We were mercilessly teased and very much annoyed by the jokes and pranks of the upperclassmen. We succeeded, somehow, in spite of the many jokes and pranks, in coming out of our hectic freshmen year alive and sane (we think). Now we were sophomores and awarded the privilege of looking down upon our less experienced colleagues. Our boys had not as yet shone too well on the school athletic teams, but they were still out there trying and doing their best. As juniors, we were definitely installed as the “wheels” of the school. Our boys were really beginning to shine on the various athletic teams and we, therefore, displayed our school spirit and gave the teams some real support. As class officers we elected: Richard Ouellette, president; Alice Pronska, vice-president; Roger Caron, treasurer; and Yolanda Spinale, secretary. In the middle of May our Junior Class held one of the most breathtaking and exciting Proms in recent years. Now, as seniors, we look back on a year of interest, activity, and study, realizing that if we had it to live over, we would do all the same things again. As our class officers we elected: Larry Tracey, president; Mary Mroz, vice-president; Paul Shortell, treasurer; and Joan Brennan, secretary. It is with a feeling of the greatest joy and satisfaction that we look back on all the activities of our last year at Salem High School: the Senior Hop, the Class Banquet, Graduation, and our Reception. Now that we are about to leave our high school days behind us, we sincerely hope that we have lived up to the expectations of our parents, principal, and teachers. 44 WlTc-11-f- fo R. -CW r u D xV T CO UAIC I (_ Stude nt Council President: Margaret Powers Vice-President: William Nestor Recording Secretary: Therese Sobocinski Corresponding Secretary: Henry Wong Treasurer: Paul Shortell The Student Council has been in existence fourteen years. The purposes for which this organization was formed are as follows: to help to make a more perfect school; to promote a better feeling; and to create a more perfect understanding between the pupils and the teachers. This organization is composed of a delegate and a chairman from each homeroom. All the students in the school take an active part in the special homeroom meetings. This year the Student Council conducted a magazine subscription project that was very successful. The Council also made several improvements in the lunchroom facilities. At a recent convention in Concord, Massachusetts, Margaret Powers and Marshall Baker led a discussion on the role of the Student Council in extra- curricular activities. Th e accomplishments of the Council have been many. This fact is due to the excellent co-operation of the entire student body. The Student Council is following its purpose and will continue with success to make our school more perfect. Much credit is due to Mr. John B. Daly, who has been of great assistance in helping the Council to maintain its high standard of service. {«} Advance The Advance has passed through another successful and memorable year. Again the Staff and Advisers have tried to bring to the students what they want in their high school magazine and have insisted on a high standard in all material accepted. This success has been brought about mainly through the co-operation and enthusiasm of all connected with the magazine. The Advance has carried on the tradition of bringing to the students the general gossip of the school, news of our graduates, exchanges, sports, and society news, and the best literary accomplishments of our students. The Literary Board is under the able direction of Miss Valentina Glebow, Literary Adviser. To her we give many thanks. Under the guidance of Mr. Dominic Mizzi, Faculty Adviser, and a very capable Advisory Board, the business of the magazine was handled in a very efficient manner. Many advertisements were secured, some new, and others of long standing. A good Art Department and a gifted Art Adviser are essential to any successful magazine and the Advance this year certainly had both. Our heartfelt thanks to Mr. Festus L. Rousseau, the Art Adiviser, for his talented guidance of the members of the Art Department, all of whom showed special ability and skill in their work. We, the staff of 1949, now relinquish our positions to the staff of 1950. We wish again to thank the Faculty Advisers to whom we owe much of our success. Ever since the seniors of 1937 made history by publishing the first Yearbook, it has been the object of all senior classes to present an interesting and informative Yearbook. Our main purpose in publishing this Yearbook has been to record the joys and activities of our four years, and to help us remember with pictures our many friends and acquaintances. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the student body, the faculty, and Mr. Kennealley for their invaluable and tireless assistance and their inspiring advice. We of the Yearbook Staff of 1949 sincerely hope that in future years our classmates will look back upon the pictures and stories of this Yearbook and rejoice in the memories that it holds in store for them. { 50 Yearbook Staff Editor- in -Ch ief, John Jennings Assistant Editor, Eleanor Obremski Literary Editors Marlene Dowd Theresa Szczechowicz George Marcopoulos Janet Osgood David Nicholson Eleanor Sheehan David Lockard Mary Kilfoyle Assistants Edward Pauling Barbara Jones Costas Lagos Alice Pronska Paul Walsh Natalie Volmer Paul Welch Barbara Collier Photography Editor, William Pattee Assistants, Donald Maron, Barbara Brillard Boys’ Sports Editor, Bernard Kaminski Assistants, Samuel Cronis, James Roberts Girls’ Sports Editor, Dolores Fillacio Assistants, Doris Courtney, Constance Porter Club Editor, Cynthia Sadowski Assistants, Lydia Walczak, Dorothy Southam, Roger Caron, William Buckley Art Co -Editors Stephen Femino William Gentile Sandra Jenkins Joan Skoniecki Norma Titcomb Circulation Manager, Kenneth Miller Assistants, Barbara Zealor, Barbara Sweeney, Wayne Spiller, Philip Hussey Advertising Manager, Burton Freedman Assistant, Roger Gagnon Advertising Committee Janet Knowlton Philip Doyle Gloria LeBel Phyllis Levin Philip Herman Robert Meaney John Kennedy Franklin O’Brien Arthur Tardiff Photography Committee Paul Shortell Joan Brennan Dolores Jarzynka Donald Olendzenski Henry Wong Christina Leavitt Marcel Pelletier Yolanda Spinale Walter Webster Margaret Powers Donald Hayes Lawrence Tracy Mary Mroz SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH ■■■ .-linn i — . , i f wy Latin Club The first meeting of the Latin Club for the year 1948 to 1949 took place on October 20, at 1.15 p.m. in Room 407. The Latin Club started its thirty-sixth year with the election of officers. Miss Shearer called the meeting to order and presented the officers and committees of the club. This group gathered and carefully selected the member- ship list. In view of the best interests, the desirable qualifications for each officer were studied. Each following meeting was enjoyed by all. Roman songs, plays and movies were presented, and refreshments were served. The Club is saddened by the retirement of Miss Shearer, the adviser. For many years, she gave unsurpassed service to Salem High School. i 52 } Dramatic Club President: Arthur Tardiff Vice-President : Marlene Dowd Secretary: Joseph Winiarz Treasurer : Barbara Sweeney The members of the Dramatic Club are interested in all phases of play production: acting, lighting, scenery designing and construction, and direct- ing. Each year many members have the opportunity to participate actively in the preparation and production of one-act plays. The Club’s annual Drama Night was presented in February. In “The Devil and Miss Appleby,” Satan himself paid a young retired school teacher a friendly visit which resulted in humorous confusion. In “Miss Sydney Car- ton,” the irrepressible Jane Jones tried to play Sydney Carton in real life and almost succeeded in upsetting the entire neighborhood. An adaptation of Moliere’s classic comedy, “The Imaginary Invalid,” closed the program. The members have had many hours of pleasure and profit in the vari- ous activities of the year and are thankful to their capable and patient adviser, Mr. John Tellier. SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH SCH Art Club Unknown until now are the talents of some of our high school students. This year the Art Club attracted a membership of thirty-seven. Amongst this membership, amazing results were seen. The first meeting based on the trying out of ability in drawing silhouettes, and in getting acquainted with the different mediums such as pencil and charcoal sketching, many talents were discovered, and the new members certainly are gifted this year just as they have been in the past. The interest of the members was seen at the demonstration, in which the art teacher, Mr. Festus Rousseau, demonstrated the art of drawing from life, a pastel portrait. The pupil posing for this portrait was chosen from the members present by a drawing of names from a hat. Preceding the drawing the pupil sat in a chair sideview for the pose. Mr. Rousseau began the portrait by sketching in charcoal, which was surprisingly correct. He then proceeded with the pastels making