Fellow classmates, As this high school era for eaco of us draws to a close, we have a lot for which we can be grateful. The memories of the past four years are very precious. No other experience will be the same as attending Salem athletic events or going to the Junior Senior Prom. The accomplishments that each one of has done has built a sense of pride that this entire class can feel. We have been a long way .from the state wrestling tournament to Academic Challenge. We must not forget the friendships we have made and strenghtened. Many of us will go different ways, but true friendships will never be separated. I could'nt possibly sum up everything about this class in these few words, but each of you knows what it has been like as a part of the “Class of 1981.” I sincerely wish each of you Good Luck Todd 24 Allen Raymond Abrams David Allen Abrams Amy Sue Adams Brenda Sue Alesi Winifred Mae Allison Brooke Anderson Thomas William Andrason Tammy Lee Bailey Robert Stephen Bakondy Charlotte Mary Jane Barcey David Matthew Barrett Helen Mildred Barrett 25 William Joseph Beer Jane Marie Bell Kim Drederick Bell Lori Ann Blackburn Ronald Dean Blackburn Daniel MacDonald Boehm Bonnie Diana Bowker Kathleen Julie Bowser Michelle Renee Breault Kevin Wayne Burke Peggy Ann Carlisle Robert Carl Campf Quint Allen Bryan Lori Ann Carlarellio 26 Karen Lynn Citino Douglas Howard Covert Mark Stephen Crofcheck Cheryl Lee Chaffin Jeri Dianne Chandler Diane Carol Chappell D bra Kay Culp Micheal David Jeffrey Scott Cushman Cunningham 27 Brad Lee Dailey Micheal James Daniels Scott Allan Darner Douglas Lloyd Davidson Christina Poland Dawes Teri Ann Dean Diane Marie Decrow Spephen Marshall DeVan James Glass Dickey John Baird Dickey Christina Marie Doyle Richard Dee Edgerton John Eric Ehrhart Carol Lynn Evancho Laurie Jo Fisher David Sean Fitch 28 Marianne Foreman Stacy France Vicky Lynn Gilby Kim Allison Gitcher Gary Allan Goddard Jody Sue Gorby Katherine Anthonete Gorenc Robert Martin Gow Rebecca Ann Grimm Ronald Andrew Grimstad 29 Bjorn Ola Handburg Lars Ola Fredrik Hannson Keith Alan Guiler Glenda Jean Gudat Amy Louise Harp Julie Anne Harrington Lisa Ellen Hart Dean Matthew Heath Charles Curtis Henderson Craig Alan Hepler Leanard Hileman, Jr. 30 Robert Edward Lyn Lorraine Ickes Hutcheson II Sherri Lynn Irey James William Johnson Margret Rose Julian V Angela Grace Kaufman Kellee Lyn Karlis Marcia Grace Keeler Diana Bernice Kelly i Micheal Charles Kelly 31 Shellee Sue Kloos Penny Sue Lemmon Lynn Beth Lofland Robert Kirk Lowdermilk Randy Ludt Robert Lewis Kuhns Christine Marie Leyman Howard Hugh Loudan Richard Keith Lutch Sherry Marie Kovach Tina Marie Lewis Leslie Fay Lossick Randy Lester Laney David James Linton Lawerence Richard Lottman, Jr. f j[ 1 mu Steven Joseph Maenz 32 Linda Marie Marten V I Helen Ann McClish Stephen George Mehno Anthony Gary Martin ell i Douglas Patrick McCollum Charlotte Kay Messenger Raymond Louis Mariinelli Donald Paul McCoy Victoria Jean Metzgar William Edward Mattix Micheal Shawn McDevitt Jeffrey David Miller Marcilee Jean Moffett 33 Kimberly Marie Mohr John Newton Mosher Pamela Kay Moore Davie Allen Mowrey % Diane Lynn Morey Timothy John Murphy Beth Larue Morrison Robin Elizabeth Nannah David Kent Nolan William James Oldcorn Todd Douglas Olson Timothy Lozier Oriole 34 Marylou Concetta Perry Patricia Lynn Pitts Naoma Lea Pregibon Alan Duer Price Mark Stephen Pridon Tamara L. Only through the co-operation of the different committees and the individual hard work of each committee did we attain completion of this project. The officers of the class appre- ciate the hard work of all who helped. Overall the year was a great success as we accomplished most of the things we set out to do, such as the three dances, the two concession stands, and the candy sales we held to raise money. I feel that I speak for the entire class when I say that we look forward to being seniors. One of the highlights was the purchase of class