Mr. Turner Dedicated Teacher Of The Year Mr. Donald Turner is a very special teacher He has been the chemistry teacher here at the high school fQr seventeen years. Because of his knowledge of science he was chosen as the head of the science department. He knows his subject well and is one of the best-liked teachers at the high school. Mr, Turner was born May 15, 1946. He comes from a family of five children. He has three sisters and one brother. Mr. Turner is the third from the oldest in his family. He graduated from Brownsville High School, where he also played basketbail. He graduated from California State University in Pennsylvania with a Bachelors De- gree in Chemistry. He is the only one in his family to graduate from college. Mr. Turner has been married for seven years to his wife, Susan. Although they do not have any children, Mr. Turner finds many activities to keep him busy. He loves to work on cars in his spare time. He enjoys cooking Spanish rice, which is one of his favorite dishes; and obviously, he enjoys reading chemistry books. Mr. Turner also lectures during the summer at Kent State University- Salem. Mr. Turner used to wear suits when he began teaching in 1969, but he ruined many of his suits while working with the strong chemicals in class. Therefore, he changed his attire to the casual appearence that he has today. Mr. Turner is a very softhearted and kind individual. He knows his subject and can teach it very well. He is well liked and well respect- ed by his collegues and his students. He makes a possibly boring class fun and interesting. For these reasons and many others, the 1986 yearbook staff has dedicated him as teacher of the year. i' 3 Faculty You can only come In if you know the secret r- Robert Delane - Principal password. Lisa Esterly Chris Evanoff Kim Evans During high school, many students take tests that evalu- ate their ability to do college work. One of these is the PS AT. The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test measures developed verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities im- portant for academic performance in college. The test takes 1 hour and forty minutes to complete. It consists of sixty-five verbal questions and fifty mathematical ques- tions. The results consist of a verbal score, a mathematical score, and a selection index. The PSAT is a shortened form of the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Students can obtain an idea of their SAT scores by studying their PSAT results. The scores on this test can help one evaluate his her ability to do college work. It may also give one an idea towards a career, The National Merit Scholarship Program and Na- tional Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students require applicants to take this test in order to qualify for these programs. A person's scores are sent to his high school and the colleges of his choice. The PSAT is an important step towards a college education. The results allow a student to assess his abilities in his choice of career. a S' o a a a a a a a a a a o u a o a o Sharon Bakondy, hard at work. The Wind En- semble was under the direction of Dr. Daniel Dicicco, who Is also its founder. Among their repertoire were “Selections from Annie” and two of John Philip Sousa’s marches. When the ensemble had finished, Mr. Jeckavitch, who is an alumnus of I.U.P., was asked to direct the ensemble in “Pride of the Wolverines.” The concert was well performed and extremely ap- preciated. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel about this decision? We had a right to do what we did. Americans were involved. The bombings on Libya were wrong and right. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Khadafy has cooled, he was angry because his baby was killed. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Lib- erty. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? People who come from other countries appreciate it more than we do. We've had it all our lives. We know it means freedom. Space technology has greatly advanced in the past few years. The disaster of the Challenger Seven was a great shock. How do you feel about the events that led up to the explosion? Long range effects? The people who kept the technical problems quiet should be tried for negligence and loss of Jives. (Amy Yurkovich) Don't hurt me! I swear I'm not a spy! Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel about this decision? “We should worry about our own country and take care of our problems. Forget them, it's their problem. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Lib- erty. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? It represents freedom. We should keep it in good condition so it lasts.” (Scott Klosterman) “Who cares about Khadafy, I want that girl over there! 94 Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel about this decision? ! agree with the decision. If we don't do anything it will get out of control. We don't need any countries involved. I think it is great that we bombed Libya.” This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Lib- erty. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? 