t6e 1957 Sate TVitcA MUEM high SCHOOL lM.ft J77 WILLSON STR E! SALEM, MA. 01 ®7® Published by the Senior Class of 1957 I CLASSICAL AND HIGH SCHOOL VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Salem, Massachusetts Property of. £ Ckouk In September of 1953, a group of young, inexperienced students, nervous with anticipation and thoroughly awed by the upperclassmen, crossed the portals of Salem Classical and High School. It didn’t take long for them to become an integral part of S. H. S. They soon shared with the rest of the student body joys, problems, victories, feats, happiness, disappointments. They added to the vitality of the school by sponsoring their Freshman Frolic. This presented an opportunity for them to meet one another socially and to start them on the pathway to unity. Now as the respected, admired, and frightened upperclassmen — Sophomores — they organized the Poor Man’s Prom” and became more and more like one group rather than a number of individuals. As Juniors, they displayed their good judgement and faith in people by electing four of their best classmates as class officers. Working together, they planned square dances and a ski trip. They obtained their first material sign of advancement — class rings — which are made of impressive black onyx bear- ing the Salem witch. Finally the social event of the year, the Junior Prom. This affair certainly confirmed their extreme unison and co-operation, for they held the best prom ever contained in those hallowed walls. Seniors at last! The square dances, the newly initiated Christmas Ball, the excellent Revue,” and the long anticipated Senior Reception, all contributed to the enjoyment and oneness of this incomparable class. Graduation Day — a happy day, and yet at commencement exercises, most realized that besides beginning a new life, they were unwillingly ending the old one. Their unity of body is gone, but never their unity of spirit, never their treas- ured memories, never their mementos of their high school life. It was a full life; it was a happy life; and above all, it was a united life. This was the Class of nineteen hundred and fifty-seven!!! DedlcatiM During the four years that we spent at Salem High— years that have been both fruitfu l academically and happy socially — the faculty have been our edu- cational leaders and our friends. They have been genial and patient as teach- ers in the classroom, and friendly and congenial in our social affairs. They have taught us much by example, as well as by word. To the entire Salem High faculty, as well as the principal, Mr. Arnold; to the vice principal, Mr. Tivnan; and to all the other administrative members of the faculty, we, the class of 1957, are duly grateful. Our gratitude can be expressed in no better way than by this dedication of The Witch,” sincerely made and thankfully offered. Oan, ' paccdty Dorothy Annable, Librarian Marie L. Barry Robert E. Rapid changes have been going on in the world during the short span of your four years at Salem High. In that time words like auto- mation and fission have become part of the common vocabulary and imply further great changes to come. There are, however, words that never change or lose their signi ficance — words like integrity , loyalty, and reverence. These are the really important words. How well you have learned the meanings of the eternal words, and how well you apply these meanings in your life — that will be the true measure of your success. This, too, will be the measure of our success as teachers. CHESTER R. ARNOLD Principal, Salem Classical and High School Congratulations to the class of 1957. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Miss Theresa E. Miaskiewicz and Mr. Al- fred J. Pasquale for their untiring effort in producing this Yearbook. I have a special place in my memory for the class of ’57 because it was only four short years ago that I, too, entered Salem High. The years have been truly interesting, exciting and educational. May the lessons you have learned at Salem High prove lasting, and may the future bring to each of you the success you so deserve. JOHN F. TIVNAN Vice Principal, Salem Classical and High School To the members of the Class of 1957 of Salem Classical and High School, I extend my heartiest congratulations. May the splendid friendships that you have made during the four years in high school be continued through- out the rest of your lives. Your parents and those of us who have had an opportunity to observe your development throughout the years that you have attended the schools in Salem, know that you will do your part in meeting the complex challenges of modern society, and that you will ably handle any and all responsi- bilities that are given you. PETER F. CARBONE Superintendent of Schools Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1957. May the coming years witness the fulfillment of your highest aspirations. Go