his choice of colors very carefully. There is no need to describe the results. The Art Club certainly was a great help to the members as well as a great credit to the school. The officers of the Club include: Mimi Karem, president; Stephen Femino, vice-president; Leo Sauve, secretary; William Gentile, treasurer. The Publicity Staff included: Elayne Collins, Herbert Wilkins, Sophie Georgelas, Louise Bousquet. Exhibition Jury were M. Clark, J. Georgelas, D. Langlois, and S. Georgelas. With such success achieved, the Art Club members and Mr. Rousseau hope that a strong foundation has been laid for the years to come in the Art Club. All associated with the Art Club hope that this fine record will continue, and that in future years, the year 1949 will stand out beyond the rest. J 54 Music Club President: Kenneth Miller Vice-President: Christina Leavitt Secretary: Dorothy Southam Treasurer: A. William Pattee The Arthur Fiedler Music Club, one of the largest clubs in the High School, has been honored this year by the acceptance of Mr. Arthur Fiedler, well-known conductor of the famed Boston Pops, as honorary sponsor. The purpose of the club is to instill in the students a better apprecia- tion and understanding of music, and also to recognize and promote talent. The club held many cultural and social affairs during the year. Talent shows and music contests were held. In March, the members of the Arthur Fiedler Club journeyed to Boston with members of the Glee Clubs to see “Carmen.” Dur- ing the past year, the club members purchased club pins. The chief event of the year was a musical program held at the high school where Mr. Fiedler was present as guest of honor. At this time, he was presented with a scroll and club pin. Closing its fifth successful year, the Arthur Fiedler Club wishes to thank Mrs. Hester Wulffaert for her capable, energetic, and enthusiastic advice. SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH Movie Club President: Simon Kuczun Vice-President : Dorothy A. Southam Secretary: Ann M. O’Malley Treasurer: Peter T. Victory The Salem High School Movie Club has been under the capable di- rection of Mr. Edward J. McCabe now for thirteen years. Since the beginning of the club, the constitution has provided life membership for all those members whose records elect them to the Honor Roll. The club wishes to encourage self-government at its meetings, and initiative in its activities. It stresses the importance of fellowship and co- operation among the Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. During this “thirteenth year” of the Movie Club, the members have been shown many interesting movies. The movies were on such subjects as: sports, music, the U. S. Army, industries, our South American neighbors, and even the previous year’s club members. Everyone has enjoyed the membership in the Movie Club; the Seniors will not forget their pleasant memories, and the under-classmates are looking forward to more activities next fall. { 56 } Junior Red Cross Council Chairman: Margaret B. Derby Vice-Chairman: Ann M. O’Malley Secretary: Ruth A. Crowley Publicity: William Pattee The motto of Junior Red Cross is: WE SERVE. Service and the encourag ement of intercultural relations are the main objectives. To implement such a program during the past year, the Salem High School Council has engaged in fund raising activities as well as knitting an afghan for use in a veterans’ hospital. To promote intercultural relations, besides the usual Christmas boxes, this year the Council prepared an interesting album to be sent abroad. Sponsored by our Council, through the courtesy of National Head- quarters, an Art Exhibit and tea was held at the Chapter House. The life blood of American Red Cross has been its volunteers. May our Junior Red Cross Council at Salem High always be a source of renewed vitality. The faculty advisers of the Junior Red Cross Council are Miss Margaret Yerrinton and Miss Mary Cass. SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH SCH Library Corps President: George Marcopoulos Vice-President : Ruth Ann Crowley Secretary: Alice Pronska Treasurer : Richard Locke The Student Library Corps, under the guidance of the school librarian, Miss Dorothy Annable, is now in its fifth successful year. The Corps, composed of upper classmen, has demonstrated a fifth time, the value and necessity of their assistance by compiling a scrapbook of school newspaper publicity, keeping the library shelves in order, taking charge of the desk during many periods each week, and doing other tasks which make the School Library more effective. A great