Stevens English Orator Valedictorian Israel Rimer Salutatorian [ 97 ] Class History An examination of the past four years reveals that a lot of water has passed under the bridge since We, the class of 1939, in an excited and nervous state of mind, first climbed the steps to the High School. The opening weeks of school were trying ones for us as non-descript freshmen — weeks filled with our superior upperclassmen, taking full advantage of our inexperience, sending us to the Gym instead of General Science, College Physics instead of Civics. During our first two years we admired the upperclassmen, bore the brunt of all their classic jokes, and went on our sort of undistinguished way. Junior year found us closer to maturity and we lost no time in showing our increased powers. In our first act as a class we elected the following students as our class officers: President Vice-President Treasurer Secretary Lawrence Fortin Betty Butts Wallace Haley Joan Greene Under such capable leadership, with a unified class, and assisted by Mr. James J. Murray, our understanding class adviser, we set about to make our Junior Promenade an outstanding success, socially and financially. Few of us will ever forget the gym as it was, beautifully decorated in yellow and purple flowers, a virtual garden filled with happy couples, dancing to the rhythmical music of the “Hi-Hatters.” As Seniors, the leaders of the school, we have shouldered our responsibility and have come through with flying colors. We elected the following able stu- dents as our class officers: President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Lawrence Fortin Alice Dufault Joan Greene Robert Dolliver [ 98 ] Our Senior Dance will long remain a challange to classes to come. For this affair the gym was transformed into a riot of color with crepe paper streamers from every corner into an effective, gay, variegated ball in the center. The “Hi-Hatters” again played the swing music, fox-trots, and waltzes for the many graceful dancers. Our Spring was occupied by our most important undertaking — the Year- book, a yearbook which we hope our efforts will cause to emulate those of pre- vious classes. Although our graduation in June, our banquet and reception, occupied most of our time and thoughts, we realized a strong sentimental at- tachment for our school, a deep gratitude to our capable faculty, and a heart- felt appreciation for the kind efforts and untiring patience of Mr. Day our principal, Mr. Murray acting principal, and Mr. Dana, acting vice-principal in leading us through our difficulties. Standing on the threshold of a new period in our lives, we look back on our past four years as a never-to-be-forgotten ex- perience and bid “adieu” to Salem High School. CLASS OFFICERS Lawrence J. Fortin Joan P. Greene Robert C. Dolliver Alice T. Dufault Graduation, 1939, Salem Armory The Student Council OFFICERS President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Sergeant-at-arms Robert Lappin Marion Stiles Joan Greene Thomas Kilfoyle Wallace Haley The Student Council which has been in existence four years, in December, 1938 was reestablished at the request ot Mr. Murray, anxious to continue the policies of our Principal in his absence. In the short time that remained for active service, many things were accomplished. First, a Committee was appointed to increase the cleanliness of our school lunch room, and this it did very successfully. Secondly a Vocational Guidance Committee was formed to assist the students in choosing the work for which they were most interested. A series of lectures was conducted, with members of the various professions and occupations as speakers, and last of all, a Junior Citizenship League was organized with meetings in each home room on every other Thursday. It is very evident that the Student Council this year has achieved its purpose of making a more perfect school and creating a better understanding between teacher and pupil. Much credit is due to Mr. Fallon, member of the faculty, who has been of great assistance in helping the Council to maintain its high standard of service. 1 102 ] The Latin Club Consuls Barbara Call and Thomas Kilfoyle Praetor Joan Green Quaestor Wallace Haley Aediles William Potter, Chairman Miriam Hynes Evelyn Spiegel The Latin Club, which has functioned longer than any other organization in the Salem High School, was formed in 1913. Its main purpose is to increase the pupils’ interest in classical studies and to foster friendships among those who are interested in the classics. On the second Tuesday of each month the Latin Club holds its regular meet- ings. January 11, the Club members entertained the Beverly High School Latin Club at a tea in the Salem High School Auditorium. A successful auction was held February ninth and tenth in the High School Auditorium, and the annual informal dance, which was a decided success, was held March seventeenth in the