This year Secretary of State Sherrod Brown came to speak to all the seniors. Oh, and we can't forget Jim Eidel and the work he was going to do and didn't. 4 While waiting in the seemingly endless lunch lines, we talked about school spirit, the craze of the Cabbage Patch Dolls, and sleeping in study halls. 5 Mrs. Cozza (then, Miss Gause) is showing off her cute smile and vibrant energy as she poses here for her high school cheerleading squad at United Local. June 15, 1962 will always be cherished be- cause Frank Cozza and Mary Alice Gause said, ”1 do. on that date. Engaged! We're so happy! Mrs. Cozza is a family oriented person. (Front row, left to right)r Pat Zehentbauer, sister; Robert Gause. brother; Charles Gause, father; Gladys Gause, mother; Nancy Milliken, sisten Gary Milfiken, brother-in-law (Back row, left to right): Frank Zehentbauer, brother-in-law Frank Cozza, husband; Mrs, Cozza Ruth Gause, sister- in-laws James Gause, brother. Here are some more members of her family dur- ing the Christmas season, 1984. (Front, left to right): her 3 sons: Matthew, Frank, and Craig. Behind them are her in-laws, Ann and Ernie Cozza. 6 Dedicated Teacher Of The Year This year the staff decided to add a new page to the yearbook. Each year the year- book will be dedicated to a teacher who has taught for at least ten years, is involved in school and civic activities, and genuinely cares for the students. 1 am proud to an- nounce this year's deserving teacher: Mrs. Mary Alice Cozza. Mrs. Cozza is the fourth child of Charles and Gladys Gause. She and her two brothers and two sisters grew up in Hanoverton and graduated from United Local High School. She attended Kent State University and re- ceived her bachelor's degree in home eco- nomics education. In 1962, she married her high school sweetheart and became Mrs. Frank Cozza. Mr. and Mrs. Cozza have three sons: Craig (20), Matthew (19), and Frank W). Mrs. Cozza is very enthusistic, full of energy, and a very active lady. She has taught family living at Salem for 17 years. She is also in- volved in the drug intervention program, senior class advisor, a member of the Chemi- cal People Task Force, United Local PTO member. United Local Board of Education member, Vice-President of the Columbiana County Joint Vocational School Board of Edu- cation, and an active member of the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church. If she can find some free time, Mrs. Cozza enjoys snow skiing, biking, swimming, relax- ing under the sun, and spending time with her close-knit family. For your hard work, dedication, and caring for others, the (984 Quaker Yearbook Staff would like to say, thank-you. When Mrs. Cozza was asked, Do you like teaching? She replied, Definitely. She really enjoys the students, especially the seniors because they are mature enough to handle all topics. She also tries to help the students with any problems they may have. A truly remarkable person. 7 Graduation I At- Senior Personalities 10 FAVORITE TEACHERS: Mr. Turner and Miss Rafferty BEST DRESSED: Denise Beilis and Jansen Paumier LIFE 5 QUESTIONS 501 MOST UNDERSTANDING- Emily Liggett and Tim Smith MOST ATTRACTIVE: Tony Tranlham and Janice Ritchea MOST VERSATILE: Deb Swartz and Rocco Mango n MOST MUSICAL: Mike Reich and Joy Richesson CLASS CLOWNS: Amy Love and Glenn Martin 12 BEST DANCERS: Monica Clark and Sam McKinney 13 BEST HAIRDO: Connie Cushman and Kelly Daley BEST ACTOR ACTRESS: Tania Pshsniak and Rob Bailey FEMALE CLASS FLfRT: Alice Sar- MALE CLASS FLIRT; Keith Miller ginger MOST SPIRITED: Jamie Southern and Darrin Hartman A A CLASS PREPPIES: Erin Doyle and Tom Patterson 14 MOST ARTISTIC.- Lisa Martens and Jim Eidel Tania Pshsniak, Class President Mike Madison, Class Vice President Tania Pshsniak, Diane Lutz, Mike Madison, and Pam Stra- bafa began their planning for our Senior Class early in the year. Prom This year's Junior-Senior Prom was a big success. The juniors did a nice job in changing the cafeteria from dull and boring to a TROPICAL PARADISE . The fun and elegant evening began with dinner for most couples, the dance at the school, and ended early the next morning at the Akron University Student Center. 62 63 After Prom The 1984 AFTER PROM, held at Akron University, proved to be a good time for all Everyone enjoyed free pizza, pop, and potato chips provided by the Universi- ty. The students were treated to the movie, 'Trading Places”, bowling, pool, and video games. It was truly an evening to remember. Sophomore Officers Cathy Francisco, President Sue Allis, Vice-President As president of the sophomore class,! feel that this past year helped us to grow in knowledge and as people in general. I'm sure were all looking forward to the prom and our junior year here at Salem Senior High School. I hope that the students continue to support my efforts. Thanks for everything! SALEM HONOR SOCIETY The Journalism Staff this year is com- posed of sixteen juniors and seniors who are interested in the mass media. During the year, students learn of the many forms of communication ranging from newspapers to radio and television broadcasting, as well as the rights and responsibilities of a good journalist. In or- der to re-enforce their learning, the class is responsible for the production of the ''Quaker newspaper. Also, the class vis- ited the Salem News and had guest edito- rials published in that newspaper. John Creer, sports