VARSITY “S’ — AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY CLUB FOR 1978 Up until this year, Varsity 11S” was a club comprised predominantly of male athletes who had earned a letter in a Varsity sport. While in the past a few girls were con- sidered members, there wasnft an almost equal membership between sexes like the one which existed in 1978. Although the boys didn't want to accept the idea of these girls joining the club at first, they finally changed their minds for two reasons- (1.) The coaxing from the girls, and (2.) The Supreme Court ruling that clubs such as these HAD to be integrated and not divided into male and female groups. Since the big change in Varsity ”Sn this year, it's been known as an equal opportunity” club. The members of Pep Club plastered the cafeteria with morale boosting posters for the athletes, decorated their lockers, and gave them goodie bags before each game. The Pep Club, whose sponsor this year was Mrs. Julieann Miles, made it possible for the Senior girls to buy corsages for both Homecoming events. They raised money by spon- soring the Sweetheart Dance, ran a concession stand during one of the basketball games, and sold fruitcakes during the Christmas sea- son. Pep Club's efforts were greatly appreciated by not just the high school athletes, but by the entire student body. AV KEPT EQUIPMENT RUNNING SMOOTHLY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR The AV Crew labored hard to provide the school with adequate audio-visual aids. They distribut- ed equipment and assisted faculty in operating projectors, recorders, televisions, and record players. The AV Crew was also responsible for special lighting effects for per- formances in the auditorium. Both the crew and Mr. Bevington, their advisor, did an excellent job of handling the audio-visual depart- ment at SHS. LIBRARY CLUB — MUCH MORE THAN BOOKS IN 1978 Books can be a student's best friend, and the Library Club obvi- ously agreed in 1978, This club, composed of individuals who work- ed as clerks in the library during their free period, not only attended to standard book business, but saw that the library walls were decorat- ed festively at Christmas and on Valentine’s Day, During the month of March, the library club along with advisor, Mrs, Kristy Simcox, traveled to YSU to see how a big library was run smoothly and effi- ciently, thus providing even newer and bigger ideas for SHS’s already great library. (Not Pictured: Phil Dufresne) P.fl.’S AND BI-WEEKLY STAFF AIDED IN COMMUNICATION AT SHS At various times during the year, echoes of Hi there!ri, Have a nice day. , and other memorable openings were heard on the morn- ing announcements. Each announc- er had his own style and attempted to add a little personality to the news of the day. Because of this, announcements not only awoke sleepy students in the morning, but made people really listen to what was being said. Afternoon announcements, handled by Jim Mugsy Miller, ended each day so students would be reminded of any happenings for the next day. Extra, extra, read all about it.11 Those were the words heard every three weeks when The Quaker , SHS’s newspaper came out. The staff, composed of two classes of journalism taught by Mr, Bill Esposito, learned about the different aspects of the news- paper, and put their knowledge to use in putting out The Quaker. For every issue, four new page ed- itors were chosen to give everyone a chance to lay out a page. By the end of the year, some students were sold on journalism and plann- ed to pursue it as a career. With SHS's theater program be- coming more extensive each year, the Thespians have increased in number from a very few to many people who have discovered the world of drama. The Drama Club, under the direction of Mr. Robert Viencek, picked up where the Thespians left off. Although most in this or- ganization were involved in school productions, some just liked the activities provided by the club, such as seasonal parties and travel- ing to other cities to vi ew profes- sional productions. The Drama 1 Club offered much more than just an interest in the theater, it gave everyone a warm welcome and in- vited them to participate in all activities, not just