He came from the largest city in Brazil called Sao Paulo. He arrived in Salem in February of 1988 and returned to Brazil in mid January of 1989. Renato was very fond of sports and played for the school’s soccer team. He also liked to go to school dances and friend’s parties on the weekends. He liked to write letters to his friends and family in Brazil, and was very active with photography. Neils Blom came from Vojens, Denmark through Rotary. He arrived in Salem on August 17,1988 and is looking for a departure date on July 20, 1989. He is a senior and will graduate with the senior class. He played on the school’s soccer team and tennis team. He enjoys biking and the “few” parties and dances in Salem. He likes the American schools because they are so much easier than in Denmark. He re- marks, “You don’t know how easy you've got it!” He is fond of the weather and classifies himself as a “couch potato.” One of his favorite luxuries is eating doughnuts, because they don’t have them back in Denmark. While traveling in USA, he’s seen Philadelphia, New York City, Washington D.C., and Niagara Falls. He loved them all, Ryoko Shiwojma is an AFS exchange student from Tokyo, Japan. She came to Salem in August of 1988 and will return in July of 1989. She enjoyed playing softball, going to basketball games, and going to school dances. She loves to paint and is member of the National Art Honor Society. She is fond of singing and was in the school choir. Her least favorite American food is peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches. Cristina Alvem is a Rotary exchange student. She came to Salem from Piracicaba, Brazil in January 1989 and will go back in January of 1990, She is fond of running and swimming. In Brazil, she was active in ballet and misses it terribly. She likes to go to the school dances and to go to parties with her friends. In her spare time she likes to read and take pictures. Her favorite subject in school is computers. She says, “The computer is your friend,” There are three seniors who will be going abroad in the summer and will return the following year in 1990. Beth Breckenridge leaves for Holland (Netherlands) late in July with AFS. Also with AFS is Heath- er McNeal. She leaves in August for a mid-European country. Leaving with Rotary is Julie Soyars. She is headed for a South American country. Renato likes to be close to his women. Neils gets chummy with friend Cassie while Deanna, from Poland, gets jealous. Neils tries to show off his manly body while missing the soccer ball. Ryoko gets annoyed when Fiona, from West Branch, and Tacco, from United laugh at her on AFS Day. On Friday, May 5, 1989, the juniors, seniors, and their dates traveled to the Maronite Center in Austintown for their 1989 Prom. The theme was Moonlight Masquerade” and the male servers wore black and white while the female servers wore multi-color shirts and masks. The music was provided by Mark French, a disc jockey from Hot FM 101. The theme song was “Hands to Heaven” so that we’ll be back together someday in honor of our senior classmate, Rob Wiggers. Everyone rocks to the beat from Mark French, Shawn and Wayne think that they’ve got the beat when Tonya has a different opinion, Tim is waiting for Tracey to just walk by without asking him to dance. Their destination was the boat called “The Majestic.’’ The bus ride took an hour and a half to reach Pittsburgh where the boat was at the dock waiting. The music was provided by the radio station 94. The boat traveled down the Ohio River and returned to Pittsburgh for our departure. Top left; Beth and Jim would rather get close to pose on the deck instead of staying warm inside. The selec- tions played for the competition were “Proud Mary, Heard It Through The Grapevine, a percussion ensemble enti- tled ‘Maryanne’ and California Girls Although the competition was the main reason for the trip, the band members also did quite a bit of sightseeing. The Theme: Christmas in the Alps The Effect: Great times and memories to last through the holiday season. Peace, Love, and Togetherness - It was back to the sixties for the MORP this year. On Friday, April 21, the girls and guys of Salem High took the theme seriously with many of them wearing bell-bottoms and tie-dyed shirts to name a few. Since MORP is backwards of PROM, the customs of MORP are backwards of the PROM. For instance, the girls ask the guys to go and sometimes the girls take them out for din- ner and pay for the ticket into the dance. During the MORP, a king and queen from each class are selected. All in all it is an enjoyable experience for all. Surprise, Jamie! Heather is having a good time! It serves the school and community through fund raisers and other pro- jects. Anyone willing to spend time helping in the school and community can be a member. The club meets every other week and has helped with the Amer- ican Red Cross Blood Bank, worked with the American Cancer Society and assisted in organizing the Salem Jubilee parade. Salem is the largest Key Club in its division and has been the home club of several Ohio District Key Club officers. The club plans to raise its financial status while providing services for the school. Key Club has sponsored two dances and held two concession stands to raise money. Enough money was raised to send a few members to the annual Key Club convention. At the convention the members will learn about Key Club on a statewide level. The funds are also used for the annual John Callahan Banquet. This ban- quet honors students with good grades. We all benefit from the good service of Key Club. LmiUUi.LL CUCE Trying to promote an understanding of the tests and holidays and comradery among German stu- dents is what advisor Frau Reed and the officers of German Club did this year. By planning events periodically, any student in German had the oppor- tunity to understand more about the German cus- toms. Then once a month, the Club gathers to decide what to do as a social event, most often correspond- ing to a holiday. One holiday German Club celebrat- ed this year, as well as years in the past, is Fasch- ings, Faschings, extending from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday, is noted for masks and fancy cos- tumes so when the Club celebrates faschings, all wear a mask, The German Club also had an Okto- berfest, collected a Thanksgiving basket for a needy family, went Christmas caroling to older German families in the area, and held a faschings party. A student from Germany will be an exchange student here in Salem for one month and will be a speaker for the German Club students. Nine German Club members will travel to Germany during Spring Break to experience things first hand. After their arrival home, these nine students will present a slide show to German Club members, sharing with them their memories. The Spanish Club, which originated in the late 1940’s, is open to all second, third, and fourth year students who are interest- ed in learning about other Spanish speak- ing countries and their respective cultures. The 1988-1989 members celebrated Christ- mas dinner at Don Poncho’s restaurant in Alliance, Ohio and a traditional spring ban- quet at Chi-Chi’s. In February, members also worked the concession stand at the last home basketball game. The club is under the direction of Spanish teacher, Mr. Monteleone and holds monthly meetings. Have you heard the cow- bells ringing at Salem sport- ing events? or seen the ex- citing picturesque hoops at the basketball and football games before the players enthusiastically “ripped” through them? Did you at- tend the Sweetheart Dance? All these things are made possible by Pep Club, Pep Club is a group orga- nized to promote spirit. The advisor is Mrs. Esposito and the group is composed of nine to twelve girls and guys, Pep Club also makes many of the banners and signs that are hanging around school. Pep Club makes cookies and goodie bags for the athletes. Pur- chasing a new crown for the Sweetheart Queen is an- other thing Pep Club did this year. On behalf of the student body, The Yearbook would like to thank Pep Club for all their spirit ac- tivities.