editor of the Salem News, spoke to the class in March in observance of Newspaper in Education week. Student Council is a panel of twenty-four representatives who have been elected by the student body. Its purpose is to make the school and its related activities more enjoyable. The council also per- forms many community services as a way to involve students in public affairs. Ac- tivities included the M.O.R.P.. the Home- coming Football Dance, Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, and the daily running of the concession stand. The Salem Honor Society, first called the Hi Tri of Salem High, was founded in 1945, The society is open to any junior or senior who has had all A s and B’s for the last two year. This year the members worked a concession stand and went on a hay- ride. Row h Mike Madison (Treasurer), Dan Blubaugh (Secretary), Pam Evans (Vice President), Joy Richesson (Presi- dent). Salem was well represented in the National Scho- lastic Art Contest this year, achieving a respect- able number of blue ribbons and dozens of hon- orable mentions. Pictured right are some of those winners. For over ten years, the German Club has been giving students an understanding of one of the most influential cultures in world history. This provides a supplement to the work done in the classroom. This year members attended the Ok- toberfest, held a hay-ride and bowling party, and participated in a German celebration which in- cluded authentic foods and masks. In order to raise money for their activities, the German Club ran a concession stand. They were responsible for the pep assemblies and posters which were used to urge our teams to victory so many times during the year. Pep Club was open this year to anyone wishing to join in and help. This included selling flowers for Homecoming, The Quaker Sams and Ladies are chosen at the beginning of football and basketball seasons and play the parts, in costume, at all of the respective games. Special thanks go to Ginger Twaddle, who volunteered her time to repair a damaged Quaker Sam head. It has been said that we can learn much about ourselves by watching others. This is true. Academic Challenge is open to anyone interested in supplementing their regular classroom work. Each week, members practice answering questions on a variety of subjects including history, geography, literature, science, music and art, as well as trivia and general knowledge. To put this practice to the test, they participate in a variety of academic competitions. The highlight of the year came when Sa- lem appeared on the television program Academic Challenge” out of Cleveland which aired on Christmas Eve. Salem's opponents were Champion High School and Avon Lake High School. Even though Salem led during the first two rounds, we could not pull off a victory. Another com- petition in which Salem participated was the Biology Olympics held at Slippery Rock College. Team members answered written and oral questions in ten categor- ies. Salem placed Xhh out of thirty teams, attaining a total of 349 points. The final competition of the year was held at East Liverpool High and was County Bowl, where five schools from Columbiana County answer toss-up and bonus ques- tions in order to see who is the best in the county. Winning first was East Liverpool, followed by Wellsville, United, Salem and Columbiana. ACADEMIC CHALLENGE T7n ? — • t Row t: Kara Flanery, Amy Kendall. Steve Rosar. Scott Smith, Nick Watkins. This year Salem students had the opportunity to see two, very popular musicals performed on the high school stage. One took viewers into the mystical, magical world of Middle Earth, while the other harnessed the audience into their sad- dles for a glimpse into life in the old West. Our first performance was, of course, the lively fantasy The Hobbit , written by Ruth Perry and based upon the J.R.R. Tolkien novel of the same name. For those who do not know, a hobbit is a small, human-like creature with a desire to live a serene, tranquil life, free of danger and adven- ture. They are also generally identified by the excessive amount of hair which grows on their toes. However, for Bilbo Baggins (portrayed by Scott Smith), life soon becomes far from peace- ful when he is visited by the wandering wizard Gandalf the Great (Charley Ickes) and his band of thirteen dwarves. (Due to casting difficulties, this number was reduced to ten.) Coerced into joining them. Bilbo leaves his home in order to lead an attack on the dragon Smaug who has taken over the dwarves' mountain. Even worse, the dragon has taken possession of all the trea- sure stored there, including the most fabled and precious gem of all—the Arkenstone. The play then proceeds to follow the journey of this brave band of warriors as they encounter terrible trolls, ghastly goblins, and evil efvest as well as battling giant spiders and the dragon itself. All ends well for the daring dwarves, and especially for Bilbo, as the courageous hobbit kills the drag- on and is rewarded with riches beyond imagina- tion, including the sacred Arkenstone. The pro- duction staff for this lively fable included Dave Dunn as stage manager; Diane Burkett and Lynn Frateschi were assistant stage managers; Nick Watkins worked props and Julie Reedy de- signed make-up. This performance was given for the elementary school students. Money raised went to the P.T.A. scholarship fund. Rogers