the stage pro- jects at SHS. The famous murder play, laced with love and blackmail, had many strange twists and a surprise ending to add tol its suspense and mystery. The lead roles of Margot and Tony Wendice, the husband and wife, were filled by Erin Waugh and Laine Hall, both familiar faces on the SHS stage, while new perform- ers, Jim Spack (Max Halliday), Bob McClaren (Captain Lesgate), Ricft Tyo (Inspector Francois Hubbard), and Dave Snyder (who played Detec- tive Thompson and made an unfor- gettable curtain call) all |portrayed their characters with a distinct and individual personality. The three- act play was directed by Mr. Robert Viencek; he was assisted by Sharon Weber who was student director. Al- so, Mr. Carl Bevington designed the set as well as handled the lighting and Miss VickLHornung created the costumes. The actors and directors made up only a small part of the theatrical production, however. SPECIAL EFFECTS ADDED GREATLY TO PRODUCTION OF “BEAUTY AND THE BEAST'’ Love triumphs all • . everyone enjoys a story with that type of theme To the de- light of not only the children, but to all who attended the children's play this year, this idea was very prevalent in Beauty and the Beast , the Nicholas S. Gray classic The play, postponed because of the blizzard, was finally presented on January 28 and 29th, 1978. Featured in it were many special effects achieved through the use of strobe lights and a newly purchased smoke machine. This added to the enchantment of the fan- tasy which was presented in three acts. Beauty and her Beast were portrayed by Sue Mathey and Keith Krepps, Other cast members were Scott Shafer (Hodge the Wizard), Scott Miller (Michael), Kevin Fehr (Mr. Clement), but the scene-stealers were Barb Kovach and Michele Mattoon who displayed their talents as Beauty's sis- ters, Jonquiline and Jessamine. (Creatures of the forest were played by members of the Theatre Class at SHS). Mr. Robert Viencek was director for the play while Lorrie Secrest handled the job of student director. Lights, sound, and set were headed by Carl Beving- ton, and Miss Vicki Homung designed the costumes: Others who assisted with the play were: Dave Yakubek, Ed Evans, Paul Hip- pel y, Gary Wukotich (Lights and Sound)- Steve Centofanti, Renae Anderson, Paul Hippely, Michael Fediaczko, Rick Shafer, Lauren Wright, Dave Yakubek (Set)-Trudy Isaacs, Missy Diehl, Lori Robb, Barb Wood- ing (Costumes)-Karen Mi ckunas, Brenda Juillerat, Pam Juillerat, Peggy Julian, Kelly Kantz, Joann Lewis, Julie Vance (Make-Up)- Rod Hannay, Julie Loudon, Jim Spack (Dance Masks)-Lauren Wright, Renae Anderson, Brenda Juillerat, Rene Juillerat, Kelly Kantz, Sue Mathey, Michele Mattoon, Chris Ragan (Props)-Mark Gagnon, Becci Omweg (Poster, Program, and Ticket Design)-Sue Lau, Jeannie Simmons (Program Typists) - Mike Fediaczko, lisa Bolles, Phil Dufresne, Barb Kovach, Kathie Long (Publicity)-Rick Kirby (Photography)-Julie Loudon, Debbie Ward (Tickets)-Barb Wooding, Teri Walsh, Julie Loudon, Debbie Ward (Ushering). ORIGINAL SHS PLAY, “FOR THE LIONS TO WIN” WON OVER CROWD For the Lions to Win , an or- iginal play, written and directed by Mr Robert Viencek, English teacher and Director of Drama at SHS, was presented on March 10, and 11, 1978. The play, which centered on life following World War II in a small river town on the Monongahela, had many sur- prising and tearful moments as the audience followed Frank and Rose Lesako, (portrayed by 1976 SHS graduate, Tod Raymond, and Chris Schaefer) as they, little by little, destroyed every possible hope for happiness in their family of three sons (played by Paul Bloor, Jim Spack, and Paul Hip- pely) Others in the cast were; Becci Omweg (Elaine Watson), Annette Jermolenko (Aunt Sophie Santore), Kevin Fehr (Matt San- tore), Scott Shafer (Rev Mc- Laughlin), Keith Krepps (Capt. Randolph), and Clyde Wolfgang (Steve Kovach). Assisting Mr. Viencek with the production were Boni Miller, Student Director, Miss Vicki Hornung, Costume De- signer, and Mr. Carl Bevington, Set, Light, and Sound Co-ordin- ator. Others who contributed to the efforts of the cast were the chair- men of the following committees! Many others contributed their time and effort for the cause