attraction of the library is the picturesque Bulletin Board which features colorful, artistic displays with related books on Intercultural Relations, Careers, and School Clubs, among other subjects. Most of the dis- plays are designed and arranged by the Corps members themselves. The Library Corps staged a successful performance in the form of a radio-quiz show in October. This was composed and directed by Library Corps members, with many members taking part in the presentation. This year from the “Tell-or-Die” show, the Library Corps presented to the school library a set of Mclntire eagle book-ends, and Reeman’s “Life of George Washington.” Also this year, the Library Corps, using proceeds of the “Tell-or-Die” show, offered a new service to the school. For six months, the organization bor- rowed from the Museum of Fine Arts, one modern painting each month, and dis- played it in the Library. The students’ interest was keen. i 58 The Witch’s Brew Co-Editors Ralph Phillips Dorothy Southam Ralph Osgood Staff Donald Olendzenski Sandra Jenkins William Gentile Steven Femino Ruth Banks Henry Wong Dolores Fillacio George Marcoupoulous Burton Freedman Ann O’Malley Margaret Derby Paul Welch Faculty Adviser: Miss Margaret Yerrinton The Witch’s Brew was organized by the Class of ’47 in order to present the senior class with a friendly, interesting, and humorous publication. This is the Brew’s third successful year under the direction of Miss Margaret Yerrinton. The staff hopes that The Brew will continue to be carried on by future classes, and that it will be further enlarged until the whole school will benefit from it. The staff also sincerely wishes that this publication will continue with a spirit of friendship, understanding, humor, and good will among all. SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH Glee Club The Salem High School Glee Club, founded by Mrs. H. Wulffoert, has celebrated its second birthday anniversary. In this short space of time, three groups of pupils have met regularly to sing. One of the groups is known as “Glee Club A” and is composed of students attending the music classes. Then “Glee Club B” and “Glee Club C” are composed of the pupils meeting after school. From the combined groups, there is a membership of two hundred students. “Harmony Boys’’ and “Melody Maids” have been selected from the regular groups of singers to furnish music calling for smaller groups. Besides the inspiring Christmas program and the successful Spring Festival, the Glee Club has appeared before many of the leading clubs in Salem. We wish to thank Mrs. Hester Wulffoert for her splendid work in organizing and directing the very fine Glee Club. 60 History of Salem Project Editor-in-Chief: Dorothy Southam Executive Committee : George Marcopolous Christina Leavitt Margaret Derby Henry Wong During their junior year, the thirteen members of the History Project began their interesting work. Delving into the records and history of early Salem, they have written the story of our city. Because no other author has written this story in a form simple enough for school children, the book written by these students is to be used by the Salem children in grades four through six. Now in their senior year, the students, under the supervision of the History and English Departments have completed a book which should be very useful to the children of Salem. 4 62 } Geographical Society President: Jean Roderick Vice-President: Carlton Rowand Secretary: Anna Rafatopoulos Treasurer: Jane E. Arnold The Geographical Society of Salem High School is again under the capable guidance of Mr. Paul Porochniak. The purpose of the club is (1) to create good fellowship among its members; (2) to add to their knowledge of local and national industries by sponsoring lectures, field trips, and correspondence; (3) to develop their ability to discuss world economic problems. All meetings of the society are conducted according to parliamentary procedure. This year, thirty-six members of the club, including four members of the faculty, enjoyed a most entertaining and educational trip to Washington and Annapolis via New York. This tour was arranged through the Carmen- Kimball Travel Agency of Salem. The club is now making plans for another trip to be conducted next year. SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH Safety Patrol Captain: Richard Ouellette Co-Captain : Sam Cronis The Safety Patrol, now in its third year, has proven itself to b e a necessary factor in the routine of our school. The success of the Patrol, justifies the continued guidance of Mr. Thomas McNamara, and the enthusiasm