and Hammerstein's smash production Oklahoma was our second play this year. In- termingling classic songs with expertly choreo- graphed dance routines, this comedy-musical portrays the romance of Curley (Scott Smith) and Laurey (Erin Doyle), two young adults trying to determine exactly how they feel about each otheri along with the on-again-off-again affair between the flirtatious Ado Annie (Tania Pshsniak) and her beau Will Parker (Jim Soyars). However, each romance has its problems. In the first case. Laurey is being pursued by the hired hand Jud Fry (Rick Huston) in hopes of winning her hand in marriage. Will also has some trouble in keeping his love's mind on him and not on the freedom-loving salesman Ali Hakim (Dave Ward). But, in the end, with the help of such songs as Oh, What a Beautiful Morning, The Surrey with the Fringe On Top, AH Er Nuthin', and Oklahoma, all turns out well for our two western couples. In recognition, special thanks go to the Woods III class for building the set and the Pit Band for supplying the music. Boys' Tennis The team started out slow, but won six in a row with a 7-5 record. Bad weather played a big part in the bad luck the team had in the beginning of the season. The rain caused lost practice time and also caused games to be postponed. Singles players seniors Don Finch and Tom Patterson and sophomore Doug Morris have played a large role in this year's success. Doubles players Don Yeasted, Steve Som- mers, Brad Roher, and Thad Smith have also done a lot in leading the team to victory. Other seniors on the team are first year players Tod Bosel and Gary Collins. Row I: (L-R) Neil Heston. Greg Roher, Dean Capel, Steve Rosar. Row It Doug Morris, John Omslaer. Under coach, Don Conser, the Quakers finished 1-1 in tournaments giving them an overall 7- 15 record. The girls had a somewhat disappointing season, but the many un- derclass varsity players gained valu- able experience. The team is losing five outstanding senior players. Kris Talbot, Pam Strabala, Tania Pshniak, Lori Schnader, and Lynette Robb all performed admirably for the Quakers. They will be missed. Quaker Vol Row I—Pam Strabala. The members of the Re- serve Team showed great promise and desire for competition on the varsity level next year. The only senior on the team was Steve Shears. Girls’ Cross Country This was the first year that Salem and Coach Mike Guappone had a complete girls' team. Their team finished an im- pressive season with an astounding UNDEFEATED RECORD! Linda Elias was the only senior girl, and Tracy Es- terly was the team's captain. The Quak- ers were led by 610 John Brecken- ridge and 6’5” Brad Jones, who along with speedster. Rich Herron, and crowd-igniting, Joe Noll, kept the Sa- lem fans on their feet. The team's greatest win came in the district semi- finals when they beat state power- house, Warren Western Reserve. The team had a unique quality that many other Salem teams did not possess. The closeness between the players and their coach and between themselves is a quality that should never be forgot- ten, The Quakers had six seniors who guided the team throughout the year. They were: John Breckenridge, Brian Toothman, Tim Harrington, Mike Madison, Rich Herron, and John Murphy. 138 ?rs Slam I Season Basketball . . . The team finished the season at 7-8, A very exciting season where most of the loses came by fewer than five points. The players advanced in their play throughout the season. With four fresh- men moved up to reserve, we started the season with very few players with exper- ience from the previous year. This fact made the advancement of this team all the more important because now there will be several players for reserve basket- ball next year. Provided, of course, they work hard on the fundamental skills nec- essary to succeed. But this team has a certain determination during the season that should help them prepare for the future seasons. 140 . . . Dina Hartman, Ginda Woods, Amy Goodbailet, Darla Huddleston, and Jill Bosei This year was a rebuilding year for the varsity team. Ginda Woods, with an outstanding season, was the only Senior leaving. Overall the season wasn't as good as expected, but that did not keep them from fighting in tournaments. With a hard loss to Boardman in their second tourna- ment game, this ended their season. There should be a special congratulation to Amy Good- ballet, for making first team all county; Cathy Fransico, making second team all county; and Ginda Woods, honorable metion all county. Girls’ JV’s Basketball The reserve's season was the best since coach Shane Franks started his coaching here. The overall sea- son was 14-6. With an entire team effort, reserves won first place in the M.V.C. This took a lot of desire and teamwork. The high was beat- ing Canfield twice. It was a team effort} no one person did all the work. Upon arriving in the area, he found approxi- mately 100 inhabitants, and a school that had been established a year earlier. Elisha Shooley had arrived in 1801 and built the first log cabin at a location near the railroad tracks on $. Lincoln, On April 30, 1806 (three years after Ohio had been admitted as the 17th state of the Union), Zadok Street and John Straughan founded our town, A corner stone was placed at the intersection of State St. and Ellsworth Ave. Seven streets were originally planned. Unfortu- nately, Zadok Street lived only sixteen months