For many years, she has taught her classes with an unbelievable amount of intensity. Even students who enter her classroom with little interest in biology eventually leave with a thorough understanding of the subject. Mrs. May has put a great amount of time into her lessons, hoping to give every one of her students a clear comprehen- sion of biology while adding spice” to an already interesting class. She cares about every student both in and out of school. Also, she has put a great deal of effort, time and money into Academic Challenge, a group of students who try to improve their knowl- edge of a variety of subjects by competing in many competitions. Mrs. Frances May has contributed a great amount of time in order to achieve excellence in her class- rooms, and the 1987 Quaker Yearbook is dedicated to her. On Wednesday evening. May 20, Mrs. Frances May was presented with the 1987 Teacher Of The Year Award. Mrs. May is a biology and advanced biology teacher at the high school, where she has taught for many years. Miss Frances Corso was born in Salem. She at- tended Salem St. Paul for elementary school and eventually graduated from Salem Senior High School. She initially attended Duquesne Clniversity in Pittsburgh, where she obtained a B.Ed. degree in the area of biology. She later went to Miami University, where she acquired a M.A.T. degree in botany. She began teaching at Allegheny High School in Pitts- burgh. After one year of teaching in Pennsylvania, she taught at David Anderson High School in Lisbon for five years. Then she came back to Salem, where she has been teaching to the present time. She lives with her husband, David, in New Spring- field. They do not have children, but instead house a variety of pets. Among our years of high school, our most difficult task was to achieve a successful Prom, After going through a few rough spots concerning money matters and theme, we eventually worked together to get the job done. The plans, choices, and decisions that needed to be made were not made by or for one person alone; It was those who cared enough to offer their time, ideas, and hard-work who were the representatives of the whole Junior student body. Many thanks to those interested juniors, parents, class officers, and advisors who collaborated and cooperated as one unit toward one goal. Hopefully this year’s highlight will be a pleasant memory for everyone. Each couple took part in the Grand March then danced the rest of the prom to the band Paradise, who played “Heaven in Your Eyes” in the memory of Lori Wilt. The prom committee gave away keychains which resembled theater tickets. Then, following the prom, most of the couples extended the evening fun by going to Pittsburgh to ride the Gateway Clipper and danced there to popular songs played by disc-jockey John Cline of B94, Pittsburgh. The exhausted couples, then came back to the High School at about 7:00 am the next day. They left late on a Friday evening (March 13), and arrived in the “Big Apple” early Saturday morning . Saturday, Sunday and Monday were filled with a busy schedule of sight- seeing that included visiting St, Patrick’s cathedral, the World Trade Center, the United Nations Building, Mama Leone’s Restaurant, a Broadway Theater to see “42nd Street”, the Statue of Liberty, Madison Square Gardens to see a hockey game, and to the NBC building for a tour. Then early Tuesday morning, the band began pre- paring for the big parade. The St. Patrick’s parade, one of the longest parades ever, promised over 1 million people to line 5th Avenue. The band had a very success- ful and fun trip, and everyone arrived home safely late Tuesday evening. The success of the trip became evi- dent on April 6th at the annual Band Banquet when director Jeff Jeckavitch announced that the band had placed 1st among all of the high school bands in the parade and 2nd overall. Congratulations to all of the band members on a job well done! . . . especially successful and enjoyable for all of those involved. While many groups improved on and continued regularly annual events it was a memorable year of new and exciting activities for groups such as TACT Academic Challenge, and the marching band. For many seniors, our senior year would not have been the same without TACT, Teens Against Chemical Taking. Through the dedication of Mr. and Mrs. Cozza, TACT became an organization in which a good time was guaranteed. The seniors expressed through their actions that teens do not need chemicals to have a great time. The ’86-’87 year for Academic Challenge was one of exciting competition. While the team proudly hosted the County Bowl, they exemplified their academic excel- lence in Wooster and Geneva College. SHS students excelled in areas other than academics, such as music, art, and photography. Receiving a first place rating among all participating marching bands in the 1987 