of our principal, Mr. Arnold, in the belief that the Safety Patrol would become a vital and permanent influence in all that its name implies: safety for all students in the orderly passing between classes, and keeping the school free of accidents. Mr. Arnold has planned in future years to award emblems to the mem- bers and to allow them to sponsor an annual social affair. The boys deserve much credit for their untiring efforts in keeping the corridors orderly and free from accidents. Projectionists Under the guidance of Mr. I. Cohen, a group of boys have learned to run the sound projector at Salem High School. The group was divided into small sections with each assigned to a definite period in which two members would run off films on many assorted subjects such as history, physics, elec- tricity, geography, foreign languages, etc. The showing of these films has aided a great deal in the visual training program in this school. Results obtained through the use of these pictures have proved to be very satisfactory to the boys and girls, as well as helpful to the teacher. The boys in the picture above have every right to appear happy inas- much as they have taken part in helping their school further its educational resources. Our hats are off to those who donated their time to help their fellow students. SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH SCHOOL ‘ .. • -■ Photography Club President: A. William Pattee Vice-President : Paul Berry Secretary: Dorothy A. Southam Treasurer: Horatio Jackson The Photography Club, under the able leadership of Faculty Adviser, Mr. Joseph Smith, and Technical Adviser, Mr. Robert Crowley, has completed its second successful year. The club members consist of not only those students who have cam- eras, but of all Salem High students who are interested in taking good pictures, developing their own film and printing their own pictures, and the art of lighting and setting of portrait pictures. A field trip was taken around Historic Salem during the Spring in which every member got at least one good snapshot of either the Customs House, Hamilton Hall, or the statue of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Three photography contests, “Nature,” “Historic Salem,” and “The Winter Season,” were held during the year, bringing very satisfactory results. The Photography Club members have had an interesting and enjoy- able year and wish to thank their advisers and hope that next year’s club mem- bers will have as profitable time as they did. J66 Orchestra Director: Claude H. Phillips Student Leader: A. William Pattee The Salem High School Orchestra was organized under the capable direction of Claude Phillips in 1925. Due to the helpful co-operation of the Kiwanis Club, musical instruments are loaned free of charge to interested stu- dents who wish to play in the orchestra. The organization is now an elective subject in the school curriculum. Under Mr. Phillips leadership, the members receive an extremely important and valuable background in orchestral work and this year for the third time arranged a successful concert. Each year the best qualified student is chosen to lead the orchestra. In this way a valuable foundatio n for future work in music is attained. At graduation three seniors receive from the Harris Fund an award for proficiency in music. The award consists of three volumes pertaining to music appreciation. SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH vyZgi ' : | P | -• 3 • Guidance Assistants Dorothy McDonald Barbara O’Connell Virginia Moynihan Ruth Crowley Jane L. Arnold Yolanda Spinale Agnes Provencher One of the interesting students participation projects in our school is the Assistants’ work in the Guidance Department. The aim of the Guidance Department is to develop in each student selected for the work, those qualities which will be a valuable contribution to her future work whether at college or in the business field. In the efficient performance of the daily tasks involved, the following qualities are developed: accuracy, system, attention to details, a sense of responsibility, willingness, re- sourcefulness, and initiative. A student who has these qualities and who adapts herself to the re- quirements of this department will work under actual office condition, in this way putting into practice any business skills or training which she possesses. The students perform duties consisting of typewriting of letters, envelopes, cards, and notices, keeping records and memoranda, mimeographing, and rex-o-graphing, sending for and filing school and college catalogues, keeping catalogues up to