gymnasium. As in other years the Latin Club of 1939 plans to make a substantial contri- bution to the Towne Scholarship Fund. 1 103 ] The Library Club President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Dorothy Brown Israel Rimer Evelyn Spiegel Thomas Kilfovle The basic purpose of the Library Club is to maintain the school library. With this object in mind, members of the Club spend their study periods in the library keeping both the room and the shelves in order. However the Club also indulges in social events, but uses the money it receives from dues and the profits of entertainments to supply the library with the latest magazines and news- papers. Among the affairs of the current season were an afternoon dance and several teas. It is a constant hope of the Library Club that a librarian will be selected to assist the students in their use of the school library. I 104] The Dramatic Club President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Ruth Pett John Quinn David Brown Selma Resnick The Dramatic Club is one of the oldest clubs at Salem High School. Its aim is to foster and develop the dramatic abilities of its members. This organization affords its members an excellent training in voice culture and body poise, through the medium of partaking in the presentation of well- known plays. The Dramatic Club also familiarizes its members with a large number of contemporary plays. This year the Dramatic Club produced as its major presentation the prize play of the year, “You Can’t Take It With You”, and much of the success of the winning play and the club’s activities has been due to the able and valued assistance of Miss Elizabeth Shea, Faculty Adviser, and Mr. Tellier. [ 105 ] Red Cross Club President Vice-President Secretaries Treasurer Jr. Red Cross Council Representative Beth Davidson Eileen MacTurk Libby Rogers and Muriel Constantine Madeline Olsson Louise Connors The Junior Red Cross Club, a member of the Salem Junior Red Cross Council, was organized in 1931. The membership which is limited to girls, is at present about fifty. The club calendar calls for two regular meetings a month, one on the second, the other on the fourth Tuesday of the month. Miss Louise E. Shannon is the club Adviser. The motto of the Red Cross, “I serve” is a key to the activities of the Club. For the past three years the club has held a fall dance, but this year the girls sold Christmas Cards to finance an annual Christmas Party at the High School for over thirty worthy children selected from the primary schools of the city. The Club has taken charge of the annual Junior Red Cross Roll Call at the High School and has assisted at the annual Roll Call Supper of the Senior Red Cross. In addition, the Club has made scrap books for the Children’s Ward at the Salem Hospital and tavors for the Hospital, the Bertram Home, and the Old Ladies, Home, at Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day, and Easter. Some proj- ect to promote international friendliness has been worked on each year. The Club entertained the officers of the Lynn English, Lynn Classical and Peabody High Schools at a recent Tea at which Miss Martha P. Ober spoke on the Braille system. The Club is also holding a standard course in First Aid with the assistance of the Senior Red Cross. Doctor Margaret D. Welch, the instructor, expects that thirty girls will be awarded certificates. The last meeting of the year is held at the annual picnic where election of officers takes place. [ 106 ] The Movie Club President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Rita L’Heureux Irene Gallant Alice Donovan Richard Boisvert One of the youngest and most aspiring organizations at Salem High School is the Movie Club. It was organized in 1935 by Edward J. McCabe of the faculty, who gathered together a group of students whom he felt would be interested in forming such a club. This year the Movie Club enjoyed a gala Christmas Party. A Christmas tree was purchased, and even Santa Claus made a personal appearance. The Movie Club is already affiliated with the Castle Films Corporation of Rockefeller Center and the Motion Picture Bureau of the New York Y.M.C.A. The Movie Club looks forward with hope to a successful future. [ 107 ] The Girls’ Athletic Club President Vice-Presidents Secretary Dorothy Mavrakos Ruth O’Neil Dorothy O’Hara Anna Awin Helen Pszenny Eleanor Stevens Treasurer Rita Snow The Girls’ Athletic Club, first formed in 1936, was this year reorganized under the guidance of Miss Jeanette Silverman, faculty adviser. In a short time the club has accomplished much, arousing greater interest in school sports and affording an opportunity for friendly competition among its members. Moreover, there have been many social affairs to bring enjoyment, the most colorful of these being the barn dance held in early December in the gymnasium. So it is that the group has found success in two distinct types of activity and has increased its membership accordingly. 