rings. Thanks to Mr. Kunar and Mr. Moncheck, our class advisors, and the other officers, the sale went smoothly. We've had fun and worked hard in two concession stands and had a very successful candy sale. These profits will go toward next year's Junior-Senior Prom. Our class has been active in sports, drama, and mu- sic, as well as social and academic clubs. We had a good time and it was a great year. Al- though the wins were few, there were a couple bright spots for the Quakers. Dave Yeagley and Chris Firestone posted 15-2 and 12-4 season records, re- spectively. These two men also are the first boys tennis duo from Salem to win a sectional title. Also, Dave Horning, a junior, showed much improvement and will be looked for in the future. In addition, the Quaker golfers were the first Salem squad ever to play in the District Tournaments, Leading the squad was a junior, Jer- emy Rousseau. Rousseau averaged an impressive 39 stroke tally throughout the regular season before shooting a 72 and a 71 in the tournaments. Thanking the play of Rousseau was Swedish ex- change-student, Fred Hansson. Hans- son proved his value to the team as he averaged 41 in regular season action. Both Rousseau and Hansson were named to the All-County team while Rousseau received MVC honors. 173 Row one (1. to r.): Lonnie Linam, Dave Barrett, Mark Slocum, Dennis Twaddle, Brad Klosterman, Allan Quinn, Mark Riffee. With an overall record of 12-5, the team was second in the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League. The squad's league record was five wins and one loss. The team also copped second place honors in the Salem Invitational Tournament and the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Tournament. While remaining a solid team, there were many individuals standouts on the squad. All-County selections were Mark Slocum, Dave Barrett, Rob Kauf- man, and State Champion Kirk Low- dermilk. Receiving All-League honors were Slocum, Mark Riffee, Brian Da- vidson, and Lowdermilk. The team also had four wrestlers qualify for the Districts. They were Slocum, Riffee, Davidson, and Lowdermilk. Five Seniors played vital roles in Sa- lem's successful season. Each posted a winning record. 174 Freshman Wrestling HEAD COACH: JOHN McKEE RECORD: 3-3-1 175 Row one (1. to r.J: Bret Chaffin, David Ward, Craig Drzal, Jim Kataro, Jamie Solmen, Brad Wood, Jay Watterson, Dave Moore. Division Going down to Columbus as the first person ever to represent Salem in the state wrestling tournament was a great honor, but I had no idea that I was going to be the State Champion. Everybody kept on asking me if I felt any pressure, but I was happy I made it down there. After it was all over and I won all four of my matches, I did not realize what I had done until I walked onto the victory stand. On the top spot I looked around, seeing all the people, and not until then did I realize how big St. John’s Arena really was. How lucky I was to be standing there. Although the finishing below .500, the team improved greatly on last year’s record. The season was filled with bad hops, misplayed balls, and errant throws. While the record was deceiv- ing, a good time was had by many of the players. Seven seniors contributed greatly to this year’s team. They were Buddy Wood, Kirk Lowdermilk, Bill Oldcorn, Scott Darner, Mike Votaw, Scott Slocum, and Rick Zubaty. Wood was selected to the 1st Team MVC All- Star Team. 178 1981 Quaker Reserve Baseball HEAD COACH: JERRY BEILING RECORD: 7-6 The Reserve baseball team, under Coach Jerry Beiling, managed to climb one notch above 500 by ending the season with 7 wins and 6 losses The reserve team had some big wins in- cluding Austintown and Carrollton. Against Fitch, the Quakers came up with 4 runs in the seventh inning to win. Another of coach Beiling’s “memorable moments” came against Carrollton. Salem exploded for ten runs in one inning to wrap up the game. While the 7-6 record does not suggest it, the Salem baseball program should be in for some excellent seasons in the near future. (The Quaker Staff Apologizes for the lack of a reserve picture.) 