'The Statue of Liberty means peace and freedom. I think we always support France in wars because they gave it to us.,I also think everyone should put in a little money to help fix it up,” Space technology has greatly advanced in the past few years. The disaster of the Challenger Seven was a shock. How will this affect future space exploration? ”1 think it will help the space program. It will make them work harder to achieve their goals.” (Bill Hively) A r I . V ■tf JBi | l: %1 1 «k i i a % pe b; m . tiff W ■ V' m l 9 —f mrii Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel about this decision? ”1 think the Unites Sates did the right thing by taking action. Khadafy says we are the terrorists because we blow up civilians. He killed a lot of people in terrorists attacks. He could start World War III. I think our attacks on Libya were successful. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Lib- erty. What does the State of Liberty mean to you? I think it is good that they're fixing it up. It Is the symbol of America, People from foreign countries, like the Eastern block countries, appreciate the Statue of Liberty more than we do. We see it and think, Great! America! I can do what I want. Space technology. The disaster of the Challenger Seven, what is your oppinion? I think they were pushing too much for a schedule. Tragedies have happened in the past. Not too many people know about them. We ended up going to the moon, ! don’t think this latest tragedy will slow us down either. It will make them take more precautions, (Bill Burkey) Look at us! We can imitate Khadafy and Reagan.” Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel about this decision? “We acted at the wrong time. We should have waited. We needed to get more evidence before we bombed.” This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. What does the Statue of Lib- erty mean to you? “It is a symbol for what the United States stands for. (Freedom)” The disaster of the Challenger Seven was a shock. How has this affected future space exploration? “I think the space program should continue.” (Matt Medford) I say we go in and get 'em! Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel about this decision? “If they felt their action was necessary, then it’s alright. But I do not want to see it turn into a war. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? “The Statue of Liberty makes me feel proud that I am an American citizen. She brings our country the symbol of freedom. Who would want to live in a country that does not allow you to be what you want or to do what you want? The Statue of Liberty proves our freedom. For the immigrants that came to the United States, seeing her makes their dreams of freedom a reality.” {Missy Kerestes) How can you be hungry at a time like this? We have to figure our war plans.” Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to action. How do you feel about this decision? “I think it's about time Reagan did something to counteract terror- ist movements. The only problem I have is that I'll be in the Marines in September. J might end up in someplace like Libya. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Lib- erty. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? “Well, Ronald Reagan style, I think the Statue of Liberty deserves the new restoration. If it hadn't been done, a lot of foreigners would feel let down. The Statue represents America.'1 Space technology has greatly advanced in the past few years. The disaster of the Challenger Seven was a great shock. What are your reactions to this? “SPACE, the final frontier. The idea of sending citizens in the shuttle is a fantastic idea. A person could learn a lot from the experience. They would be able to tell other people about it. (Bill Dunn) “Take that' Khadafy!” Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel about this decision? “I think it is a good decision. Terrorism shouldn’t be put up with. The bombings are O.K. if no one gets injured. This year marks the 100th anniversity of the Statue of Liber- ty. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? “The Statue of Liberty means freedom. We should rebuild it be- cause it is a symbol of America. . (Missy Cross) This is what I think of Khadafy . . . boring, uninteresting and extremely dull!” Activities The Year Activities once again helped bring together Salem students, Quaker enthusiasm again surpassed fast year’s level with plenty to spare. Many of the activity groups were very active. The German Club had a bowling party and various other activities during the course of the school yean The Spanish Club again held their annual Christmas party. The IOE De- partment helped the community by providing Christmas presents and coloring books for area residents. The Journal- ism staff provided SHS with a year full of informative material. The National Art Honor Society made shirts for club members and had winners in area contests. Key Club members donated their time and energy to the Salvation Army to help feed and clothe the needy. The Microcomputer Programmer’s Group competed in the Salem Bring-Your-Own- Computer contest. The Olympics of the Mind teams fared well in competition. The Academic Challenge team also played well, tying for first place in the County Bowl. However, the 1985-86 school year may be best remembered for the beginning of the group TACT (teens against chemical taking). The group, headed by Mrs. Cozza, is intended to emphasize having fun without taking drugs. Salem students also played a part in non-school related activities, such as the blood drive, and Hands Across America. On May 20, seniors also took part in local government during Youth in Government Day. Salem High School showed Quaker spirit in their activities during the year. Sheri and Paul acting normal! Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel, about this decision? I think that terroism is an awful thing. Somebody had to take action. I wish it had not been the United States. Most of Europe chose not to back us. They want to stay out of it because they’re afraid. I think they will come around and see our point of view. Kbadafy is afraid to come to the U.S. That Is why he is'striking Europe. They are afraid of him because he has been labeled a madman. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Lib- erty. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? “It stands for peace, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. I have a stepmother from Canada. The Statue means more to her now that she is living in the U.S. it shows the world how we feel about our freedom. After the “big celebration , i think Americans will take it more seriously. They will consider it more of a monument than just a statue. (Beth Haschen) “Oh no, I’m not scared of Khadafy. My face is just frozen this way, Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel about this decision? How would you have handled the situation? “We had a right to attack because they were attacking U,S, citizens. Some of the bombs weren’t on target, ft is hard to hit targets at night. Libya had it coming to them. It is pretty bad that Europe didn’t support us. They should have done all they could. We had to show Khadafy we meant business. If our missions were completely successful, they would have killed Khadafy, if that happens, it will be like Germany. Someone will have to come in and take control of the people. I think terrorism can be stopped. They don’t have any right to do it, I don't understand why Khadafy is doing this. He should be treated like a criminal.” This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Lib- erty. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? “It is a symbol of freedom. Now that they are repairing it, it will mean a lot more. It will be a gold color again. It has been green for a while. It was a nice gift. It’s good that they are preserving it.” {Doug Grimm) My head is too big for one of Khadafy's funny hats. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Lib- erty. What does the Statue of Liberty mean to you? The Statue of Libery basically means hope and freedom. It gives the world something to look forward to. We take the Statue for granted like a lot of other things. Space technology has greatly advanced in the past few years. The disaster of the Challenger Seven was a shock. How do you feel about the events that led to the explosion? Long range affects? The Challenger should have been inspected more carefully. They were trying to meet a deadline too fast. They were more con- cerned about progress. I think the program should go on. Even though we lost lives, that is no reason to quit. I think that if the seven men were alive they would want it to continue. We shouldn’t be so conscientious of meeting deadlines. No one really thought of the danger. They got lazy. Why be alarmed by something that has never happened before?” (Rob Lee) “I know I put those hand grenades in here somewhere! Terrorism is an international problem. The United States has decided to take action. How do you feel about this decision? I feel we shoufd leave them alone. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Lib- erty. What does the Statue mean to you? Freedom! In a way it means justice. I want to see it, but I don't think about it a lot. I'm sure we loved it when we first got it. Now, it is just an everyday thing.” Space technology has greatly advanced in the past few years. The disaster of the Challenger Seven was a great shock. How do you feel towards the events that led to the explosion? Do you feel we are too competitive? I feel that the space program should have been a lot more careful in the testings. They were worried about progress. Personally, I care more about the people than the competition. (Tracy Abraham) “Look out! All eyes were on the seven girls chosen by the senior class of '86 as homecoming queen candidates. Their pride and anticipation showed as they entered Reilly Stadium in sports cars with their escorts. Serenaded by the SHS marching band, the candidates were escorted onto the the field. Finally, the announcement of Chris Shone as homecoming queen was met with the applause of the crowd. Chris proudly represents Salem High School and especially her senior class of '86, Congratulations to Chris (pictured to the left with escort Mike Ketohum) and all of the girls on the 1985-86 homecom- ing court. Hoi S.H.S. Sweethearts The seven sweetheart queen candidates became the focus of attention at a very special basketball half-time in January of 1986, All seven senior girls chosen by their class proved to be winners. Their smiles showed through as they were escorted arm in arm across the basketball court. This night of a