6 THE ADVANCE SALUTATORY ADDRESS AMERICA WE LOVE YOU ltlxain R. Parents, teachers, and friends, I wish to welcome you this afternoon to the solemn exercises marking the c011- clusion of our four years at the Salem High School. Parents, IIOWV you may be p1'oud of your children, teachers, finally through your efforts, you are sending out another group of gradu- ates eager to face the world, and class- mates, be of good cheer, graduation has come. America, now more than ever, we love you. Although war is soaring over your people, and Marxism threat- ening your democracy, we will not fail to hear your call. We will have faith in your laws, pride in your heroic past, and confidence in your glorious future. Our spur is the example left by Wash- ington, by Lincoln, and by other patri- ots. Our hope is based 011 your previ- ous triumph over all that has threat- ened the liberty of your people. We would he barbarians, not civilized per- sons, if we neglected you, America. America, we admire you for your government, built on the principles of equality, justice, and liberty, which ex- tends to every citizen security, free- dom, and opportunity. Education and science you foster and encourage, a home H111-l comfort you make accessible to all. Class distinction is now a bar- rier of the past, and God is worshipped according to the dictates of conscience. The people of Europe, Asia, and Africa MULSK1 have never achieved such a high stan- dard of living. and such golden oppor- tunities as we Americans enjoy. Then we should love you, America. America, we are proud of you. Your people are scientific minded. cul- tured, intelligent, and generous. Look at the examples of the past: Thomas Edison, a scientific genius, Benjamin Franklin. the most versatile American, and all the other inventors, scholars, philanthropists-they have created new horizons over which men have never before ventured. Hawthorne, Lo- well, Whittier, Benjamin West. Daniel Uhester French, Edward Macdowell, and other writers, artists. and musi- cians,-they turned the practical spirit of the Americans toward the cul- tural elements of life. Our public schools. colleges, and universities have made the American mind quick and broad. The examples of our patriots and statesmen have given us a noble past and a hopeful present. With all this heritage We should be proud to say, I am an American. America, Youth loves you. Looking at other countries, we realize what op- portunities you have given us. You offer us an education. you encourage ingenuity, and you protect ns against evil. It is for us you are now fighting this war. We will not forget you, America. We will laugh. study, work and fight for you, that you may be the most noble nation 011 the earth.