179 1 1 The Quaker staff apologizes for the lack of a photo for the fall sports awards banquet. This year the job of advisor fell upon the shoulders of Mr. Mucci. This was a particularly hard job because this was his first year in this position. With advice from Mr. Esposito, the former advisor for many years, Mr. Mucci was able to give the advice that was so critical in the production of this publication. Many times the work load fell on the advisor, but as the job is to be handled, he would delegate the work back upon the staff. He was a referee in many of the small arguments that did arise, and he could always come up with a comment to change our anger into laughter. A great amount of appreciation goes out to Mr. Mucci for a job well done. The 1981 Staff 197 Yearbook Staff Assistant Editor: Linda Martens The job of an assistant editor is to stay in close contact with the editor and advisor. She must assist the editor in his endeavors to complete each deadline and she is there to correct and help in the reviewing of the pages for a deadline. Because of the advice of the assistant editor, the editors job seems a much less lonely one. Editor and Chief: Mark Willis The job of an editor is to oversee all of the work done by the staff. The editor must work with each of the staff members individually and he must also com- bine forces into a group effort. The staff members are the pieces, and the editor is the glue. It is the job of the editor to ensure the publishing company that all the deadlines are being met. He must work in close con- tact with the yearbook adviser and together they make the important decisions that must be made ev- ery day. His right hand person is, of course, the assis- tant editor. 198 199 Missy Magyros, Activities co-editor Roseanne Allison, Underclass editor Kathy Gorenc, Teachers Joanna Totani, Teachers Barb Wolfgang, Achievements Julie Gibson, Photographer % 201 Karen Cintino, Business manager Keith Schrode, Index Co-editor Pam Moore, Business manager Laura Me Cabe, Index Co-editor Not pictured: Beth Hippley, girls sports The following people have contributed pictures for the yearbook: Gwyn Rousseau, Beth Paparodis, Gary Goddard, Melanie Parker, Deb Monteleone, Chris Stamp, Jeremy Rousseau, Cheri Galchick, Steve Pridon, Karen Sullivan, Marylou Perry, Marrianne Foreman, Don McCoy 202 Ford Lincoln Mercury Uxjoon UxjDon UxDon Uxjoon Uxjoon Uxjoon Continental Drive Salem, Ohio Phone: 322-0031 204 BQP STEAKHOUSE State St. Salem, Ohio SELL’S ASHLAND SERVICE AAA 7:00-7:00 Sat. Dardos Torti, M.D., Inc. A lot of work goes into the publication of a yearbook. This year's sales totaled about 700 books. That is not bad, considering that this is the first year the books were sold seperately from the association ticket. Because of this change, the cost of the book was increased to $13.00. The total cost of this year's yearbook totaled between $12,000.00 and 13,000.00. Although we did raise this much money by selling adds and selling books to the studentbody, this did not leave us enough money to provide the book with color. Our original plans called for color, but with today's prices, it was just out of reach. Never the less, we think we made up for the absence in color in many other sections. We used a new type of paper, SHADOW WEAVE, which is both stronger and produces less glare. We put a lot of work into the cover and used a very subtle theme of Old English. Special thanks goes to our Yearbook representative, Ken Brayer, our photographer, Mr. Robinson, our graduation photographer, Mr. Bob Senn, and the whole staff at the Jostens Yearbook production plant. Those are just some of the behind the scenes people who have made this yearbook a success, and there are many more who have not been mentioned. Thanks goes to all and this year's staff takes great pride in this publication.
