Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1983 volume:

CLASSES The main purpose of our life at Salem High School. Day after day, week after week, the same classes, same subjects, same order. How we go through these classes, though, varies from day to day. Some days interested, some days bored to tears . . , 2 .. endless study halls . . . home- work . , . fun . . . paying more attention to the people in the hall . . , helping each other . . a test TODAY?! FRIENDS The most common characteristic of Salem and any High School. At every event, in every hall, in every class, one will find a circle of friends . ♦ . 4 ON THE JOB ... never seems to be enough hours in the day. Persistantly on the job trying to finish homework, practice, work and still have enough time to sleep. Classes.«. band camp... rings . , . working the con- cession stand... study hall ... homework... practice . .. lectures ... bonfires ... 8 I BUSINESS AS USUAL ... all things which always repeat. Whether it be from day to day, week to week, season to season, year to year, seems they've been around forever, and will re- main just as long. I! 9 PEOPLE Although the events stay the same, the people are constantly changing. Every year—new faces, personalities. Each allowed their own spot for four years when they become destined to fade away from memory . . . 10 11 ers FACES Just as every person is different, so is every face different. Not just in size and shape, but changing every moment displaying the thoughts of each indi- vidual. 12 r .. , different shapes . .. different sizes . . . some happy ., . some sad ... all quite different... but still, all the same EXPRESSIONS ... With the differing faces, are the different expressions. An expression is the simplest and most natural way of show- ing emotion. Each expression reflecting the deepest feelings of it's owner. 15 LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT! 16 SENIORS SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS—Stand- ing: Lisa Crosser, Vice President; Sit- ting: Kelly Finch, Treasurer; Bill Jelen, President; Laura Hutton, Secretary. As the year draws to a close, the time draws near when we must all turn the page of these four years and continue our lives in our own separate ways. Although we may be separated physically, let us never forget the memories and friendships that were made here at SHS. On behalf of the class, I'd like to thank all the advisors, par- ents, teachers, and citizens who helped our class during the past four years. From the first day of Freshman Orientation to graduation, they have been in- valuable. Sincerely, BILL JELEN, President Class of '83 THANK-YOU! THANK-YOU! THANK-YOU! The color in this section was provided through the extreme generosity of the 1981-82 After From Committee, The Class of 83 extends it sincere gratitude for their gift. Not the award winner, or the MVC first team selection, or the state champi- on, or the recordbreaker, but the INDIVIDUAL ATHLETE. The athlete who endures grueling prac- tices, pulled muscles, sprained an- kles, and the all over body aches and pains. This is the athlete who doesn’t do this for the glory or the spotlight, but does it for the love and support of the game. This is the ath- lete that makes the team and is al- ways in shape ready to play if and when needed. Covering the sports this year, I had a chance to see this athlete in action. I saw the football player work just as hard as their teammates during practice and later starred on the sidelines during a game. This athlete did not just stay on the side- lines but cheered their fellow team- mates with as much desire and en- thusiasm to win as if they were actu- ally out there playing in the game. I saw the basketball player run end- less line drills and watch their team take the MVC title from the bench and, yet, hold equal pride in the game played. This athlete is the heart and soul of every team at Sa- lem. They carry with them the pride and endurance that is a tradition at Salem High School which makes each of us proud to be a part of it. I just wanted to take the time to rec- ognize this athlete on every Salem Team, and to let them know how grateful and proud we are of their support and effort. The team also lost its only tournament game to Austintown Fitch, The highlight of the season was a twi- night double header sweep of Canton McKinley. The mediocrity of this season could have been at- tributed to the inexperience of the team. The team had only five sen- iors which will be missed next year. The rest of the team consist- ed of ten juniors and three sopho- mores. This team, led by Manager Jim Lantz, played competively in every game. Mr. Lantz was assist- ed by Gary Dermotta and Donnie Isaacs, Although the baseball team had a disappointing season this year, next year's team will be looking for bigger and better things. 96 CROSS COUNTRY Once again the cross country team finished with an outstanding record, as is the tradition for the Quakers with a 217-48 record for the past 16 years. While President Reagan fought to balance the bud- get, unemployment lines grew. In- creased gasoline taxes brought a truckers’ strike which threatened to cut the area off from grocery items. While the National Football League suffered from an eight week players' strike, the newly formed United States Football League pros- pered. Also prospering were the Sa- lem Quaker Gridders, who posted a 7-2-1 record. Salem student. Bob McClellan, gained recognition by becoming the first Salem student to be named Alli- ance Vocational King, and Salem Homecoming Queen, Lisa Grosser, and escort, Jake Sell, were area win- ners in Taco Bell’s Helping Hearts contest. The Salem High Marching Band excelled once again this year, per- forming in New York City's Annual St Patrick’s Day Parade, and Salem became host to another band—The Michael Stanley Band, who per- formed a concert in the high school gym in the fall. 1982 was the year for movies, with blockbusters such as, Tootsie, Pol- tergeist, and E.T., all of which were beaten out in the Oscars by Ghandi. Entertainment at Salem High School featured Neil Simon's “I Ought to Be in Pictures”, starring Todd Lepley, Diane Gordan, and Diane Burkett. 162 COMMUNITY TABLE OF ADVERTISERS ARA ....................................168 Arbaugh, Pearce, Greenisen .............169 Argabrite Realty .......................181 Automotive Parts Warehouse ............ 184 Beall Battery ........................ 188 Bonfert's Beauty Shop ................. 179 Brag Refrigeration .................... 184 Brown's Amoco ......................... 180 Bruce R.
