4 THE ADVANCE we would do well to preserve those ideals which now we cherish, and which a busy, greedy world has rejected as impractical and unprofitable. Let us adhere to our ideals! Achievement without honorable motive is empty. Success with- out peace of mind is wretched. . Youth! Reach for the stars! A new wo1'ld must be built, and we must build it! ' .l..l.li.i OUR SCHOOL The Salem High School, erected so that the youth of Salem may be trained in greater service for the city, state, and nation. These words engraved on the stone tablet on the girls' side of our school building signify the reason for which our forefathers constructed this institution of learning. We, the graduating class of 1942. have indeed been competently trained during our four-year sojourn at Salem High, not only in the principles that will render us invaluable to our nation, but also in the basic rules of conduct that will undoubtedly assist us in our daily contact with others. Our teachers have taught us to perform faithfully our duty to our country as citizens. and to society as individualsg to accept with equal poise the pleasantries and victories. the grievances and defeats of lifeg to pursue steadily a definite goal. They have generously exerted every effort so that we might be adequately prepared to face the uncertainties of life. They have been indispensably helpful to us in our dire need, unfailingly patient with our bungling mistakes, genuinely interested in our hopeful plans for the future. They have placed great faith in our ability to succeed in the years that stretch before us, and, as we ventLu'e out into the world, we must prove that their implicit confidence in us is not in vain. The Salem High School alumni have sufficiently proved that they have strongly benefited by the laborious and tireless efforts of the faculty. We, too. have gained much to our advantage from our teachers. No doubt, in years to come, each succeeding graduating class will leave these halls of learning with an abundant store of knowledge and experience locked securely in their minds. It is certain that as long as Salem High School remains blessed with competent and diligent instructors, the youth of Salem may be assured of a thorough, bene- ficial education. A TRIBUTE SYLVIA TYLER, '42 As friends and teachers of our early years You shall foreier in memories abide. When vexing problems threatened peace with fears, You have been ever willing to direct and guide. Not only to your knowledge gained From many sources far and near, But to the richness of your noble souls We, too, had access in our brief career. For all these bounties you have freely given We must in gratitude fore,er repay By following steadfastly those righteous paths Where you have led the way. ,A - ,V W ...YL. ,.. ,KH A.,