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City, the “Pride of Salem” marching band displayed their talents and were rewarded for their year of hard work, of practice, and fund raising in preparation for the parade. As usual Salem students also received many awards at the local, state and national levels in the areas of art, photography, and music. Moreover, many groups performed annual and important functions that keep the student body involved and the school running smoothly. To provide students with some “culture”, AFS hosted the annual AFS day in May, and the Spanish and German Clubs participated in activities such as a Mexican Christmas Party and a celebration of “Karneval.” Student Council successfully planned and organized the Homecoming, King of Hearts, and Morp (along with the help of Interact) dances. Also, Pep Club performed the vital function of increasing school spirit. Students who were actively involved in any of the many activities at SHS during ’86-’87 will most likely have happy memories of a rewarding experience. Student council seems to be involved in some aspect of school life all year long. Year-round activities in- clude running the conces- sion stand after school and providing a calendar with seasonal decorations on the bulletin board across from the cafeteria. The group is also responsible for work- ing in the coat room during the basketball season. Student Council holds the responsibility of plan- ning the Homecoming, King of Hearts and Morp dances, too. Student Council showed its community spir- it through the donation of a Thanksgiving basket and the purchase and planting of a tree at the high school. Pep Club During the course of the 1986-87 school year, Salem Senior High Pep Club was highly active on try- ing to uphold the Salem Quaker spirit and pride. This was accom- plished through the enthusiasm of the Pepettes, the decorating of the School and Reilly Stadium, the various dances, and also the fund raisers that took place. The main purpose of the Pep Club is to keep high school spirit up to encourage the players participating on the dif- ferent extra-curricular events. This was certainly done by the high school spirited ’86-’87 Salem Se- nior High Pep Club. Interact was very active in community and school re- lated projects during the ’86 - ’87 season. The group was active in community service through assisting in Rotary Pancake Day, helping underprivi- ledged children at a Christ- mas party, ringing bells for the Salvation Army, and re- placing several trees in front of the high school. In- teract also enjoyed activi- ties such as working in the concession stand at basket- ball games, a Halloween party and hayride, and a spring trip to Cedar Point. 118 Row 1 (L to R): Brenda Ackelson, Tonya Cecil. Par- ticipating at a contest at Gene- va College in Pennsylvania, Salem members of the Geneva College Hi - Q Bowl Team ranked in the top third of all participating teams. The group also traveled to Wooster, Ohio, to compete in the Science Olympiad. While Rick Watkins placed first in the “designer genes” catego- ry, a group consisting of John Casey, Matt Cole, Rick Wat- kins, and Eric Gilbey placed third in the Science Bowl. Moreover, the success of Sa- lem's team in Wooster was also shown through Sean Righetti and Brian Gilbey’s third place ranking in the mea- surement category. This year was especially ex- citing for the Academic Chal- lenge team because of the fact that they hosted the County Bowl. Salem's team (consist- ing of John Casey, Rick Wat- kins, Brian Gilbey, and alter- nates Roxy Hostetler and Matt Cole) fared quite well in com- petition with a 5-win, 3-loss record. Under the leadership of Mrs. May and Mrs. Schwartz, Aca- demic Challenge is a group which proudly exemplifies the academic excellence of Salem High School students. TACT In its second year of existence TACT Teens Against Chemical Taking, has been a very successful organization. With the dedicated help from Frank and Mary Alice Cozza, the group of seniors has attempted to create an atmosphere which allows students to say “NO” to drugs and alcohol. At the same time, they (earn to have fun without using chemicats. Activities that TACT has participated in include parties titled “Goodbye to Summer,” “Masquerade and Hayride.” “Christmas Dance ’ “Valentine Day ’ “Spring Fling,” and a dance at the Elks Lodge for all interested juniors. Also, TACT members planned a trip to Cedar Point prior to graduation and TACT parents planned a graduation party weekend (including a dinner dance at the Golf Club, moon- light swim and pizza, camping, breakfast and a canoe trip) for all members. Various fund raisers included an “egg” sale, raking leaves, car washes, a bowl-a-thon, and the sale of TACT T- shirts. TACT seniors showed community involvement by col- lecting Christmas toys for the Salvation Army, Christmas caroling at nursing homes, and