of this first original SHS play Hope- fully, there will be others in the future, and . . . Congratulations, Vinnie, for a great and memor- able play, from a great and mem- orable teacher and director? “OLIVER! MOST SUCCESSFUL PLAY EVER HELD AT SHS The most successful play at Salem High School to date, attendance-wise, proved to be the last 1978 production, Olivera musical based on the novel, OLIVER TWIST, by Charles Dickens. Held on May 11 and 13, 1978, the play was a mixture of music, merriment, and people! Over 100 students participated in the actual pro- duction and many others assisted with backstage preparations. The play, which followed the escapades of little Oliver Twist's (Amy Varkonda) search for love, happiness, and security in London, had many funny and sad moments, but the highlight of the show was the delightful creation of Fagin, leader of the pack of young thieves, by Senior, Julie Loudon in her last and best performance of her high school career. QUALITY AND QUANTITY COMBINED FOR SUCCESS OF SHS MIXED CHORALE Quality and quantity were combined this year in the success of the SHS Choir, now known as Mixed Chorale A mixture of the old and new also added to the ef- forts of the group, as they pre- sented a specta cular show at the annual Christmas concert. Per- forming along side the stage band, they received a standing ovation at the Pop's Concert held this past spring. The choir's last major duty was to provide their voices for many of the parts in the May mu- sical production of ''Oliver The choir was led this year by a new director, Mr. Jeff Jeckavitch, who improved and updated many of the concepts used in the past by SHS Choirs. Even though the band arrived five minutes before they were to perform, they pulled themselves together to give an ex- cellent performance On April 29, 1978, they walked away from State Contest with a meritous, but disappointing good rating. This year the band held pizza, calender, and fruit sales in order to provide funds for the purchasing of additional new band uniforms, which were needed due to the large increase of band members from the Freshmen class. The annual band banquet was held on April 10, 1978, and the band members paid special tribute to senior members-each received a gift and the girls also received roses. The band accomplished much this year and plans to carry on the tradition of having each years' band be not only bigger, but bet- ter. 1978 SALEM HIGH SCHOOL BAND 96-Activities (Band) 1978 SALEM HIGH SCHOOL BAND Band Director: Mr. Jeff Jeckavitch Drum Major: Jack Zocolo Majorettes: Jackie Howery (Head Majorette), Denise Crookston, Dawn Elias, Robyn Finch, Denise Kekel, Mary Beth Lowdermilk, Amy Madison, Terri Saltsman, Jody Southern. Besides learn- ing the fundamentals of drafting so they could go into a specialized field next year, they had a paper drive, sponsored a dance, and sold household prodticts to raise money for their club. This fund was set up to defray costs in at- tending VIC A contests and for do- nating money to various charity organizations. The training for this was on-the- job, as the second half of the year actually included working at a firm in Salem of a surrounding area. To raise money for such things as V1CA contest expenses, activities, and charity donations, the Sr. Drafting Class held a dance and worked in the concession stand at a basketball game. IOE CLASSES — HARD WORK FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE There !s a lot more needed than just typing skills to be a secretary these days! With new office equip- ment and procedures being invent- ed all the time, the basics, such as bookkeeping, shorthand, filing, typing, and using mimeograph machines, are a must. Fourtunate- ly, there are two programs offered here at the high school which en- able students to learn these secre- tarial skills while experiencing the feel of an office in the specially equipped classrooms. After grad- uation, a girl is prepared for a secretarial job without attending college. The programs, Steno I and II and Clerical I and II, were basically the same except where Steno had shorthand, Clerical took filing in its place . While many people seem to believe that much less work was required