after the city was founded. A model replica of his log cabin home, made from the original wood, is on display at the Salem Historical Society. Homecoming, vaca- tions, and studying ses- sions, three events helped liven up this spring. SHS celebrated National Li- brary Week April 9-13. A balloon launch kicked off the week-long celebration. Teachers picked students who had improved during the year and the names of those students were put on tags fastened to the bal- loons. These were launched by library aides In the courtyard. Prizes were awarded to those who had returns on their tags. Stu- dents also had the opportu- nity to answer questions with the help of reference materials and could solve a code in the showcase. On April T6, the family liv- ing students became the proud parents of eggs. The eggs represented babies and the students were re- quired to keep baby with them at all times. The pro- ject was used to illustrate the responsibilities that are involved in having a child. Terms of Endearment won five Oscars, including best picture, best actress, and best supporting actor. Shirley MacLarne ( Terms ) and Rob- ert Duvall ( Tender Mercies ) received Oscars for best ac- tress and actor. Jack Nicholson ( Terms”) won best supporting actor, while Linda Hunt ( The Year of Living Dangerously”) won best supporting actress. Other movies that were popu- lar, but received no awards were Footloose . Against All Odds” and the television mov- ies The Day After” and Vi The Final Battle . Foreign affairs were of utmost importance in President Rea- gan's administration. The big event was his trip to mainland China. He also had to deal with difficulties in Russian relations. Russia shot down a Korean jet with severat U.5. passengers aboard and announced they wouldn’t participate in the Summer Olympics. Other Iron Curtain countries followed suit. El Salvador. 190 Linda Hunt and Shirley MacLaine. BEST WISHES TO OUR FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS This year Salem students befriended two very excep- tional people, each representing a diverse background of heritage and culture. The first was Carla Mencia, who came to our school through the efforts of AFS. Carla lives in Tegucigalpa, Hondouras where she re- sides with her parents and one sister. She is IS years old and, having taken one semester of college in Hon- douras, plans on an occupation in psychology. Our sec- ond exchange student was Junko Fukuda from Kure Hiroshima, Japan. Junko is 19 years old and has two brothers. She also has taken one semester of college in her homeland and is majoring in home economics. Thank-You This was a hectic year, but we pulled together and got the job done. I would like to thank my assistant editor, Cathy Finch, and the rest of the hard working staff. Steve Shears, head pho- tographer, receives much thanks along with the following people who supplied pictures? Rob Bailey, Cliff Eisner, Don Finch, Julie Jones, Kathy Lepping, Marilyn Paparodis, Lori Pep- pel, Penny Robertson, Fritz Schlueter, Mike Shaffer, Scott Shaffer, Jamie Southern, Tony Trantham, Denise Bei- lis. Jim Eidel, Mindy Fields, Darrin Heath, Mark Kowalczyk, Landy McCartney, Tom Patterson, Janice Ritchea, Alice Sarginger, Leslie Tet- low, Roger Tullis, Ginger Twaddle, and Nick Watkins. A great deal of grati- tude goes to Mr, Brayer, our Josten's representative, who answered all our questions. Mrs. Dohar, our advisor, deserves a lot of thanks, also. She did a lot of the paper work and general morale boosting. As the pages went to Josten's Publish- ing Company, I was pleased with the work the staff had done. I hope it will bring back many pleasant memories of the '83-'84 school year. 192 Looking Ahead . . . To put the future in perspec- tive we need to look at the memories of our high school years. While getting pictures taken and ordering announce- ments the seniors were re- minded of their future plans such as a higher education, working, or marriage. We all strengthened relation- ships with friends, tried to learn in classes, did experi- ments in labs, and the football team won the Warrior Sam Trophy. 193 To The Future Michael Jackson made the news this year when his hair caught on fire during a Pepsi commercial, and he won eight Grammys this year. Politics had a major role this year. Walter Mondale was the projected presidential can- didate to oppose President Reagan, but Sena- tor Gary Hart had won surprising victories in New England primaries as this went to the publisher and John Glenn and Rev. Jesse Jackson had not done well We’ll have to wait until November to determine who will hold the future of the United States. Remember the snowstorm that hit Salem on Monday, February 27, and school was can- celed for three days? Rosalyn Sumners. Olympic ice skater, won the medal that brought the U.S. Olympic Team's total of medals to eight. 194 195 The end of the year finally ar- rived and so has the end ot this yearbook. The pictures have been taken and the school books have been put away, the seniors can relax and look towards their future. The underclassmen can look forward to a few more years at good old SHS. We honor our high school. We sing of its praise. With courage united Its colors high are raised. We all love it dearly, Our Alma Mater true. We'll cherish its memories Our whole life thru. We'll cherish its memories Our whole life thru. ----Barbara Butler Greene 196