selling daffodils for the American Cancer Society. TACT also received numerous speaking invitations to inform the public about the purpose and activities of the group. Members spoke to several community organiza- tions, churches, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. They also took part in a “Teen Action Day” at the Southern Park Mall, Parent Student Teacher meetings, and gave a presen- tation at a Salem Board of Education meeting. Because of the sincere dedication of Mr, and Mrs. Cozza and the enthusiasm of TACT members, TACT has been one of the most active, enjoyable, and most successful organi- zations at SHS in 86-+87. Even though our wins and losses were the same as last year, both offense and defense showed improvement. Our seniors: Mark Apicella, Andy Brookes, Craig Bryant, Chris Eddinger, Tony Knight, Mark Pane- zott, Tarry Pidgeon, Mick Quinn, Sean Righetti, Ted Schuster, Doug White, Richard Wrask were a great help with so many years of experience. Even though we will lose experienced players there are many that have great potential. Congratula- tions to the players for showing such good sportsmanship throughout the season. Even though the freshman team did not do as well as predicted, ITn sure they learned a great deal during their season. With a record of nineteen wins and three losses. Salem made first in Conference standings with eight wins and no losses. The team beat East Palestine, a tough team ranked twelfth in the state. The volleyball team dethroned three undefeated teams: Beaver Season! Local, Wellsville, and East Palestine. After East Palestine’s de- feat. they were lowered to fourteenth place in the state. Boys Cross Country: Best Season Ever Cinder the second season of head coach Frank Parks, the boy ’s cross country team achieved its best season in Salem history. With senior co-captains: Bob Vitko, Mike McGrath, and John Casey leading the way, the Quakers finished with a 25-3 record. The team also captured the County title and for the first time ever, the M.V.C. championship. In post-season races at the district meet, the team ended up with fifth place. Just missing a spot at regionals by one point. However, sophomore Graham Parks made it to regional competition as an individual. Graham was also the team’s top runner this year, with a season best of 17:04. The all-county team was named with Mike O’Brien and Graham Parks making the first team. Mark Coalmer, John Casey, Matt Medford, and Mike McGrath all made the second team. The next few years look promising for the team with only three seniors graduating this year. 136 This Page (hr): The joy of winning! They also captured the title of M,V.C. champs and County champs. As a result of the team placing second at districts, they moved on to regionals. There they placed seventh out of thirteen teams. Leading the team was senior. Sue McKinney, who was team MVP. She was also voted Columbiana County Runner of the Year. McKinney set a new course record of 19:53 at the Lee Win golf course. The squad finished with sixteen wins versus only four losses, including an 11-1 record in the M.V.C. They shared the Conference title with Canfield, by beating their team in the final match. It was the Quaker’s first M.V.C. championship ever in golf. Another Salem first was reached when two senior golfers advanced to District Competition. Nick Citino narrowly missed advancing to the state finals after excellent play at districts. Nathan Wilson became only the second golfer to qualify for districts after succeeding in a sudden-death play-off at the sec- tionals. Both shot well for Salem all year long. They are: Lisa Marosher, Michelle Bruderly, Sue Patterson, Sharon Bakondy, Sally Johnson, and Becky Prickett. They will be missed. The top competitor of this year’s team was Lisa Marosher. She finished the season with an undefeated record. Lisa had an excellent season in the tennis circuit. Sue Patterson and Robin Penny earned a regional birth. Congratulations Robin and Sue. Good luck to next years team. Left to Right: Jay Mager, Joe McGrath, Eric Grieb, Willi Colbert, Mark Mueller, Mark Apicella, Jeff Swartz, Neil Heston, Kirk Mager, Boys Tennis Surges The Salem boys tennis team enjoyed a successful and unfor- getable 1987 season The team powered by departing seniors, presented a questionable record (5-15), but gained posture and showed plenty of grace on the court. The team, unlike uncon- scious previous years, hung in practically all the matches, only to see them finish on the wrong end of many one-point decisions. They showed plenty of promise and character and set examples of sportsmanship on the court. It will be tough, but the seniors have given the remaining underclassmen the examples to follow to beat the burden of holding down the ship for next year. The team proved to be moving in an upward direction by showing posture and dedication under first year