in these classes, it was explained this year that often there is more work, if not as much, than conventional classes offered. Besides teaching a girl the know-hows of being a secretary, the classes gave the students a chance to compete with other students involved in the same type of education at their schools, and to visit various places of bus- iness on field trips. Because the class was also a club, they planned fund raising projects and field trips for the enjoyment of students when they were away from their type- writers . Activities (IOE Steno and Clerical)-111 salem grid team brings endless surprises in 77 The 1977 Salem football season was somewhat of a surprise to almost everyone . except the team These boys knew they had the ability to play a great game but needed to prove it to the town and the student body The gridders bettered last year's 1-8-1 record to a mark of 5-5, with big victories over Ravenna and East Liver- pool, whom Salem hadn't defeated in the past 15 years. An overall team effort pro- vided each win. There were numerous individuals who furnished their necessary' talents to the game: Jim Ewing and Dean Shafer (known as Mr. Inside and Mr, Outside) were two of the greatest assets to the Quakers this year, thanks to the ability' of the line. They were both leading scorers. Chris Skoglund, Swedish exchange stu- dent, kept the game flying with his tremen- dous ability of kicking, borrowed from his native soccer, (Another kicker also worth noting was Wayne Gorby, who displayed his skills in the first three games of 1977). One of the most outstanding athletes that showed bright commitment to the team was Tony Armeni. He continued to give it all he had, and played his best ever, despite an injured foot which plagued him all season. Besides playing fantastic offensive cen- ter this season, Gregg Crawford was dubbed coach on the field by Coach Bill Davis. It was because of his knowledge of all the plays that his teamates voted him Most Valuable Player for 1977. Frank Bate ha made many' inport ant tackles from his middle guard position this yrear. For the entire season, he was a de- fensive standout who could be depended upon in tight moments. Speed was the key' to Bob Jesko's suc- cess in the 1977 grid season. His job as de- fensive end was done well and earned him a performance record that would make any' player proud. Whitney to Watterson became a com- mon phrase to Quaker fans. These two fine juniors hauled in many key passes. The defense of the team was bolstered by' super play s of Don Kibler and Steve Votaw, who were starters for all ten games. Both are juniors. Don Isaacs, another talented junior, was the vital figure in backfield tackling for the Quakers this past season. Many others, too numerous to mention, added sparks to the games of 1977 and re- ceived awards for their contributions. The greatest reward, however, was having a team which worked together and stayed together, win or lose. A special thanks to Coach Bill Davies and the rest of his fine coaching staff. 1977 Varsity Football Team-(First Row) Bob Foust (mgr.), Frank Batcba, Tony Armeni, Steve Flood, Bob Jesko, Rob Vogt, Ron Moffett, Todd Bowman, Jim Ewing, Mark Saltsman, Rick Mueller. FRESHMAN AND RESERVE TEAMS FARED WELL IN 78 1' t I '7 Wl— ■ nn The Salem High School Fresh- man Football Team turned in a excellent record of 6-1, only los- ing to Poland by 6 points. With the fine coaching of Tom DeBarr and Fred Kunarj the boys were able to play their best season. Two standouts, running back John Sed- don, and quarterback, Rick Zubaty, finished a fantastic season giving 100% all the time, especially when the extra effort was needed. The reserve football team (pic- tured with the Varsity team), under the guidance of coaches, Chuck Long, Bart Dockry, and Jeff Weber, finished the season at 5 wins, and 3 losses. Victories were over Beav- er Local, Li on, Alliance, and East Liverpool Champion, Raven- na, Poland, and St. Thomas Aquinas all defeated the Quakers during the season. During the year there developed some friendly rival- ries among teamates which helped Salem to place high in many meets Seniors Steve Wil- liams and Tim Costa would usually fight it out for the top