Instruction in this program includes all subjects related to the clerical field. Skills are developed in typewriting, fil- ing, adding machine opera- tion, and accounting. Basic skills in English and business mathematics will be reviewed and reinforced. It is not all work, we go on field trips and we have a busi- ness luncheon. We also have a club where we do different projects to raise money. This year we sold stuffed animals and cheese. Learning the skills in the clerical field is a fascinating experience for anyone inter- ested in office work. The skills we learn are a prepara- tion opportunity that is in- teresting and very useful. I . . LEARNING A CAREER Intensive Office Education Sen- ior Clerical is the second year o£ a two-year program which is designed for students who have developed some skill in typewriting and have had some background in basic business in forma ti on. After a slow start at 1-4, the Quakers turned things around and had a successful second half of the season winning four of the last five games. In the second half of the season they were only defeated by undefeated state ranked Warren JFK. The Salem - West Branch game was a victory for the Quakers, West Branch was left scoreless and the Mighty Quakers crossed the goal three times: final score, 21-0. This was the first year for Salem football to be in the MVC, and the team accomplished a third place finish. Salem football players gained many honors on the MVC team. The gridiron will retire eleven fine senior athletes, but a successful season is expected next year with many return- ing letterwinners. The John Cabas Invitational proved to be a good start for the Quakers as they captured first place honors. The Quakers continued to win un- til their worst defeat of the season by a margin of 25 points to the talented Pitch cagers. After this loss Salem experienced times of ups and downs throughout the re- mainder of the season. Freshmen teams are a building block for the future varsity teams. With the records these teams earned, the success of the fu- ture does look promising. This year could be called the year of bad luck for the Quakers because of the many injuries which happened during the season. With the occurring injuries, the Quakers were forced to regroup for the majority of the matches. Even with the hardships encountered, the hard work, dedication, and starving did bring success. The Quakers placed third in the East Liverpool tournament and second in the Salem tournament. When the State tournament time arrived, Salem was once again successful. Randy Miller, Dave Flood, Denny Ulrich, and Dave Barrett qualified for action at the district level. The many hours of hard work and practice employed by Coach Craig Readshaw paid off as the Salem girls’ basketball team ran their record to 19-0 before losing the final game of the regular season. A combination of a well-balanced offense, a devastating press, and excellent bench depth decimated many of the Quakers’ opponents. Sparkling performances, especially by Tammy Bailey (All-State Special Mention), Diane Ward, and Lois Miller, provided thrills in several come- from-behind victories including games with Louisville, Warren Harding, and archrival Canfield. Seniors Jill Zocolo, Sue Maher, Denise Wood, Anne Jones, Jeanne Kennedy, and Linda Faieta were instrumental in leading the team down a successful tournament trail. Although gaining one of the toughest draws in tournament action, the Quakers played inspired, hard-nosed ball and defeated Harding, Fitch, and finally Cardinal Mooney in overtime to garner the District Cham- pionship and the coveted Sweet 16. ” In the first regional game with Canton Central Catholic, the Quakers, although losing several starters due to injuries and fouls, rallied from way behind in an almost miracle finish to win by one point. Their next game was then lost to a powerful Cleveland Shaw team. The 79- 80 Lady Quakers established Salem as a powerhouse in girls’ basketball. It appears that future teams will continue in this tradition as the J.V. team also racked up an impressive record this year under the coaching of Miss Janet Woolf. Ask For Free Estimates i? mi _ p-r-. n rn pj .rT 1 am pm Jiutm i im I'ira One of our most important divisions of the Lyle Print- ing and Publishing Company is the weekly rural publi- cation named Farm and Dairy, A regional paper cov- ering Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania, this has gone out every week from our plant since 1914, The name, selected long ago when most rural resi- dents were dairymen, has a trademark value and has not changed. But the content has changed in recognition of the fact that rural residents today represent almost all facets of society. We do have up to date farm news and are first in the farm field with many items. In addition to this, news and features concerning such hobbies as horses, gardening and collecting are offered each week. And there is general information concerning the econo- my and the American scene. No other paper carries so much public auction adver- tising. Most antiques auctions for an area 100 miles across are listed in Farm and Dairy. Farm dispersals, which usually include a mixed lot of machinery, animals and antiques, are always found here. In recent years the auctioning of real estate has increased in this area, and such sales are always listed. Real estate agents fill two or three pages each issue, with listings which will interest folks who like the out- doors. And our pages of classified advertising cover just about everything needed for modern living. LYLE PRINTING AND PUBLISHING COMPANY LETTERPRESS.