forth with confidence in yourselves and in the future. Challenges will be great, but with fortitude and trust you can meet them success- fully. JOHN M. CONWAY Director, Salem Vocational High School To the Class of 1957: Having been counselor to your class has been an unforgettable experience. And, may I add, a pleasant one. In our close association for four years 1 learned to admire and respect your resource- fulness. While I make no claims that you are the outstanding class that ever graduated from Salem High School, I am, nevertheless, proud of the record you have written. You are a friendly, responsive group of young adults with many fine personal traits. I feel I have made many lasting friendships, and I sincerely hope that this feeling is reciprocated. My best wishes go with you everywhere, every time. The Salem Vocational High School Student Council was organized to provide unity and cooperation between pupils and the faculty; to develop the spirit, ideals, and prac- tice of good citizenship; to provide a means of adequate government and management of extracurricular activities; to promote the general welfare of Salem Vocational High School, its good name, and reputation; to coordinate certain activities with the Classical High School Student Council. One of the most effective methods of teaching the principles of democracy to the students of the Salem Classical and High School is the Student Council. Organized formally in 1933, it has since been a medium for promoting the interests of the school. It has helped to develop a friendly relationship between the students and the faculty, and to build school morale. During the past year the Student Council has been very active. It has provided many entertaining and cultural assemblies, sponsored several successful dances, and taken part in the Get Out and Vote” contest, which was sponsored by the Get Out and Vote” Committee at the time of the presidential election. This year the Council presented the school with a new microphone and contributed to the P. T. Kenneally Scholarship Fund. The Student Council wishes to express its appreciation to Mr. John B. Daly, faculty advisor, for his interest and enthusiasm in the work of the Council. We, the Yearbook Staff of 1957, had for the chief purpose of this publication the tabulation of activities which we have enjoyed throughout our high school career. We would like to offer our most sincere thanks to Mr. John Tivnan, our business staff advisor; Miss Theresa E. Miaskiewicz, our literary staff advisor; and Mr Alfred Pasqualle, our art staff advisor, for the time and encouragement they have so generously given us. It is the hope of the Yearbook Staff of 1957 that the members of the class will open this book proudly and remember with pleasure the the years they spent at Salem High. First published in 1890, it is now the medium through which students are informed of all the school activities, and appreciate the best literary efforts of their schoolmates. Under the direction of Miss Valentina Glebow, Mr. Domenico Mizzi, and Mr. Joseph Pszenny, student reporters from each class diligently work to publish this outstanding magazine. The Class of 1957 would like to thank sincerely the advisors of the magazine for all their patience, understanding, and guidance in helping to edit The Advance. We know that in the future it will continue to furnish enjoyment to the students of Salem High. €?ucda tce Back row: Shirley Chase, Cynthia L ' ltalian, Doris Pierce, Lorraine Giannacopolis, Clara Cashman, Claire Campbell, Barbara Theriault. The Junior Red Cross Council is one of the leading service organizations of Salem High School. Under the guidance of Miss Christine Miaskiewicz, the faculty advisor, the council had a very successful year. Their services were many. The annual enrollment drive enabled the Council to send representatives to the National Junior Red Cross Conference. During this drive several members talked to the grammar schools to aid their individual enrollments. Prior to Christmas, the Council entertained patients at the Salem Hopital with Christmas Carols. Again, in March, the group presented another program at the hospital. However, the most important service was that given by the members who helped the Red Cross Chapter. Some members assisted at headquarters on Blood Donor Day, while others washed windshields to urge blood donations. Salem High School is proud of the Junior Red Cross for its work in fulfilling its purpose by serving both our own people and our neighbors in other lands. One of the most active organizations of the school is the Library Corps, whose function is to make the library a pleasant and a helpful place in which both students and teachers can study. The members of this organization find this invaluable experience to be not only edu- cational, but also enjoyable. The untiring effort and assistance rendered by Miss