position, with junior Fred Har- ker and senior Bob Blankenship close behind. There were also many first year runners who did a great job, even though they lacked the experience of the team's veteran runners, includ- ing seniors Kevin Fehr, John Sposetta, and Scott Ramsay. Led by Cathy Yeagley, who remained undefeated during the season and finished fourth in the State AAA Tournament, Coach Kirk Ritchie's team posted an ov- erall 11-3 record and a 9-2 record in the Tri-County Girls1 Tennis League, which placed them second behind Boardman. In addition to Yeagley, another outstanding team member was Sue Conn, a winner of all but two of her singles matches. Cathy, the first tennis player from Salem to go to State, (as well as the first girl athlete of any sport at SHS to participate in a state tournament) played a great game, but was beaten in the semi-finals. In the consola- tion match, she lost a real heartbreaker, thus placing fourth in the State During Cath three years on the Salem Tennis Team, shw has won 27 straight matches, dating back to her freshman year. Congratulations, Cathy, on a job well done and good luck in next year's tennis season. GOLF TEAM UP TO PAR IN 78 TEAM EFFORT Despite a 7-9 season, the Sa- lem Golf Team and their coach, Chet Tetlow, were quite pleased with their performance . The high- light of the f78 season was the fact that all the golf ere, for the first time in a long while, played as a team, instead of having only one or two individuals stand out among the entire group of players. All did a great job this past year, but a special mention goes to Kevin Guchemand, a junior who turned in a super record of fine golfing in 1978. The dynamic squad held summer prac- tices every morning for an average of three hours. When school started , the team practiced upgrading their skills every night when they did not have games; this proved to be quite useful, for they won some grueling matches over such local schools as United, Beaver Local, and Lisbon, Outstanding members of the squad included sophomore, Doreen Jackson, and juniors, Mar- cia Loudon, Judy Stephenson, and Paula Young. The team was spirit- ually led by the only senior, Jean Flory. The Reserve squad finished the season with a 5-7 record. The JV's were boosted by the efforts of Mary Lou Perry and Lisa Hart. (NOT PICTURED: Dave Firth) 78 BASKETBALL SEASON ENDED IN DISAPPOINTING 7-12 This year the Salem Quakers Basketball Squad, under first-year coach Richard Hackett, did some- thing many people thought would not happen—the team had a losing sea- son, The 1977-78 roundballers, con- sisting mostly of seniors, still thrill- ed hometown fans with their never- die attitude. With this type of posi- tive thinking, the Quakers upset some teams that were rated high in the state The biggest victory came when the team beat the Alliance Aviators, who were rated eleventh at the time. After that big win, the Quakers had many of their games cancelled be- cause of the weather and they seem- ed to lose their touch, as they went on to win only two more games out of the seven remaining. The season, on a whole, wasn’t the best in Sa- lem’s history, but it wasn't the worst either. Many of the games were won .by the other teams by less than six points, which speaks for itself. This year's Quakers were lead by three outstanding seniors, Tim Bailey, Bruce Maher, and Bill Shivers, Bailey, the leading scorer of the team, popp- ed in about twenty points a game, Maher, the floor general of the Quak- ers, led in assists, steals, and had a fourteen point average. Shivers, at 6'2fl, led the team in rebounding, with about eleven a game, and he chipped in with about ten points a game. All in all, the Quakers played like winners and had a reputation for playing the great game of basketball. TRIBUTE TO 78 ROUNDBALLERS Although the 1977-78 basketball season was not a winning one, with the overall record being a disappointing, but well-played 7-12, 7 super talented senior boys gave the Red and Black all they had and then some. Salem was very fortu- nate to have these fine roundballers to represent the Quakers on both home and away courts. They truly showed everyone how to play a great game of basketball. The 7 Super Seniors are: Bill Shiv- ers (25), Tim Bailey (32), Bob Jesko (45), Mark Webb (11), Bruce Maher (22), Dave Firth (30), and Paul Rutkousky (54). (Special mention goes to not only Bailey, Jesko, Maher, and Rutkousky for playing Varsity for the third straight year, but to Jim Mugsy Miller, the Quaker manager who stood by and supported these guys from Game One in their Freshmen year to the last days of playing on the Varsity team.) (Coach Tom De Barr not pictured) QUAKER WRESTLING WAS ON UPSWING IN 78 SEASON Salem Varsity Wrestling had a phenomenal season during the 1977-78 mat campaign under first year grappling coach, Fred Kunar (formerly coach at wrestling power- house, Southeast), who was nam- ed Coach of the Year by the coaches of the Eastern Ohio Wrest- ling League . The team racked up an 8-5, the first winning season ever in Quaker wrestling's thirteen years. Among those wins were three great victories over East Liv- erpool, Hubbard, and Alliance. (Following this win, sheer pande- monium broke out in the Salem camp, for by halting Alliance, the Quakers captured their winning year mark). Other victorious matches for Salem included War- ren Harding, Warren Western Re- serve, and Girard, while disap- pointments came from such schools as Ravenna, Boardman, and West Branch. Toumament play began on a hopeful note: at the East Liv- erpool mid-season tournament, six Salem grappleis placed in con- solation-Dave Drakulich, Steve Flood, Greg Fidoe, Jesse Christy, Tom Quinn, and Mark Riffee, while only Frank Batcha made fin- als . Post season tournaments didn't see Salem fare quite as well. Only three Quaker wrestlers advanced from districts to sectionals. They were Dave Drakulich, Frank Bat- cha, and Greg Fidoe. None of those grapplers went beyond districts. The Salem Reserve Wrestling team completed a fine season un- der Coach Tom De Barr, making a mark of 9-3. Assisting the team to this excellent record were five outstanding sophomore grapplers- John Armeni, Demy Ulrich, Dave Flood, Dave Livingston, and Tod Bennett. The underrated Salem Fresh- men Matmen finished a fair sea- son with a final record of 1-3. The powerful team owed two of its losses to the fact that they had to forfeit 18 points in each match because of lack of a full team. The other two remaining matches were dropped by the Quakers by a mere 6 points apiece. Especially promising freshmen included Dave Barrett, Mike Cerneck, Virgil Di Biase, and Dennis Twaddle. John McKee coached the mighty pack. SALUTE TO 78 SALEM GRAPPLERS To be a wrestler takes a special type of guy . . , one who is dedicated enough to endure five months of grueling practice, sacrifice to make weight, and stick through the most trying six minutes that ever ticked off the clock. A wrestler also has to have enough esteem to be able to do his job without much recognition, and, as one Salem grappler put it: A wrestler has to be in a different world from every- body else.TT This past year, Salem had 11 Senior matmen who did a great job of assisting their team with a winning season. GIRLS GAVE BASKETBALL A NAME IN SALEM IN '78 The Salem Girls’ Varsity Basketball team rolled up an impressive 14-3 won-lost slate in the 1977-78 season, (the best record ever recorded for a Salem Girls1 Basketball team) The Quakers’ first game was a disappoint- ment as they dropped a close encounter, 59-46, to Warren Harding, but the loss only provoked a tvinning streak of eleven victory skirmishes for the girls. Some of the big wins included defeat- ing Niles, Beaver Local, West Branch, and East Liverpool. Another thrill was returning to a second game with War- ren Harding, and hitting them with a loss. At the end of the season, Warren Western Reserve captured a heartbreak- er over the Quakers in a 52-51 tilt. Following this, AAA Tournament play also proved disappointing, for Board- man dealt the Quakers a 58-50 loss in the first game. The Varsity team was fortunate in '78 for having many out- standing players, among them, Debbie Whitney (MVP of the A11-Area Cage team), Cathy Yeagley, Jill Zocolo, Diane Ward, and Tammy Bailey. Un- der the direction of Coach Jean Espo- sito, who was named All-Area Coach of the Year, the Girls1 Varsity Basket- ball team turned in a fine