lifetime turned out to be extra special for Julie Pasko, who was chosen by her senior classmates as the 1986 Sweetheart Queen. The students of SHS are proud of Julie (pictured to the right with her escort Jim Bakondy) and of all of the ’‘sweet- hearts” on the court. Our best wishes to Cathy, Kim, Amy, Melinda, Cindy, and Julie. Salem Football NB. 9-1 VARSITY FOOTBALL The varsity football team finished 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the MVC. Playing a very tough schedule, the Quakers lost to teams with a combined record of 40-10. The team won every game in which it as favored and also won 2 other games (West Branch and Girard) in which they were 23 and 17 point underdogs. Highlights of the season include a fan- tastic come-from-behind victory over Canfield in which the Quakers, down 23- 7, scored 16 unanswered points in the 4th quarter and then won it on Paul Bryant’s 33 yard field goal in Salem's first ever overtime football game. And in the year's finale, the Quakers got it into gear, de- stroying West Branch who was 5th in the state and unbeaten. School pride was at a peak as Salem beat those farmers as Coach Rottenborn would say. At the end of the season, Coach Rot- tenborn stepped down from his job as head coach. His tenure as coach may not have produced the greatest winning per- centage in Salem history, but he definitely mastered the most exciting, pass-orient- ed offense that Salem has ever seen. FOOTBALL M.V.P. Rich Huffman had a storybook year in 1985. Chosen a tri- captain by his team mates, tight end “Huff led the M.V.C. in receiving (35 catches for 542 yds. and 4 TD’s) and was a dominating defen- sive end. Postseason recognition includ- ed first-team selection to the AII-M.V.C. and Columbiana County Teams, and be- ing chosen to play in the Ohio North- South All-Star game. Rich also achieved a personal dream when offered a full schol- arship to Ohio State University. 1985 VARSITY FOOTBALL SCORES Home Opponent Aug. 36 Cleveland East 42 7 Sept. 6 Campbell 0 48 Sept 13 Youngstown East 0 45 Sept. 20 Girard 10 0 Sept. 27 Struthers 6 33 Oct. 4 Canfield 20 23 Oct. 12 Poland 26 7 Oct. 18 J.F.K. 16 34 Oct. 25 East Liverpool 8 14 Nov. 1 West Branch 17 7 1985 SALEM QUAKER FOOTBALL TEAM PICTURE: Row 1: (L-R) Troy Her, Mike Ketchum, Lee Good, Sean Kirkland, Rich Huffman, Rich Elias, Dan Solmen, Frank Bezon, Doug Morris. Girls Volleyball: A Sizzling 18-7 VOLLEYBALL ’85 Holding the best record Salem Volley- ball has ever had, 18-7, the varsity volley- ball team proved to be the area team to beat. Although plagued early in the sea- son with injuries, the Quakers soon were back on their feet” and ready to play ball. The seniors, (including Tracy Pizzino, Jenni Gow, and Team Captain, Cathy Francisco,) played a vital part in stabiliz- ing the team—providing experience, loy- alty, and dependability. The tall under- classwomen peaked at the net and made several teams eat the ball whole. And without the setters and backcourt players, this superb net play could not go on at all. Highlighting the regular season were the victories over arch-rivals West Branch and previously undefeated East Palestine. Rubbing it in even more, Salem literally six-packed” East Palestine again in the Salem Invitational. For the first time in Salem’s history, the girls outrightly won the tournament. The M.V.P. this year was Senior Cathy Francisco. Not only did she receive her 3rd Varsity Letter (in Volleyball alone), but was chosen first team All-county, All- area, and also a member of the All-star team for the Salem Invitational. Cathy was chosen as team captain which was a direct result of her leadership, all-around ability, and experience. She was truly the back bone of the team. Both the Varsity and JV teams outstrided the competition to win the county meet. Qualifying for first team all-county were Mike O'Brien, Grahm Parks, and Mike McCallister. Girls Take MVC And County Titles The Girls' Cross Country team finished an impressive year with an overall record of 19-1. The new head coach, Mr. Frank Parks, faced a young team; the only se- nior among the 13 girls was captain, Kim Ricker. Junior, Sue McKinney, who was named “Female Runner of the Year,11 had an excellent season, breaking the county record with her time of 20.05. The team was undefeated in the MVC and won the MVC meet. They also swept the county meet, with members Sue McKinney, Julie Settle, Stephanie Headland, Kim Ricker, Joanie Burchfield, Amy Winter, and Diana Huffman chosen for first team all-county. Yet another accomplishment this season was that the team placed 4th at the Dis- trict Meet at Malone College. This quali- fied them for Regional Competition. Contributing most heavily to the sev- eral narrow losses was the team’s inability to convert free throws (188 of 345=54.4%) and the loss of senior Rich Huffman for the season due to a shoulder injury. Most Valuable Player Rafael Vargas, the team’s most consistent player, led the Quakers in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, and free throws. A couple of highlights for the season were winning the F. E. Cope Relays and espe- cially the M.V.C. League Championship. Many of the girls on the team were also strong in areas of academic excellence and musical ability as well as talent on the track or field. That