Annable, librarian, and Miss Leonard, co-sponsor, is greatly appreciated by all the members of the Corps and by the students of Salem High. i }fCe e t €x First row : Rachel Needleman, Sandra Dansker, Cynthia L’ltalien, Valerie Voyer, Nancy Tollo, Barbara Theriault. The Messenger Corps, organized in 1947 by Miss Ida L. Blossom, is one of the most important service organizations in the school. Members, who are chosen for their de- pendability, integrity, and self-reliance, devote at lease one period a week to the Corps to deliver messages throughout the school. A regular monthly meeting is held by the members at which time business and social affairs are discussed and entertainment and refreshments are provided. The members of the Messenger Corps wish to extend their thanks to their faculty advisor, Miss Ida L. Blossom, who has always done her utmost to see that the Corps is the successful organization that it is. Under the direction of Mr. Edward McCabe, the members of the Movie Club spend many entertaining hours as producers and as viewers of their own movies. The club not only furnishes the students with the opportunity of learning to operate a movie camera, but also furnishes them with much diversion. One of the most popular organizations at the high school today is the Glee Club. Under the capable direction of Mr. Miller Ulle, the Glee Club has given many performances throughout the year, the most outstanding of these being the March Concert, which helped raise money for the P. T. Kenneally Scholarship Fund. The Song Club, composed of seniors, was first organized this year by Mr. Ldle. The National Business Entrance Tests are sponsored jointly by the National Office Management Association and the National Business Education Association. They are set up to test pupils’ ability in the various office skills. These tests given on a nationwide basis are prepared by a group of office managers and business teachers and serve to test the ability of high school seniors at the com- pletion of their four years’ training in the field of stenography, bookkeeping, general office clerical work and typewriting. In addition, for each student to qualify for the coveted Certificate of Proficiency, he must pass a Fundamentals Test in Business Arithmetic, English, Punctuation, Spelling, and General Knowledge of common and current events. Because of the severity of the examinations not too many schools use these examina- tions and most of the schools which do give the examinations to their pupils, give them only to the top few in each skill area. At Salem High School all commercial seniors take part in the examination series. We want to give EACH pupil the opportunity and the experience of taking a real stand- ardized production test, which, incidentally, is administered over a four-day period. This is the seventh year of our participation in this national testing program. Salem High School ranks among the ten top schools in the nation in cities under 50,000 and in the number taking and passing these tests. This year the high number of 44 out of 65 commercial seniors received certificates and 10 received a second special certificate of superior proficiency because of their top score of between 96 and 100 per cent. cation. These boys are chosen by Mr. Arnold, principal, on the merits of their leadership and sense of responsibility. The boys who become Junior Rotarians attend the meetings of the Rotary Club of Salem in pairs. Each pair attends the meetings for a full month. The Junior Rotarians of 1956-1957 wish to thank the members of the Rotary Club for the hospitality extended to them. The Projectionists are, perhaps, the most called upon to render their services to the teachers. Since these boys are trained to operate projectors of all types, they are able to aid the teachers in the showing of films which constitute an important part of the visual aid program at Salem High. The Projectionists, sponsored by Mr. DiCastro, render a service to the school which is appreciated by students, as well as teachers. The Cheerleaders and Flag Squad, arrayed in snappy new uniforms, together with the Baton Squad, opened the 1956-1957 season with the same vim and vigor as their predecessors. Directed by Mr. Ollie Ahearn, the Baton Squad added to the entertainment at foot- ball games. Led by Margaret Hughes, the squad displayed much fine maneuvering to the strains of some of the most popular tunes of the day. The Cheerleaders, ignited by their many cheers and enjoyable rallies, under the guid- ance of Miss Mantina Lefthes, aroused the school spirit and enthusiasm of the student body. One of the most outstanding and enjoyable dances held at Salem High this year was sponsored jointly by the Cheerleaders and Flag Squad. The Flag Squad, who also obtained assistance and guidance from Miss Mantina Lefthes, led the band and Baton Squad on the field at the football games. etnecu esi t£e d unc?