1 108 ] The Camera Club Chairman Secretary Treasurer Faculty Adviser John Shatswell Jeannette Kramer Lorraine Smith Arthur W. Taylor This year, for the first time since its organization, in 1936, the Salem High School Camera Club has a paid membership. Sixty names are now on the active list. It has been possible to experiment with many different papers, and solutions for developing and fixing, the type of work being adapted to the ability of the individual student. The purchase of a fine enlarging machine has made that part of the work more interesting than ever. The club is indebted to the Eastman Kodak Company, for a series of ten lectures, one each month from September through May. Slides, films, and lecture material have been used with worthwhile results. These have covered all the modern trends in photography. A meeting with other school clubs will be held before school closes, and a healthy competitive spirit may result in an exhibition of amateur work. Each member has opportunity to carry on his hobby as far as he wishes, and have the results criticized. In that way, his progress is made to depend on his own initiative. 1 109 ] Baton Twirlers Leader Faculty Adviser Instructor Claire Jodoin Jeanette Silverman Ollie Ahearne The Baton Twirlers Club is one of the very active organizations of Salem High School. Active in the fact, that although we see the girls only at football games, they must practice all the year to be ready for the fall season. Football games would be certainly lacking in color and entertainment if our baton twirlers did not perform. Baton twirling is as helpful as it is enjoyable. It improves posture greatly, and instills a sense of rhythm and alertness. Madeline I.etarte has been selected as next year’s leader. 1 HOI The Commercial Club The Commercial Club is the largest student organization in the high school. Its aim is to bring the two upper commercial classes together for social and edu- cational purposes. It is the policy of the Club to honor the leading commercial student with a valuable gift of books at the graduation exercises each year. The Club also contributes in a limited financial way to various projects which are of interest to commercial students. This year the Club was successful in all of its undertakings. On December 8, 1938 the annual social party attracted the largest attendance of many years. A Valentine Dance was held February 3, 1939 and this too proved to be an out- standing success. The annual educational meeting which was held on March 23rd, was well attended. At this meeting the principal speaker stressed the value of a com- mercial training. On the whole, this school year was both enjoyable and profitable. Looking into the future, the club has high hopes for a continuance of its past successes. President Vice-President Treasurer Secretary Lawrence Fortin Frieda Dobrosielska Kenneth Dowst Alice Dufault 1 111 1 Year Book And now the third Salem High School Year Book! And well it should go on! In these few precious pages the Year Book Staff has gathered together all the material which is worthy to be held as memories. We have reproduced pictures and written selections about a short but exciting career in Salem High School. We have recreated one of the few important things in life, — a senior high school year. Immediately we decided to dedicate the Year Book to the members of the Faculty who are so ably led by our devoted principal, Mr. James F. Day and our more than helpful vice-principal, Mr. James J. Murray. Our last year has been darkened by the knowledge of our principal’s illness, and we fervently hope that he will soon be back at his favorite desk carrying on the fine prin- ciples and ideals of Salem High School. Mr. Murray not only devoted his time to our Year Book, but he also carried along the duty of acting-principal. It must be said that no such work as a Year Book could be successfully accomplished without the aid of a fine body of students. If in the distant future this Year Book will still be able to take you back to your happy high school days, then the work of Mr. Murray and the Year Book Staff was successful. Since that time it has reached high peaks of success in its editorials, class notes, various departments, and literary achievements. Much of the credit for this success is due to the untiring efforts of Miss A. Louise Barker, our literary adviser, Mr. James Cunningham, financial manager, and Mr. Festus S. Rousseau, art director. We deeply appreciate the time and energy they have so willingly given. To our successors we now, once again, pass the torch. It is our sincere wish that those who have the good fortune to study at Salem High School in coming years may benefit by the inspiration of this publication as we, the class of nineteen hundred thirty-nine, have benefited during our high school years. May they too, continue its high standard!