date, filing letters, folders, etc.; keeping records of work done, and carrying out any orders with efficiency and dispatch. The Guidance Department is greatly helped by the corps of assistants and appreciate the valuable work performed by the students. Any girl who has a study period the same period through the week and whose marks are high may make application for this work. j68 Junior Rotarians The Junior Rotarians is an organization founded to further friendli- ness and brotherhood among its members. In keeping with this democratic policy, the Salem Rotary Club has extended a permanent invitation to boys chosen by Principal Arnold and Vice-Principal Kennealley to join its ranks each year. These boys are chosen on their merits as future Rotarians. The Junior Rotarians attend senior meetings in pairs. The latter meet every Tuesday at 12.15 at the Hotel Hawthorne. The meetings consist of luncheon, community singing, and short lectures, which are a benefit to all the members of the club. The Junior Rotarians of 1948-1949 are grateful for the opportunity given them to enjoy and learn from senior meetings, and wish to express their thanks to the Rotary President for the many kindnesses extended to them. SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH Messenger Corps President: Ann O’Malley Vice-President: Sandra Jenkins Secretary: Lillian Banks Treasurer: Jane E. Arnold The Messenger Corps, now in its second successful year, is under the capable guidance of Miss Ida L. Blossom, a member of the faculty. This corps is composed of upper classmen, numbering over one hundred members. The purpose of the Messenger Corps is just what its name implies to convey important messages and to be of any possible assistance to the office and the teachers. The Messenger Corps members also act as guides and recep- tionists to any visitors that the school may have. The club meetings, held once a month, are conducted according to parliamentary procedure. In May a joint meeting of the Messenger Corps and the Library Corps honored Mr. Chester R. Arnold’s birthday. This year the Messenger Corps conducted a project to raise funds for their treasury. The project consisted of selling handmade Chinese baskets, which were on display for two weeks in the showcase on the main floor of the school. The members of the faculty realize the value and necessity of this competent messenger service, as it saves them much valuable time. ■{ 70 Football Coach: Glenn O’Brien Assistant Coach: John Carr Captain: Richard Ouellette Manager: Robert Cheney Letterinen Rene Boucher Arthur Carr Arthur Cecelski Philip Charette Sam Cronis Arthur Godjikian Raymond Gregorie John Haley John Jennings Robert Julien Raymond Kozlowski Edward Lane Joseph Marlaned Dominic Marraffa Albert Moses Arthur Munroe Roy Munson Richard Ouellette Leo Pelletier Fred Rathburn Donald Raymond Philip Richard James Roberts Albert Sirois Bert Thibault Larry Tracey Robert Cheney Summary of Season Scores of Games Salem 20 Saugus 12 Salem 12 Newburyport 13 Salem 6 Marblehead 6 Salem 0 Everett 6 Salem 6 Lowell 6 Salem 6 Lynn English 7 Salem 6 White Plains 20 Salem 25 Peabody 7 Salem 7 Brockton 19 Salem 0 B everly 38 Total 88 Total 114 Won 2 Lost 6 Tied 2 The 1948 Salem High football team was potentially one of the strong- est teams on the North Shore. J 80 } Track Coach Richard L. Buckley SUMMARY The 1949 track team is under the guidance of Richard L. Buckley, who is serving his first year as track coach of Salem High School. Although there are few veterans, the squad has many outstanding freshmen and sophomores who should develop into topnotch trackmen. The squad has been practising faithfully under the watchful eye of Coach Buckley and should give a good account of themselves this season. Some of the trackmen who are competing for various positions are: Nick Raftpopulos, Bob Kelley, John Heffernan, Bert Thibault, and John Evans as sprinters. Leading candidates for the 440 and 880 are Ted Hull, Ted Bart- kiewicz, and Paul Ginsberg. Arlie Dash and Don Gousman show real promise in the mile run. Dash, who is only a freshman, should develop into an outstand- ing miler; Joe Marlin, Ton Teeling, and Eric Von Saltza shot putters; John Heffernan, Jim Herderson, George Garret, Horatio Jackson, and Charlie Mac- Quarrie broad jump; Joe Marlin and George Garret high jump. In addition to these, there are several others that show promise on the cinders. Even though the schedule has not been completely filled, it is expected that the Salem aspirants will encounter some of the strongest opposition on the North Shore. SALEM CLASSICAL HIGH SCH . r.