season of which they can be very proud. The Salem Girls' Reserve Basketball Team also had an impressive record: 15-2, The team’s trademarks were a stingy defense and very strong press. They made many of the victories pos- sible, especially in a memorable West Branch clash. Reserve standouts of first year Coach Craig Readshaw, were Anne Jones, Unda Faieta, and Lois Miller, to name a few. VARSITY COACH: Mrs. Jean STATISTICIAN: Laurie Stoffer. Lots of spirit and pep was added to sporting events of SHS this past year, thanks to the efforts of its cheerleaders Many people never knew the time and hard work involved in being a cheerlead- er. Long hours after school were spent per- fecting cheers and assisting Pep Club with its morale boosting projects for the athletes such as making scrapbooks, goodie bags, and decorations for lockers. Sure, there was a certain stigma of being an SHS cheerleader ... but it was not all fun and glory, as in any activity which gets its participants really engaged with stu- dents and faculty alike . . . just ask any cheerleader! VARSITY BASEBALL COACH: Bill Davies VARSITY AND RESERVE BASEBALL HAD DISAPPOINTING RECORDS IN 78 The 1978 Salem Varsity Baseball Team, coached by Bill Davies, ended its season with a somewhat disappointing 8-15 record The Quakers looked bril- liant at times, but could not put every- thing together after a two week lay-off due to rain. A fewr highlights of the sea- son were the come from behind win” of Warren JFK, three Quaker homeruns during a 10-0 victory over Wellsville, and defeating West Branch 4-1 after five scoreless innings. Among the out- standing players were: Todd Bowman, Walt Dr. Shields, Kevin Smutko, and Bruce Maher. The Reserve Baseball Team, (Not Pictured) under the coaching of Jerry Allen, also had a disappointing season, ending with a 5-10 record. Tri-captains Bob Allison, Tim Costa, and Bill Shivers gave their leadership and time to to try to make the team the best ever The '78 team did not have very many exceptional athletes so they had to pull togeth- er as a team to do the best they could. For the third year in a row Salem has sent a team member to State . This year Bob Allison, the highly talented senior pole vaulter, made the trip. Bob finished sixth place in State, something of which he could he very proud, The Salem Track Team of r78 showed a special dedication and worked extremely hard this year to win the meets in which they participated, The Girls' Track Team con- cluded another very successful season with a 7-0 record. The Quakerettes won all meets decisive- ly except for the one with Can- field , which Salem took by a close 59-51 score. The gals of Coach Frank Ho opes rolled over the rest of their opponents by defeating such schools as Warren JFK, Lib- erty, Woodrow Wilson, Girard, and Beaver Local and Warren Harding in a triangular meet. The odds . . . they were against us from the very beginning and became increasingly more difficult each step of the way. Dreams ... we had our dreams and worked hard to realize them, harder than any individual, except a dedicated member of the staff, could possibly comprehend . Still, upon many occasions, we were dealt defeat, not because we didn’t try, but because too great a barrier existed ... a barrier too great to be torn down. Regardless of that, here is the re- sult of our year's work. To most read- ers it spells little more than any year- book ever has ... or will. But pressed between the pages are laughter and tears, victories and defeats, and friend- ship . Many staffs never get to know one another beyond the moments of despera- tion and anger . . . ours did. And that, in itself, was an accomplishment. All we're really trying to say is that we tried our best, and we have realized the ideal yearbook isn't truly possible. So we look back at the past year, now gone forever, and sigh with wistful relief. Goodbye to rushed deadlines, crumpled layout sheets, warped croppers, and all the headaches which accompany a yearbook job. We leave them to the staffs of the future and wish them luck and lots of perseverance . . . but more than anything we wish for them the friend- ship we found here which helped us to form our own Photographs and Mem- ories .