coach Mr. Robert Sabo. There is nowhere to go but upward for the 1988 season. Their coach, George Spack, with a career record of 52 • 35, guided the team through their ’86 - ’87 season with his knowledge. With only one returning senior. Chip Null, the team had hard work ahead of them. Bill Kress, sophomore center, was a major contributor during some of the season, but was sidelined with an ankle injury. Other major contributors throughout the season were Bill Bryant, junior forward; Chuck Juliano, junior guard; and Ben Cope, junior forward. One of the primary goals for the team was, playing consistently for four quarters. Team, hats off to you! Considering the number of returning letterman, the team, over- all, learned quickly and they applied themselves, even in the toughest, situations. Good luck in the seasons to come. It was not that our varsity team was not talented or seasoned with experience, it was just that many games were close, and the other team had luck on their side. Our team had four seniors: Dina Hartman, Chris Kells, Kim Evans, and Chris Cosgrove. Two were returning starters. Many players were disappointed that with all the talent the team had, that did not prevail wins. The factor that decided many games was the desire to win. If the game is truly decided by how you play and not the overtime, then our girls are champs! This year’s reserves were led into battle by Coach Zeigler. Many of the girls believe he was satisfied with his first year of coaching. They know they were satisfied with Coach Zeigler. The reserves, after gaining confidence, began to pull together, and work as a team. Many of the games were also close. After the first five games, the girls put the fundamentals drilled into them by Coach Zeigler, and confidence to show what will be carried up to varsity level next season. Good luck, girls! Tony Knight had the longest discus toss for a Quaker for the last decade. Matt Medford hurdled himself into regional competition, Graham Parks also ran well. Paul Huzyak was the best area pole vaulter, qualifying for state competition and fin- ishing fifth. However, John Casey was perhaps Salem’s best track member this year. He broke the school's half-mile record, was the fastest member in two relays which he also broke two school records, barely missed winning districts in the half-mile, and at state competition, he finished in seventh in the half-mile in heavy competition. Senior _____Athletes_______________ During the 86 87 school year, sports were a big part of the Salem school year. Many seniors played big roles on their re- spective teams and below are a few of these outstanding individuals. Dina Hartman was a stand-out in both volley- ball and basketball. She also excelled during the track season. Chip Null and Rich Wrask were two bright spots during a very rough basketball schedule. They made crucial plays when they were needed the most. John Paul Casey II was the area’s best dis- tance runner during the track season. He also performed well in relays, and ran well in cross-country track. Lisa Maroscher finished her tennis career at Salem as one of the finest tennis players ever to be a Quaker. Her outstanding match re- cord is one of the area’s best ever. As each part of the book is read, different aspects of this school year come to life. I will take this time and thank some of those who made this year’s yearbook possible. First, Jostens Printing and Publishing and representative Mr. Terry Leek. Also, Mr. John Dennis Creer, Mr. Don Conser, and Mr. Matt Loudon provided countless pictures that helped fill many pages. Crestline Studios and Robinson Studios also provid- ed pictures in the underclassmen and sports sections. Mrs. Audrey Dohar and Mrs, Linda Schneider helped keep this year’s book running smoothly. A sometimes overlooked, but very important contributor to this year’s yearbook is the area businesses who bought ads. This money provided a major part of the funding of this year’s book. Also, the entire ’87 Yearbook Staff deserves a great deal of thanks for their hard work in order to make the ’87 Yearbook one of the area’s best. To all those who have been mentioned, as well as those who I may have forgotten, thank you for your help in making this yearbook. I would also like to thank this year’s senior class, for whom this book’s theme is centered upon. As each senior leaves SHS, he she will take many memories with them. Although each graduate will go their separate way into the world, a little bit of the Salem Class of ’87 will go with them. For all the special memories that we have shared, my big- gest “thank you” goes to the class of ’87. Brian Gilbey Editor-In-Chief 1987 Quaker Yearbook The We honor our high school. We sing of its praise. With courage united, its colors high are raised. Alma We all iove it dearly. Our Alma Mater true. We’ll cherish its memories. Our whole life thru.