just shows that the girls strive for excellence in school and not just track. There were two school records broken this season. Sue McKinney broke the 3200 meter run record with a time of 12:24.5 The 3200 meter relay record was broken by the team of Sue McKinney, Erica Beagle, Kim Ricker, and Melin- da Wilms with a time of 10:03.4. The 3200 meter relay team that broke the record also advanced to the regional track meet. So Salem High School can be proud of the Quaker girls track and field team. Congratulations girls. The record is rath- er deceiving, considering six of the ten losses came from teams with a combined record of 59-1. Despite the fierce compe- tition, the girls shared second place honors with Struthers in the MVC and also became sectional champs—that is—they were one of the 64 teams left in the State. (Approximate 260 total) This year was basically a year in which to gain experience, now with that part taken care of the girls are looking forward to a suc- cessful future. M. V.P. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Dina Hartman has been chosen as the M.V.P. for the 1985- 86 Girls’ Basketball team. Dina averaged 14.7 points per game and she tied for top scorer in the M.V.C. She was chosen for the first team all area, which is very de- serving considering the hard work and dedication she puts forth all season. Dina was also chosen to be co-captain with Cathy Francisco. Matt Lesko, the only left hander on the team is the M.V.P. for the 1985-86 golf sea- son. Matt started rather slowly this year, but as the season pro- gressed he continued to improve. The con- stant improvement Matt made allowed him the honor of being chosen to the all M. V. C. team. Matt’s leadership qualities were one of the main reasons why Salem placed second, topped only by Canfield, in Mahoning Valley Conference play. Boys Track Shows Improvement BOYS TRACK The 1986 Boys Varsity Track Team un- der Head Coach Bing Newton, and Assis- tant Coaches Ralph Hoehn, and Lew Pitt- man. This was coach Pittman’s first year as an Assistant Coach. When asked what he thought of coaching he said, “I en- joyed working with these fine dedicated young men.” The team was led by senior captains: Steve Hoffmaster, Bob Monteleone, and Matt Settle. Along with Seniors: Doug Smith, Brad Capel, Rick Marra, and Leo Marple, they brought back the pride and tradition the teams of the past few years have lacked. The seniors showed the un- derclassmen that a committment to ex- cellence and hard work can bring the best out of everyone. The boy’s team had a record of 4-1. They received second place finishes in the F. E. Cope Relays, M.V.C., and Coun- ty Meets. The highlight of the year was the super effort that the whole team put forth in the County Meet. Congratulations on a super season guys. The seniors would like to wish next year’s team good luck in their season, especially, the Coun- ty and M.V.C. Meets. SCOREBOARD points Salem 51 F.E. Wrestlers WRESTLING This year's wrestling team was led by three very good and experienced seniors, they were tri-captains Dan Solmen, Troy Her, and Leo Marple. Through this leader- ship many underclassmen show good po- tential in being leaders in the coming years. The varsity wrestling team did very well throughout the season. Their season re- cord of 4-9-1 may not show it, but they did improve through all of their matches. The season was highlighted by a couple of commendable feats. The team took a second place finish in the E.O.W.L. tour- nament, and two wrestlers had qualified to wrestle in the Regionais. The two who qualified for Regionais were Dan Solmen, and Mike Lutz. Both of them took a third in districts to qualify for Regionais. Mike lost in the first round, but for a Junior he came a long way, making it farther than most other wrestlers. He also has another chance to go all the way next year, Dan took a sixth place in Regionais and came one match away from going to state. The M.V.P. for the 1985-86 wrestling team was Leo Marple. He was on the first team Eastern Ohio Wrestling League. Among his wins were first place at the E.O.W.L. tournament, and a first place at the Howland Tourna- ment. Leo's final record was 17-2-1. He also tied for the most pins award with Dan Solmen. CONGRATULATIONS LEO! We honor our high school, We sing of its praise. With courage united, Its colors high are raised. We all love it dearly, Our Alma Mater true. We’ll cherish its memories, Our whole life thru. Well cherish its memories, Our whole life thru. 196 This year's book will be a part of history. It is the only book that had a core group instead of one editor and one assistant-editor, in all of the Quaker's history. It is also one of the only books that had juniors instead of seniors in those positions. We got along together better than one could expect. One might think that we would have trouble getting decisions passed, that was true at times, but we worked them out. We could not have been able to get this book out without the invaluable help of many people. We would like to thank these people for the great amounts of support that they gave us. We would like to thank Mr. Steffan and all of the coaches for their help on the sports section. We would like to thank the photographers—Robinson's Studio, Crestline Studio, Mrs. Smith, and J,D.
