red and white uniforms, this great group of girls kept the spirit aloft even when the score was low. Salem High ' s Baton Squad, under the expert guidance of Mr. Ahern, added color and entertainment to the football games last season. The well-trained, vivacious girls in their striking red and white uniforms, performed many intricate movements on the field. Working along with them were two soloists who provided specialty numbers for extra enjoyment. FRONT: Sandra Nikerowski, captain; Linda Day, Valarie Voyer, Sandra Robinson. front row- H at, R ■O ' Leary, R ' ,T hearn ' W - Dobrnlecki r Oatchell I enia tous, J p r ' Guy, y r- ... Due to the fine cooperation and team spirit, this year ' s football squad, under the coaching of Coach Walter Sheri- dan and Assistant Coach Manuel DeCastro, experienced many victories. It is the wish of this year ' s Yearbook Staff that next year ' s squad will have an equal amount of success in its efforts. The Salem High Hoopsters deserve commenda- tion on their successful season of fourteen wins and two losses. Because of their outstanding record, the Witches, coached by Glenn O ' Brien, were once again in- vited to participate in the Tech Tourney. Among the stars of this year ' s team were Richard MacKenna, Dick Milliken, Tom Gardner, Richard O ' Learly, Ed and Harry Nolan, Manly Solovicos, and Norman Tache. Under the untiring efforts of Beaver Pelletier, the boys of the hockey team showed fine ability to play the game well. They displayed speed, ac- curacy, and above all great teamwork which is essential in making a successful team. The best of luck to the hockey squad of 1959. For the past three years Coach Connie Crean has produced a championship track team for Salem High. In addition to the promising underclass- men the team was proud of its seniors who include the star of the team Herb Osgood, R. AAilliken, G. Ouellette, R. Sloan and R. Mizioch. Among the most enjoyable springtime sports at Salem High is baseball. Under the coaching of Bill Fitzgerald this year ' s team had experienced both victories and defeats. In every game, however, the team demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship. With a little more experience, we feel certain that this promising team wil credit the Witches with another championship squad. GOLF It is the opinion of many today that golf may eventually become America ' s number one sport. Whether this is true or not really does not matter to boys like Charles Kozlowski and John Sifaneck who enjoy the game immensely. The boys at Salem High have an excellent opportunity of learning to play the game of golf under the expert tutelage of Coach Francis Connors. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL FRONT ROW: Nancy Halpin, Paula Brophy, Lee Dallaire, Sandra Nekorowski, Vicky Thomas, Claire Manning, Maureen Hubley, Sherrill Wozniak. SECOND ROW: Nancy Rosenfeld, Sandra Pecevich, Gail Dejardins, Susan Bruce, Adrienne Masse, Dianne McBride, Barbara Griggs, Virginia Hackett, Dorothy Nestor, Marjorie Zetland. THIRD ROW: Dorothy Dalton, Geraldine Moore, Barbara Derby, Barbara Banford, Gail Gardzinir, Gertrude George. The girls ' version of the major sport of basketball is equally exciting as the boys ' contest. Participation in this sport offers stimulation, recreation and initiative to the girls on the team. Congratulations to the 1 957 squad for its success. ADVANCE DANCE NOMA Each year the Commercial Seniors take national tests in two of four major fields of Bookkeeping, Stenography, Typewriting, and General Clerical office skills: The tests are practical production tests prepared by businessmen in cooperation with business educators to test the ability of high school students (over a period of time) to successfully do the work commonly found on the beginning office job. This year, once again, the students made an excellent showing as the long list of those who successfully met the rigid requirements indicates. That Salem High School ranks among the top ten cities of its size in the country in the number taking the tests and the results achieved speaks well for our school. VOCATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Salem Classical and High School Chapter of the National Honor Society was founded to recognize scholastic achievement, and to encourage students to develop qualities of Leadership, Character and Service. No honor conferred by the school excels that represented by the society, because it represents the fundamental objects for which schools are instituted. The emblem of the society is the keystone and flaming torch. The keystone symbolizes the stability of the four virtues of education: Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character. The flaming torch symbolizes the search for truth, leadership and the enduring values of life. GRADUATION . ( ' Wi SENIOR RECEPTION Compliments of FRANK A.
